A striking feature of the Mediterranean flora concerns the high rates of narrow endemism within many regions. The prevailing paradigm for the evolution of such endemism relies on an important role of geographic isola- tion and allopatric speciation. Until recently there has been little work on the precise ecological differences among endemic plants and their congeners in the Mediterranean region and the potential role of ecological spe- cialisation in isolation and speciation. This paper has two objectives. First, we evaluate general ecological dif- ferences among endemic and widespread congeners in the flora of the western Mediterranean. The results and review of the literature attest to consistent patterns of ecological differentiation among endemic species and their more widespread congeners. Second, we present results of a detailed study of morphological, molecular and ecological differentiation in a group of spring-flowering Mediterranean Cyclamen species. -

Day 1 Tuesday 26th March We left Gatwick on a mid-morning flight to Athens, where we changed planes, and arrived in Heraklion at 7.30pm. We soon learned that Crete had experienced its wettest winter for over 100 years and that February storms had caused severe damage and disruption to the road system. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge, our usual route, was impassable, so we had to deviate through the neighbouring Kotsifou Gorge and then down a minor road to Plakias, The journey, mostly in the dark, passed without incident, except for a fleeting glimpse of a Barn Owl and we arrived at our hotel around 10pm for some much-needed sleep. Day 2 Wednesday 27th March The day got off to a sunny start. We left Plakias around 9am, observing four Little Egrets and a couple of little Ringed Plover on the shoreline. We made our first stop at the Turkish Bridge, where there was much evidence of the winter floods. The Mediterranean Storax Styrax officinalis, which would normally be flowering at this time of year, was still in tight bud; a good indication that spring was arriving late. Across the road, in the olive groves, there were plenty of yellow flowers starting to appear on the Bermuda Buttercup Oxalis pes-caprae, alongside Purple Viper’s Bugloss Echium plantagineum, which was attracting attention from a handsome Scarce Swallowtail butterfly. -

I. INTRODUCTION This investigation of the cytology of the genus Cyclamen was started to find out the possibility of crossing different species,i n order to use thesefo r breeding purposes. This made it necessary to determine at first the chromosome numbers of the different species and varieties, see KAPPERT (9). It was self-evident that simultaneous with this investigation the systematic relationships of the different species were studied (DOORENBOS). Taxonomists chiefly use easily distinguishable macroscopical characters for the classification of species and genera. After the discovery, however, that chromosomes are bearers of genetical characteristics, these also have been used in the study of relationships. Especially after it became clear that in many cases differences in species can be traced back to differences in chromosome arrange ment, and none the less after new species were bred by intential species cros sings, more and more attention was paid to chromosome number and chromo some morphology as an aid to classification. In the different Cyclamen species many different chromosome numbers are found. -

Bitki örneklerinde sürgün uzunluğu, boğum ve dal sayısı, yaprak uzunluğu-genişliği, yaşayan yapraklar, ölü yapraklar, çiçeklerin sayısı, kök sürgün oranı, spesifik yaprak alanı (SLA) ile yaprak ağırlık/ yaprak alanı (LMA) değerleri ayrı ayrı hesaplanmıştır. Anatomik incelemelerde her yükseltiye ait örneklerin yaprak kesitlerinde epidermis ve stoma hücrelerinin en ve boyları ile mezofil tabakasının kalınlığı, stoma sayısı ve stoma indeksi belirlenmiştir. The present contribution deals with karyotypic differen- tiation of the six morphologically or chromosomally distinguishable taxonomic units in Cyclamen subgen. Psilanthum, namely C. balearicum ( 2n=20, 2n=20+B) , two sports of C. repandum (2n=20), C. rhodium (2n=20), and two chromosomal races of C. creticum (2n=20,2n=22). In contra- distinction to a hypothesis forwarded by LEPPER (1964, 1975), karyotypes with 2n=22 in C. creticum and 2n=20 in the other species show a Robertsonian relationship. I.e., two telocentric chromosome pairs in C. creticum (2n=22) are replaced by one metacentric pair in the other species. In C. creticum with 2n=20, the analyzed karyotype is neither directly comparable with the other 2n=20 karyotypes, nor does it show a simple relationship to the 2n=22 karyotype in C. creticum. On the other hand,the arm ratios of several chromosomes, especially NOR-chromosomes, discriminate C. creticum from all other taxa in Cyclamen subgen. Psilanthum. Stopped at Armeni Minoan cemetry with rich flora and then at Kourtaliotiko gorge. 2 15th April To Kakomouri, the Plakias headland 3 16th April Spili bumps 4 17th April Walk to Mirthios and back 5 18th April Agios Ioannis, Kotsifos gorge and Mirthios 6 19th April Walked to Souda 7 20th April Amari valley, first stop Meronas, then church of Agia Paraskevi, then village of Thronos and chruch of Panagia, returning to Meronas for lunch. 8 21st April Departure Tuesday 14 April Our early departure from London was at once worthwhile when we were greeted by warm and sunny weather upon our arrival. Yiannis met us at Chania airport, where be boarded our bus to Plakias. Our first stop was at the Armeni Minoan cemetery, which was to be our first introduction to the wonderful flora of Crete. We saw masses of tongue serapias Serapias lingua and naked man orchid Orchis italica along with many other orchids and plants. We then moved on to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, carving its way southwards. As we descended in to the gorge, alpine swifts Tachymarptis melba and crag martins Ptyonoprogne rupestris wheeled high overhead, and several griffon vultures Gyps fulvus drifted over. Tucked within a crevice we located several plants of the endemic Cretan sowbread Cyclamen creticum. Wednesday 15 April We spent our first day exploring the Kakomouri headland, to the south of Plakias. We explored the beach as we headed towards the headland, looking at the sand dune plants. -

Debussche & L. Affre: Ecological and evolutionary aspects ofpopulation differentiation in three related Cyclamen species in the western Mediterranean. - Bocconea 13: 165-172. 2001 - ISSN 1120-4060. The Mediterranean flora contains many examples of disjunct species distributions. In the genus Cyclamen (Primulaceae) three species show disjunct distribution patterns in the western Mediterranean basin that suggest the importance of physical isolation events for speciation in the genus. C. balearicum occurs in five fragmented sites in southern France and on four of the Balearic Islands, C. creticum is endemie to Crete and Karpathos and C. repandum is more widely distributed from southern France to southern Greece including ali the main Mediterranean Islands. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how studies of the ecology and genetics of spatial popu lation structure within and between species can provide important information on the role of physical isolation events for speciation. Continental populations of C. balearicum show extremely high levels of genetic differentiation which greatly exceed those among true island populations. Human fragmentation amI/or glaciation may have drastically reduced population sizes on the con tinent causing such higher levels of differentiation. Il is also possible that because Balearic island populations have a wider ecological amplitude than continental populations they show less diffe rentiation. C. repandum also shows significant levels of population differentiation. The genetic distances among the three species indicate that this species, or an ancestral form, has given rise to C. -
Variation in the Population Genetic Structure of Two Cyclamen Species on the Island of Corsica

THOM PSON* C.E.F.E.-C.N.R.S., Route de Mende, BP 5051, F-34033 Montpef/ier Cédex 1, France Cyclamen repandum and C. hedenfolium occur in sympatry in many sites across their distribu- tions but flower at different times. A previous controlled pollination experiment on plants of the two species collected on the island of Corsica showed no evidence of inbreeding depression over all measured life cycle stages in C. repandum, whereas C. hederifolium showed inbreeding depression (multiplicative (50.49) on fruit maturation and seed production. This suggests that C. repandum may have a greater history of inbreeding than C. hederifolium. In this paper, we examine whether within-population heterozygosity and among-population differentiation on Corsica are consistent with the hypothesis that C. repandum is more inbred than C. heder- ifolium. Cyclamen hederifolium showed a higher percentage of polymorphic loci, meannumber of alleles per locus and mean observed heterozygosity than C. repandum. Cyclamen repandum showed higher among population differentiation (FST =0.415)than C. hederifolium (FST =0.131).The within-population fixation index was greater in C. repandum (F1 =0.658) than in C. hederifolium (F1 =0.329).Cyclamen repandum thus appears to have a greater history of inbreeding than C. hederifolium. The pantropical family Dilleniaceae includes ca. 400 species distributed in four subfamilies and 11 genera is among the flowering plants with flowers combining primitive and ancestral structures and poricidal anthers. The aim of this study was to illustrate the general structure of flowers and anthers in Dillenia indica. Flower parts are spirally organized including the apocarpous gynoecium composed of 16 to 22 carpels. The androecium has numerous free heterodynamous stamens, spirally organized in several concentric series that can be distinguished in peripherical and central series; the long anthers are poricidal. The ovary is epigynous and polycarpous with many ovules per carpel, axile placentation and anatropous ovules. The sepals persist during development and wrap an indehiscent fruit. All floral whorls are spirally arranged in a Magnoliid-fashion and showed some distinctive characters, such as perianth with persistent sepals that remain attached to the mature fruit; the androecium has at least two types of laminar poricidal stamens which shape is based on the locations (central versus peripherical), and the gynoecium is apocarpous.
