Disease Prevention Web Quest by Brooke White, CUW Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation

Introduction The purpose of this web quest is to increase awareness of the symptoms of sexually transmitted infections and to understand the serious consequences of some STDs/STIs as well as how they can be prevented and treated. An emphasis will be placed on the need for a healthy body in order to live productive lives.

The Task You are working as an advertising executive at a non-profit, free clinic which is trying to put together a public service announcement for teens regarding sexually transmitted diseases and/or HIV. Your first assignment as intern is to accumulate information regarding the following diseases and create fact sheets with the following information: What it is and how people catch the disease

1. How do you know you have it? (symptoms) 2. What can happen if it is left untreated? 3. How do you treat it and/or cure it? 4. How many people contract the disease on a yearly basis?

You will have to be thorough since you are trying to make a good impression on the clinic's directors and on any teens that may hear your message. You should gain some knowledge about each of the following diseases:

1) Chlamydia 2) Genital Herpes 3) Genital Warts (HPV) 4) Gonorrhea 5) HIV and AIDS 6) Pelvic Inflammatory Disease 7) Pubic Lice (Crabs) 8) Syphilis

The Process: Use the following memo styles to complete assignment Memo #1 – 20 pts To: Advertising Executives at BHS Re: Public Service Announcement Project

We have recently decided to design public service announcements to be aired during prime time programs that may have sexual situations or adult themes to help give our teen viewers information regarding some of the situations they may see during these programs. We are aware that STDs are becoming more common and can lead to serious health problems if they are not treated. Recent statistics have shown that by the age of 21, almost one in five Americans require treatment for an STD. We hope to make these PSAs informative and pertinent to our teen viewers.

Your first job is to determine which programs we should feature our public service announcements. Make a list of top ten shows for your age demographic (14-21 years old). These shows could possibly deal with adult themes and sexual situations. Once you have compiled a list of ten, you will choose three from the list you have assembled. Please provide rationale of why your group chose these programs. You may use these resources to get your list of television shows: http://www.cbs.com/ http://www.fox.com/ http://www.nbc.com/ http://www.abc.com/ http://www.tv.zap2it.com/ http://www.tv.com/

Other complications that can develop from having this disease. What happens if it is left untreated? This should include information about: How do you treat it?

What are the consequences if you do not treat the getting this disease? disease? (other health implications) Also, please make us a resource page so we know where you obtained the information and we may give credit to avoid any copyright infringements and plagiarism. Contact the intern advisor for any further information. Due to the amount of research that is required, you will be assigned to work in groups.
