THE FREDERICK OEHM, SR. EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION FUND AWARD APPLICATION
Eligibility for this award is based on the completion and submission of the application, the completion of an essay, project, or experiment on the topic designated by and according to the instructions of the Mt. Vernon Twp. High School Board of Education; and the submission of a high school transcript containing the first 3 years of high school. The individual must be a graduating student who will enroll in a college, university, or specialized institution of training no later than the fall semester after high school graduation. The employees and children of employees of U.S. Bank and any of its subsidiaries are not eligible for this scholarship award. The children of the members of the Board of Education and the administration of Mt. Vernon Twp. High School are not eligible for this award. All items listed above must be submitted to the Principal's Office (Main Office) of the Mt. Vernon Twp. High School on or before March 1, 2013. The topic for the school year 2012-13 is: Compose an essay on the following topic: Art, music and fine arts influence our society and culture significantly. What roles have music, art and/or fine arts played in your life, and how does each continue to influence and remain important to American education? The student is to develop an appropriate essay, project, or experiment to be submitted on or before March 1, 2013. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE ESSAY
1. Applicant must write their essay on the topic approved by the Board of Education.
2. Applicants must submit a neatly typed copy of their original essay. The essay is to be double-spaced.
3. The essay is to have a cover page with the name of the individual and his school typed in the center of the page.
4. The length of the essay should be between 800 and 1200 words with a minimum of five sources. The sources are to be cited in the essay in MLA format. Check a writing handbook or with an English teacher for the format. All sources are to be listed on a separate page entitled "Works Cited." Alphabetical listing is to be used in the works cited.
5. Applicants must verify that the research and writing of the essay are completely their own work by signing the attached form and submitting it at the same time they submit their essay.
6. The criteria for judging essays are as follows:
A. Integration - Evaluation of the essay based on a focused global judgment of how effectively the composition as a whole addresses the essay topic.
B. Focus - Evaluation of the essay based on the clarity with which the essay presents a clear main idea, point of view, theme, or unifying event.
C. Support and Elaboration - Evaluation of the essay based on the degree to which the main point or event is elaborated and explained by specific detail and reasons.
D. Organization - Evaluation of the essay based on the clarity of the logical flow of ideas and the explicitness of the test.
E. Conventions - Evaluation of the essay based on the use of standard written English.
F. Following Directions - Evaluation of the essay based on the degree to which all required elements in the Essay Instructions are addressed. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE PROJECT
1. Applicants must develop their project on the topic listed on the attached sheet.
2. The project cannot be a "kit" or a part of an unfinished manufactured project. Manufactured stock materials can be used.
3. The project must be accompanied by a double-spaced typewritten "Reference Manual" that contains the following items:
A. Written summary of the purpose of the project. B. "Bill of Materials" used in constructions (supplies and material). C. List of equipment used in construction. D. "Plan of procedure" used in construction of project. E. "Bibliography," a list of resources used in designing and constructing the project.
4. The "Reference Manual" is to have a cover page with the name of the individual and his school typed in the center of the page. The document will be retained by the school. The project will be returned to the applicant.
5. Applicants must verify that the research, construction, and writing of the Reference Manual for the project were completely their own work by signing the attached form and submitting it at the same time they submit their project.
6. Criteria for judging of the project and Reference Manual:
A. The project has been delimited appropriately for the topic. B. Organization of the Reference Manual shows logical order. C. Spelling and usage are standard written English. D. Unity and coherence of project summary are clear. E. Project and Reference Manual illustrate neatness. F. Complete sentences are used in Summary and Plan of Procedure. G. Alphabetical listing is used in Bibliography. H. Development of project shows good construction techniques are used. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE EXPERIMENT
1. Applicants must develop their experiment on the topic listed on the attached sheet.
2. Experiments on animals are prohibited.
3. The experiment must be accompanied by a double-spaced, typewritten paper which contains the following items:
A. Purpose B. Equipment used C. Experimental Procedure D. Data E. Interpretation of data F. Bibliography of reference materials consulted
4. The "Paper" must have a cover page with the name of the individual and his/her school typed in the center of the page.
5. Applicants must verify that the experiment and paper were completely their own work by signing the attached form and submitting it at the same time they submit their experiment.
6. Criteria for judging experiment:
A. Scientific approach to the problem using relevant experimentation
1) approach indicates creativity 2) conclusions logically deduced from experimental data 3) clean, concise paper accompanies experiment 4) alphabetical listing is used in Bibliography 5) soundness of experimental technique
B. Spelling and usage are standard written English.
1) Appropriateness of word choice is used. 2) Unity and coherence of experiment summary are clear. 3) Experiment and paper illustrate neatness.
