1 BIL: 1441 2 TYP: Concurrent Resolution CR 3 INB: Senate 4 IND: 20000622 5 PSP: Rankin 6 SPO: Rankin 7 DDN: l:\council\bills\nbd\12222ac00.doc 8 DPB: 20000622 9 SUB: Chief James Terrell Smith, Jr., Resolutions 10 11 12 13 HST: 14 15 Body Date Action Description Com Leg Involved 16 ______17 Senate 20000622 Received from House 18 House 20000622 Introduced, adopted, returned 19 with concurrence 20 Senate 20000622 Introduced, adopted, sent to House 21 22 23 24 Versions of This Bill 25 26 27 28 29 TXT: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE 12 MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL 13 ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF FIRE CHIEF JAMES 14 TERRELL SMITH, JR., OF HORRY AND GEORGETOWN 15 COUNTIES AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO 16 HIS WIFE, OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, AND MANY 17 FRIENDS. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 20 where saddened to learn of the death of Chief James Terrell Smith, 21 Jr., of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department who died 22 June 18, 2000; and 23 24 Whereas, Chief Smith, born in Clayton County, Georgia, was the 25 son of Martha Coney Smith and the late James Terrell Smith, Sr.; 26 and 27 28 Whereas, he was the Fire Chief of the Center Fire Department and 29 served as the Fire Chief of the Cayce Fire Department for eight 30 years; and 31 32 Whereas, Chief Smith was the current fire Chief of the Murrells 33 Inlet-Garden City Fire Department; and 34 35 Whereas, he was a member of the South Carolina State Firemen’s 36 Association and the South Carolina State Association of Fire 37 Chiefs for over twenty years; and 38 39 Whereas, Chief Smith was known as the “Unofficial Mayor of the 40 South Strand” and mentored many people who sought a career in 41 the fire service; and 42

1 [1441] 1 1 Whereas, he was married to Ora Sue Smith, and together they 2 reared two sons, James Terrell Smith, III and George W. Smith; 3 and 4 5 Whereas, Chief Smith was respected, admired, and loved in Horry 6 and Georgetown Counties and throughout South Carolina, and he 7 will be greatly missed; and 8 9 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 10 want Chief Smith’s widow, his other family members, and his 11 many friends to know that they are uppermost in their thoughts and 12 have the members deepest sympathy. Now, therefore, 13 14 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 15 concurring: 16 17 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 18 resolution, express profound sorrow upon the death of Fire Chief 19 James Terrell Smith, Jr., of Horry and Georgetown Counties and 20 extend deepest sympathy to his wife, other family members, and 21 many friends. 22 23 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 24 the family of Chief James Terrell Smith, Jr. 25 ----XX----
