Course Description/Objectives: Taught entirely in Spanish; the purpose of this course is to study the travel and tourism industry in Spain and Latin America through the use of thematic vocabulary and situational dialogues. Assessment/Grading System: Attendance: 5% Participation: 5% Assignments: 10% Individual Presentation: 5% Group Presentation: 10% Quizzes: 15% Exams (2): 30% Final Exam: 20% Grading Scale: A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=59 or below Assessment/Grading System:

Attendance 5%: Attendance is of the utmost importance. Students will be allowed two unexcused absences. Each student will begin with a grade for attendance of 50 points, after three unexcused absences, the grade will go down to 25; after four unexcused absences the grade for attendance will be a 0. Two Tardies (a tardy is defined as arriving more than 15 minutes late to class) = One Absence. No make-up work will be given without a valid/documented excuse. Personal reasons for missing class are not considered valid excuses. Leaving early counts as an absence as well. An excused absence is given only with a documented medical emergency, university-sponsored activities and/or the observance of certain religious holidays. Said proof must be provided within two class meeting days after the student’s return . If you leave before class is dismissed you will be counted absent.

Participation 5%: Each student will be expected to participate actively in the target language in class discussions and when asking/answering questions and speaking with classmates. Not participating/not using Spanish while in class will result in the loss of 2 points per day (up to 6 points per week) from your total participation grade.

Assignments 10%: It is expected that all students will come to class prepared for daily discussion of the topics posted on Blackboard and with the daily assignments completed (assignments will be randomly checked). All assignments including vocabulary definitions must be typed and printed out (before class) in case they need to be turned in to the instructor. Homework is due at the moment the instructor requests it; you may not turn assignments in at a later time/date. The lowest homework grade will be dropped.

Individual Presentation 5%: Each student will research and present a report on an aspect of the travel industry (ie; baggage fees, flight attendant’s unions, travel safety, airfare price increases…). Within one week of drawing for dates for the individual presentations, students must decide and tell Profesora Church what topic they will be presenting on in order to avoid duplication of the topic. The presentation should be memorized, last between 3-5 minutes and include a Power Point presentation and supporting data. The day of the presentation, you must turn in a 2 page report/paper typed, double-spaced, font size 12 that expands on the information given in the presentation. If you do not turn in this report the day your presentation is made, there will be a deduction of 25 points per day from your presentation grade. How the presentation will be graded is explained in more detail in the guideline/grading rubric posted on Blackboard.

Group Presentations 10%: Each group will create their own travel agency (agency name, company logo, advertising, trip descriptions, package prices, etc…) that will market tour packages for a specific interest group. One week after dividing into groups, each group must decide on and tell Profesora Church what type of travel agency they will be presenting in order to avoid duplication of the topic. The group will turn in a copy of their project/materials the day of their presentation. The presentation will last 15-20 minutes and include: a Power Point Presentation and a promotional brochure/flyer (that provides details about their travel agency and their tours) – copies of these two items must be turned in to the instructor the day of the presentation. If you do not turn these items in the day the presentation is made, there will be a deduction of 25 points per day from each person in the group’s presentation grade. Each page of the Power Point presentation must be labeled with the name of the student who prepared it. Each Friday (time permitting), beginning on Friday, September 30th, the groups will be given time at the end of class to work on their presentations together. How the presentation will be graded is explained in more detail in the guideline/grading rubric posted on Blackboard.

Quizzes 15%: There will be a quiz each week. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. No makeups will be allowed after quizzes have been returned (the next class day after they have been administered). Please do not use red/pink ink or pencil on your quizzes. Spelling counts!

Exams (2) 30%: There will be two exams. Please do not use red/pink ink or pencil. There will be no make-ups without the proper documentation.

Final Exam 20%: The final exam will be comprehensive with a focus on the final chapters covered: 9, 10 & 11 and must be taken on the day and time specified on the final exam schedule. The Final Exam will be on Wednesday, December 14 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in LANG 314. Please note that the University specifically prohibits any deviation from the announced Final Exam Schedule.
