Grace Brethren High School  1350 Cherry Avenue  Simi Valley, CA 93065  805.522.4667  805.522.5617 F Coach’s Job Description

1. The first and foremost responsibility of our coaching staff is to teach our athletes to love God and people. We want our athletes to understand the Bible teaches belief in Jesus is the only way to have eternal life and that being a good person is not enough. Coaching is not simply about sports, it is about teaching young men and women life skills that will enable them to serve their God, family, church and community more effectively because they have been a part of GBHS. Athletes who are a part of GBHS sports should be more Christ-like, obedient to God, and loving to others as a result of their participation in the program. The end goal for any of our athletes who are not Christians is to receive eternal life through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Have devotionals from the Bible and prayer times are important parts of the coach’s responsibility. 2. Coaches are expected to challenge the athletes to get the best education and grades possible at GBHS. Athletes come to school first as students, and then as athletes. If we fail to continually reinforce the need for excellence in academics, we have failed the student and his or her family. 3. Our won-loss record is not what makes GBHS athletics a success or a failure. However, this is an important part of what we do as coaches. We never want to be accustomed to losing. The athletes, parents, and administration expect that you will provide the physical, technical, and tactical training which will give our athletes the best opportunity to win. This means practices are run with a goal in mind, athletes are evaluated on their current abilities and potential, as well as all the other things that go into coaching. 4. Coaches are responsible for helping students reach their maximum potential as athletes. One of the goals of Grace Brethren Athletics is to prepare students for the college athletic experience. WE know that not all students are able to play at the next level, but those who have that potential should be assisted in developing their abilities so that they might now only play at the next level, but also receive scholarship. 5. Each coach is expected to attend booster club meetings in order to give representation of their sport. The coaches input as far as what is happening on the team, what needs they may have, and what the booster club can do to support them is vital. A parent representative will need to attend each booster club meeting with the head coach to give valuable input as well. Each coach is also responsible for appointing a team coordinator to assist in the administration of their sport and contact with parents. 6. Coaches should also be looking to the future of the program. What equipment is needed in the future? What teams would you like to play? What will the team look like next year? What can individual players do to improve in the off season? Answering questions like these are important to the continued growth of GBHS athletics. 7. Coaches are responsible for the supervision of their teams at all times. From the moment the students are to be at practice or at games, to the time they are picked-up by parents, the athletes must have adult supervision. If you cannot be there, then an adult must be there in your stead. This applies to practices and games. 8. Coaches need to be able to help with the basic administration of their sport [i.e. in relation to the coaching responsibilities worksheet]. 9. Coaches are responsible for the issue and return of all athletic department equipment and uniforms. You are to assume responsibility for the daily care and safe storage of all equipment. Coaches are also responsible for the maintenance and improvement of all facilities/fields that they are using.
