Job Description and Role Profile for the Manager for the New Hanbury Project
Title Manager Location New Hanbury Project, 3 Calvert Avenue, E2 7JP Hours *Mon to Fri, 9am to 5pm (37.5hrs/week), *(we are willing to consider part-time applicants, but the minimum requirement is to work a 4-day week, Mon to Thur) Salary £30k - £32k (pro-rata) Report To Director of the Spitalfields Crypt Trust Responsible For Delivering the Project’s programme, including managing all staff, volunteers and students
1. Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT)
The Trust is a Christian organisation, which aims to enable and support disadvantaged and marginalised people to become more fully integrated within their local community and to experience a greater sense of self-esteem, purpose and value. As such, we seek to meet the needs of the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, in an integrated way, and to this end we are committed to a way of working, expressed in our Ethos Statement, in which our staff team demonstrate the Christian faith and life in action.
The Trust comprises four front-line service-provision units: Acorn House, a residential rehabilitation project for homeless men with alcohol problems; Supported Housing, second/third stage rehabilitation homes (Downham Lodge and Bridge House); The New Hanbury Project, offering life-skills and other training to disadvantaged men and women; and The Shoreditch Community Project, primarily a drop-in centre for homeless and other people.
The New Hanbury Project (NHP) is a training and education centre, which provides hands-on, practical training to people recovering from homelessness, addiction, life-controlling problems, learning difficulties and long-term unemployment. The aims of NHP are to help people to build up their self- confidence, learn useful and practical life skills, become involved in voluntary Page 2 of 4 2009-09-03 work, go on training courses and gain employment opportunities. The Project achieves these aims by providing specialised Training, Personal Growth/Development opportunities and After-Care Recovery Support form life- controlling issues. At present, the NHP is open from Monday to Thursday only, Friday being dedicated to planning and reviewing etc.
Applicants for this post are required to have a Christian commitment and to uphold our Christian Ethos. This requirement is a genuine occupational requirement in terms of the Employment Equality (religion or Belief) Regulations 2003.
2. Role
The main role of the manager is to run an abstinence-based centre for personal development and training, primarily working with adults in recovery from drug addiction and alcohol dependency. In essence, when a student is referred, the manager will undertake an assessment and then tailor and deliver an appropriate training program that will allow students to build up self-confidence and to learn useful and practical life skills. Additionally, we believe the program will enable students to develop a sense of purpose and belonging, bringing meaningful structure to their days and helping them move onto voluntary or paid employment. At times, the manager may lead training sessions. The manager will also lead, co-ordinate and supervise a small, highly skilled team of supporting staff and volunteers.
3. Skills Required
This position requires skills in the following areas:
Superior knowledge and experience in the field of drugs addiction, alcohol dependence and mental health problems. Sound management experience in recovery & rehabilitation programs which includes: strategic planning / team management / finance budgeting / problem solving / delegation. Good IT skills in Microsoft Office Suite: Word / Excel / Outlook. Good interpersonal and communication skills with staff members, colleagues, external bodies, especially students who are in our care and have suffered from problems in homelessness, addiction, mental health, learning difficulties, and long-term unemployment. An inspirational leader with the ability to communicate a clear vision and to enthuse and engender a desire for learning in students. Must have commitment, energy and belief in attaining the Trust’s and, more importantly, the students’ goals.

New Hanbury Project To run a structured program for adults recovering from life challenging circumstances. To coordinate a rolling program of therapeutic intervention and practical sessions including woodwork, art, cooking, personal development etc. To coordinate and carry out assessment of new students and the referral and acceptance process To manage the upkeep and maintenance of the New Hanbury Building whilst the project is running To accept and make referrals from and to other appropriate projects. To manage the given budget of the project and provide information and reports to the board of trustees and fundraising team when appropriate.
Students To coordinate and carry out assessment of new students and the referral and acceptance process. To ensure that each student has a program appropriate to his/her particular needs. And to follow these up with a review (one to one) every 12 weeks To develop and maintain a portfolio of training and work experience or voluntary work possibilities for students. To ensure that plans for students to move on to further training etc. are appropriate and that all necessary support is given. To carry out consultations with the students in the form of ‘Student Meetings’ once a month.
Staff To organise the recruitment, training, deployment, management and appraisal of all staff engaged primarily in the running of the project, in accordance with the relevant policies of the Trust. To ensure that staff have clear targets and appropriate supervision. To review individual workloads and re-assign tasks when necessary. To ensure that health and safety standards are fully maintained. To lead team days, meetings and to ensure that they are properly consulted, as appropriate, and fully briefed at all times.
Ethos To ensure that the Christian ethos and values of the Trust are maintained and observed in the project at all times, particularly, the provision of opportunities for staff to pray together. To ensure compliance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy. Page 4 of 4 2009-09-03
To ensure compliance with all statutory and legal obligations, such as data protection law. To maintain good professional practice amongst the staff, such as the maintenance of appropriate boundaries. To encourage teamwork amongst the staff with, as far as possible, a common mind, and in any event, a common approach on all matters related to the welfare and/or discipline of students. To act in accordance with the ethos and policies of the Trust in dealing with any disciplinary issues.
Environment To ensure a safe and secure environment for students, free, in particular, from alcohol and drugs, and from abusive behaviour and exploitation. To oversee the life of the project, establishing a full range of systems, policies and project rules, to include, amongst others, the daily timetable and fire drills. To ensure that all equipment in the project, and all other facilities for students are kept in a good state of repair and working order.
Finance and Budgeting To operate within agreed budgets, and to comply with the Trust’s financial control procedures.
External To publicise the work of the New Hanbury Project, with the support of Deputy Manager, to prospective referring agencies and to maintain good ongoing relationships with them. To comply with the reporting requirements of funding agencies.
Subordinate To comply with the Director’s reporting requirements. To undertake other tasks as delegated from time to time by the director, in the best interests of the overall work of the Trust.
