He spent most of his young life at Epworth Children’s 25 Home after the death of his mother, where he excelled as an athlete 26 and received a full scholarship to the University of South Carolina. 27 He also received a scholarship for his sister, who followed him 28 there the next year. There he played football and was cocaptain of 29 the 19571958 team. While he was playing football, he met the love 30 of his life, Polly Mishoe. After a threemonth courtship, they wed 31 and enjoyed fiftyeight years of marriage; and 32 33 Whereas, he was drafted by the New York Giants but was cut in 34 the final round, an event that was to bless many in his home State 35 of South Carolina, where he returned to teach and coach in Horry 36 County. After serving as assistant coach to Buddy Sasser for some 37 years, he took over as head coach for the Conway Tigers and 38 coached winning teams from 1971 to 1978. As coach, he headed 39 up the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Conway High 40 School and for years carried many young men to the FCA National 41 Conference in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He helped start the 42 South Carolina FCA Conference in Horry County and helped
[3425] 2 1 sponsor the yearly state conference at the Garden City Chapel by 2 the Sea for years, carrying many children to that conference; and 3 4 Whereas, affectionately known as “Big Jules” to his family, he 5 found his greatest joy in life through helping young boys and girls, 6 as he was helped at Epworth by coaches and teachers he loved. In 7 1989, he started the Horry County Children’s Mentoring Program 8 and operated it with Polly. She was always by his side in every 9 endeavor. He continued working in that program until his death; 10 and 11 12 Whereas, he loved to write poems and short stories about his life 13 and raised money for the FCA by using his poetic gifts. A man of 14 faith, he was a founding member of The Rock Church in Conway; 15 and 16 17 Whereas, he was also the recipient of numerous awards, most 18 notably the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest 19 civilian award (1998). Of all Big Jules’s many accomplishments, 20 however, he was proudest of his children and their families; and 21 22 Whereas, Carl Julius Derrick leaves to cherish his memory his 23 loving wife, Polly, and their family of four children, seven 24 grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren: Julaan Derrick, her 25 daughter, Ashton, and her son, Brody; Rhette Stanley and her 26 husband, Rodney, and their children, Carley Stanley and Sage 27 Savage and her husband, Matt, and their daughter, Mattie Jule; 28 Dirk Derrick and his wife, Michelle, and their sons, Dakota and 29 Peyton; Merinda Luse and her husband, Steve, and their children, 30 Jentry and her husband, Charlie Childress, Stevie, Juan, and 31 Jennifer and her husband, Jerome Jacobson, and their sons, 32 Benjamin and Eric; his brother, Cecil Harmon; his sister, Annette, 33 and her husband, J.C. Smith, and family; his sister, Willie 34 Wingard; and his sister, Nell, and her husband, William Berry, and 35 their family. He was predeceased by another sister, Sarah. Big 36 Jules will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. 37 Now, therefore, 38 39 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 40 41 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 42 by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of
