Epic Story Assignment
Directions: You are writing an Epic. An Epic is a story about a journey that changes the main character. It often takes place in fantastical places and features mythical or fantastical creatures. J.R.R. Tolkien is extremely well known for his Epic novels. So as a beginning assignment for our Hobbit unit, you will write an Epic. This assignment is worth 60 points total.
Part 1: Brainstorming Packet- 10 points You will receive a packet to complete that will help you write your epic story. This is to show evident planning of your story. This is due Wednesday April 29th.
Part 2: First Draft – 10 points Using the notes and the rubric given in class, you will write the first draft of your story. It needs to be a complete draft. Your first draft is due Friday, May 1st.
Part 3: Peer Editing We will do peer editing with your first draft. Keep all of your drafts and the peer editing sheets.
Part 3.5- Optional 2 nd draft If you so choose to, you may submit a second draft that I will look over. This is not a requirement, but is highly recommended. I will not accept 2nd drafts after the date. This optional draft is due Monday, May 4th.
Part 4: Final Draft - 40 points Using the rubric, notes, and suggestions from me and your peers, you will write your final draft. This may be typed or hand written. Your final draft is due on Wednesday, May 5th.
Extra Credit Cover: You may choose to create a front cover and a back cover for your story. The front cover must include the title of your story, your name, and illustrations that go along with your story. The back cover must include a synopsis of your story and at least one review. The cover is worth 10 extra credit points. This must be turned in with your final draft on May 5th. Covers will not be accepted late and will only be accepted if turned in with a completed final draft.
