NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of Feb. 20th

The Nationwide Tour does not have an event this week but returns to Latin American next week, playing back-to-back events in Panama (March 1-4) and Chile (March 8-11). The Tour will be visiting Chile for the first time.

BIG WIN FOR SKIP KENDALL – Wisconsin's Skip Kendall snared his fourth Nationwide Tour victory on Sunday in the season-opening Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship in Bogota. Kendall entered 2012 playing on a Major Medical Extension after undergoing thumb surgery last year and only playing five events. The win earned him fully-exempt status on Tour through 2013. An alternate on Tuesday, he was informed he was in this week's PGA TOUR event, the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico, after another player withdrew.

FEDEX CUP IMPACT – In keeping with the growing number of Nationwide Tour alumni who now populate the PGA TOUR, former Tour members command the top two spots on the current FedExCup standings and 13 of the top 14. Kyle Stanley is No. 1, followed by Johnson Wagner at No. 2. The last two winners of the FedExCup, and Bill Haas, maintain NWT roots.

SPEAKING OF HAAS – Congratulations to Bill Haas on winning the PGA TOUR’s Northern Trust Open on Sunday in an exciting playoff. It was the 326th alumni victory on the PGA TOUR.

“KING RICHARD” NAMED CHIQUITA’S HONORARY CHAIRMAN – Golf has its king in Arnold Palmer, while NASCAR has its in Richard Petty. The latter has been named Honorary Chairman of the Nationwide Tour’s Chiquita Classic, which will be played Sept. 24-30 near Petty’s home base in the Charlotte, N.C. area. The winner of a record 200 NASCAR races and seven Cup championships during his illustrious career has never met a fan he won’t accommodate with a photo or autograph request, and like Palmer, arguably has had more impact on his sport than any other individual. Charlotte and the Jack Nicklaus-designed Club at Longview will host the Chiquita Classic for the first time.

PLAYING WITH THE PREZ – D.J. Brigman had no idea when he was recently elected chairman of the Nationwide Tour’s Player Advisory Council (PAC) that one of the perks would be a tee time with former President Bill Clinton. The 1999 University of New Mexico graduate enjoyed that honor in last Wednesday’s Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship presented by Samsung Pro-Am in Bogota. “President Clinton was great,” Brigman said. “He interacted with us more than we interacted with him – telling jokes and stories, asking about my life and family. He made me feel like a longtime friend right after the first hole.” President Clinton was in Colombia in support of his Foundation’s work there.

POSITIVE FIRST EXPERIENCE – Four players who were making their very first Nationwide Tour start made the cut in Bogotá – Erik Flores (T20), Hudson Swafford (T27), Paul Haley (T33) and Bio Kim (T58).

BILL CALFEE / ON THE WINNING TEAM – Apparently traveling more than 8,000 miles last week (Jacksonville to Los Angeles to Bogota to Jacksonville) did not have a significant impact on Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee’s golf game earlier this week when he went 2-0-1 in his three Underwood Cup matches played at the Donald Ross-designed Timaquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Calfee was a member of the 12-player amateur team that bested a like team of professionals 15-9 in one of the more prestigious events on the North Florida golf calendar that features /-style competition. The former University of Maryland All-American is now undefeated (3-0-3) dating back to his first appearance last year.

WELCOME ROYCE THOMPSON – Royce Thompson has joined the TOUR’s Communications staff, filling the position formerly held by Adam Wallace, who accepted a position outside the TOUR at the end of last year. A Communications & Electronic Media graduate of the University of North Florida, Royce spent the last year-and-a-half at PGA TOUR Entertainment. He will support the Nationwide Tour PR effort, which will include a handful of media official assignments, in addition to assisting Nelson Silverio with other Communications department activities.

NEXT WEEK – The Tour takes next week off before heading to the Panama Claro Championship in Panama City (March 1-4) and Chile for its first event there, the Chile Classic presented by Pacific Rubiales (March 8-11).
