Even the venerable Nancy Drew series was formulaic pablum compared to Haddixs work.My only complaints are directed toward the publisher/editor, not the author. The sample chapter of the third book in the second book is a spoiler! Do not read it, if you dont want to know all through the next book how things turn out. What were they THINKING?!For that matter, at least one of the reviews on this site was a terrible spoiler for the first book. For the love of God people....I have a picky problem with some minor point-of-view instability, which should have been picked up on by the editor and Haddix made to correct. But this is very easily forgiven in this genius-level work; it detracts from the story little if at all.To those who gave it one star just because its not appropriate for children, I would ask (other than the obvious what does age-appropriateness have to do with quality as a work?), was Anne Franks diary inappropriate for children? As soon as I was old enough to read I was given that work as a warning and reminder of what great evil does. Its a parents duty to be sure children understand this. Except in the individual child who is prone to nightmares, its good for them to read it.I also disagree that this book was not feminized enough; didnt show the heroines strongly enough. On the contrary, the female characters showed extreme strength in the context of their gender. Our culture today does no service to girls to portray in movies, cartoons and video games utterly gender-homogeneous abilities and behaviors. It is a lie. How did you get the idea for Among the Hidden? I first started thinking about Among the Hidden when my husband and I were trying to decide whether to have a third child, or whether to stop with two. All the reasons we could come up with for having or not having another baby seemed entirely subjective, more emotional than rational—except the possibility that the world was overpopulated, and it might be irresponsible to have more than two kids. I remember thinking in frustration one night, “Well, if overpopulation were that bad Back to Book of a problem, there’d be a law, that nobody could have a third child!” My next thought was, “What if there was a law like that?” I knew instantly that I had a good idea for a book, regardless of what my husband and I decided. Was there ever a two-child rule? I made up that rule, but it’s not entirely far-fetched. For many years, China has had a more stringent law: families there are limited to one child. But there are some exceptions to that rule, and the circumstances and enforcement methods in China are different from those in my book. (You could probably tell that Among the Hidden wasn’t set in China.)
