6 ABHIKRAM + PANIKA PLANNING, ARCHITECTURE, CONSERVATION, AND INTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANTS OUR CONVICTIONS AND BELIEFS Abhikram (Sanskrit word for ‘initiation) is a Planning, Architecture, Interior and Conservation Consultancy, established by Parul Zaveri and Nimish Patel in 1979, with a view to explore a design direction and design process which make the external and the internal environment, functionally, psychologically, environmentally and spiritually, more contextual, integrated and comfort- able, for its users.

The design approach is based on the following convictions, beliefs & attitudes:

• Conservation of resources ought to be the primary guideline for all projects; • Innovativeness, for a developing society, is a necessity, not a luxury; • It is necessary to design buildings which in their form, space and technology, reflect the continuity of the Indian traditions; • Responsible architecture will evolve only by contextualising the design in all aspects; • Every problem, irrespective of its nature, magnitude or constraints, has an appropriate solution; • Correct solutions will only come through a clarity in the identification of the problems, the selection of the correct tools, and their proper application; and • The design and construction process must ensure freedom for creative inputs at all levels of participation.

After 23 years of efforts in initiating directions, approaches, process and use of traditional materials, technologies and genetically inherited/developed skills, ABHIKRAM made room, for PANIKA in 2002, which concentrates on the dissemi- nation of experience and knowledge, by undertaking consultancy of projects of varying scales which attempt to re-established the relevance of traditional decision-making processes in contemporary context and to conserve energy through Passive Human Comfort Systems. It has also made room for PANIKA CRAFTS AND TECHNOLOGIES, which undertakes conservation man- agement assignments, and support the survival of the genetically inherited/developed skills, through promotion of craft based skills and products.

Presently both the firms are operating with Abhikram concentrating on paths which need to be initiated.

Such assumptions are myth, in addition to being detrimental to the objectives of resource conservation, which ought to be a priority in the developing country. Success of the Torrent Research Centre at Ahmedabad, India, as Asia’s largest known passive cooled contemporary building, dispels this myth. This building will recover its construction costs within 13 years of its operation, from the savings of electrical energy.

The impact of designing build environment which minimize the use of electrical/mechanical energy for its functioning, as well as for the human comfort levels within it, can be very widespread if adopted by all architects. It has the potential to generate a snowballing effect which can change the scenario in the power sector in any country, and can help bridge the gap between the increasing demand and the inadequately available supply. We see built environment as an investment which generates returns for its owner, just like any other investment, and design our building accordingly.

Cultural Heritage Conservation & Adaptive Reuse Maximum deterioration of India’s culture heritage has occurred in 20th century, due to the change in the value system of the society, which associated “progress” with the rejection of almost anything connected with the past. A vast stock of heritage buildings remains either un-utilized, or under-utilized, in spite of their potential of bridging the gap of housing needs. Lack of familiarity with traditional materials and technologies, amongst the currently trained professionals, has kept them away from greater involvement in heritage conservation projects.

We have established through our work that restoration of ruins and historic buildings, using traditional materials, technologies and craftsmen: • Is neither difficult nor expensive, nor time consuming. • Is possible with minimal use of contemporary materials and technologies. • Enhances the lifespan of the building • Generates employment for the craftsmen, and supports the continuity of this wealth of knowledge and wisdom.

2 Contemporary Projects, using Traditional Materials and Technologies The building using traditional materials and technologies have much longer life span, became abundantly evident when the craftsmen explained that “life of cement dominated buildings ended at 80-90 years, and the life of lime dominated building begin at 60-70 years.” laboratory tests of construction stone have confirmed all the knowledge about the characteristics com- municated by the craftsmen.

The Oberoi Udaivillas, Udaipur Samsara Resort, Dechu Mud House at the farm, Ahmedabad Rural School, Near Jaipur Re-establishing the use and the relevance of the traditional decision making processes, materials, technologies and craftsmen in the contemporary context and buildings, is the responsibility of every designer, desiring to ensure culture continuity. Centuries of knowledge and information, on the characteristics and the use of traditional materials, is likely to disappear in next few decades, unless the demand for the genetically inherited /developed skills, is generated by the current stock of designers and architects, resulting in the present generation of young craftmen returning to earn their livelihood from their traditional skills and knowledge.

Sustainable Contemporary Architecture One of the strengths of the architecture of India is the anonymity of the designer. The other strength lies in common sense be- ing the common denominator in the most decision making processes. Modern Indian architecture has to find its own relevance as well as a balance. It lies in the in-depth understanding of its traditional wisdom, as well as the collective aspirations of the society.

Nursery Classroom, Ahmedabad Primary School, Ahmedabad Row Housing Development Golf & Country Club, Ahmedabad Our attempts are to explore directions in design principles, appropriate technologies and aesthetic idioms in a holistic manner, so as to provide for our aspirations on the foundations of our continuing aspirations. We also attempt to achieve a balance be- tween continuity with the past without fossilizing it, and a change for the future without making it incongruent with its context. We believe that responsible architecture can only emerge if the design is contextualised in all respects.

Craft Based Interiors Interiors design has the potential to support and develop a very wide range of traditional crafts and blend them with the emerg- ing dynamics needs of society, without compromising with the qualities of timelessness, taste, simplicity and common sense.

Mud House at the Farm, Architects’ Own Residence, Monsoon Palace Resort Samsara Resort Guest Room, Ahmedabad Ahmedabad Guest Room, Udaipur Dechu Unless we generated employment for the skills of the traditional craftsperson, through our designs, many of the crafts and skills become extinct. With them, we will also lose an enormous wealth of knowledge an traditions.

Number S.no Item As principal Associate Energy Security Outlook (Published in 2015): I led research and contributed a chapter on residential and 1 commercial buildings that provides an overview of the sector. The publication aims to identify key opportunities for various players of the sector in light of current policy scenario.

2 Yes Bank TERI BCSD Survey of Green Real Estate Sector 2014: Lead researcher and author of the publication highlighting the current policy barriers for financial sector to adopt and mainstream green buildings in India.

Stakeholder engagement, outreach of GRIHA and capacity building on GRIHA (2010- on-2014): As a project supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, I led business development, including interaction with the government agencies at various levels including at Municipal Body level, State level and at the Centre to ensure design and implementation of institutional structures that would facilitate implementation of sustainable habitats and GRIHA. My role also encompassed regular interaction with 3 industry and private sector to identify needs/ challenges for implementing sustainable habitats, as faced by the private sector- identify gaps and implement potential solutions for the same. I have organised and conducted over 50 one, two and three day workshops, and five international level conferences on GRIHA. I have managed more than 300 GRIHA projects under various levels of implementaiton, including their financial transactions, document assessment, and on site implementation of GRIHA across different construction sites in India. Green Buildings – Policy and Practice within the European Union and India (2011): I am the principal researcher and co-author of the publication commissioned by the European Commission as part of the 4 Environment Component of the EU-India Action Plan Support Facility. The aim of the project was to provide inputs for enhanced policies, legislation and instruments to increase national energy savings through the buildings sector in India. Buildings and climate change (2008-10): As the project in charge and main author, I prepared the regional report on greenhouse gas emission reduction potential from buildings in India. The overall aim of this 5 assignment with UNEP-Sustainable Buildings Climate Initiative was to assess the energy use in buildings and make policy recommendations such that the same are directed towards minimizing the associated green house gas emissions from India. National Action Plan on Climate Change (2009): I have been engaged in the formulation and detailing of the “Mission on Sustainable Habitats” under India’s “National Action Plan on Climate Change”. I have also 6 provided inputs and facilitated identification of the role of business through several rounds of stakeholder (private and public) consultations in implementation of the Habitats Mission that was presented to the Prime Minister of India for consideration and further action (2009). The ‘State of Play’ of sustainable buildings in India (2008): I led the research and prepared a report on the ‘State of Play’, which provides a representative understanding of sustainable building activity in India. The 7 report explains the state of sustainable buildings and construction in India including best practices, successes, barriers and recommendations for further implementation towards mitigation of climate change impacts. Sub-market study on energy efficiency in Indian buildings (2008): Led a study on residential and commercial submarkets in urban India conducted for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). 8 The study identified the various policies that apply to the buildings and construction sector as a whole along with various fiscal incentive systems created at the central, state and the local government levels to encourage energy efficiency in the country. High performance commercial buildings in India (2007): Provided technical inputs to assess and forecast the market demand of building materials and energy systems recommended by the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC). This project on ‘High Performance Commercial Buildings in India’ under the Asia Pacific Partnership aims to establish relevance and impact of low energy passive strategies and energy code 9 recommended measures on improving energy performance of buildings in five climatic zones of India. Key outcomes of the project shall enable establishment of markets for relevant products and services, quantify GHG saving potential in such buildings, build implementation capacities for energy efficient buildings and provide policy and financial directives to the Government of India. The project is co-funded by the US Department of State and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India.

12 Enabling design and development of sustainable habitats and buildings through design review, efficiency enhancement studies, techno economic feasibility, capacity building of stakeholders (2006-2012): As a team leader my responsibilities and tasks included developing country/state client interaction to communicate economic, environmental and social benefits of sustainable habitats, formulation of project proposals, formalization of contract documents, development of methodologies for project execution and implementation, project coordination, review and evaluation of the concept design, recommendations on energy efficiency, integration of renewable energy systems, materials of 10 construction, water efficiency and waste management; techno economic feasibility study, internal monitoring and checking for technical consistency, interaction with client, project reporting, providing technical assistance in project implementation, monitoring and evaluation. My tasks also included capacity building of team members from client side through presentations, technical sessions, round tables/discussions with manufacturers/suppliers of energy efficient, renewable energy products and site visits to completed projects. I have initiated and executed more than 25 projects for government, corporate and institutional clients. Policy research on building energy efficiency in India (2006): TERI was engaged by the Asia Business Council to carry out primary and secondary research on the topic of energy efficiency in urban (residential and commercial) buildings in India. The commissioned study on India was incorporated as a part of a pan-Asia research effort lead by the council. The objectives for the study include education of a business audience to the state of energy efficiency policies in the region, 11 identification of the common barriers to improved energy efficiency in urban buildings and related policy prescriptions, the highlighting of successful case studies, and the identification of best practices as they pertain to policy development and implementation in the government sector, and efficient design and energy management in the private sector. I provided technical inputs to the initiative and engaged in several rounds of stakeholder (private and public) consultations to carry out the research. The document has been published. Organization of capacity building programmes of varied duration (1-3 days) on several aspects of sustainable and green habitats: My specific tasks in these programmes included: Identification of needs of the target group; formulation 12 of course structure; preparation of course material; coordination; presentation; interaction with participants to tackle specific problems; get feedback and incorporate useful suggestions into the programme.
