5 HISTORY LIVES HERE Carroll County was formed on Christmas Day in 1832 from Stark, Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson and Tuscarawas counties and named after Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Terminus, located west of Magnolia at the junction of Stark, Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The stone surveying marker marked the completion of the first step in opening the lands northwest of the for settlement. The county sits along one of the major overland routes from the east. The Great Trail, also known as the Tuscarawas Path, was used by Native Americans, European explorers, fur traders, missionaries, land agents and military expeditions. During the French-Indian War, Maj. Robert Rogers and 38 rangers passed through Carroll County en route to Fort Pitt after taking Fort Detroit from the French. The Continental Army under General Lachlan McIntosh camped along the route during the American Revolution.
