The World’s Most Powerful Spirits & Wine Brands, 2015 1 INTRODUctION We’ve witnessed brands scale the ranks and others fade into obscurity, but after 10 years of The Power 100, we can say without a doubt, there is never a dull moment in the wine and spirits industry! The last decade has seen the industry undergo major consolidation, creating a number of drinks brand powerhouses. The acquisition of Allied Domeq by Pernod Ricard and Fortune Brands in 2005 was one of the first in a spate of high-profile acquisitions, which has led to the more streamlined market we see today. The likes of Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Bacardi Martini and Beam Suntory dominate the market with a portfolio of mega-brands covering each sector. To honour 10 years of The Power 100, we have celebrated the decade’s high-flyers, analysed the decline of some brands, and reviewed our data to crown one brand the success story of the decade.

  • The 25 Most Important Bourbons Ever Made
The 25 Most Important Bourbons Ever Mad If you asked a spirits expert a quarter century ago to name the most important bourbons ever made, they might have wondered whether America’s home-grown whiskey deserved such analytical consideration. Bourbon was in the doldrums, unappreciated and underdrunk. But today, thanks to a boom that shifted into high gear around the turn of the century, bourbon is arguably the most talked-about, most obsessed-over and most in-demand spirit in the world. To better assess how we got here, we consulted with 23 bourbon experts, including distillers, journalists, authors, whiskey-bar owners and one whiskey-centric-liquor-store proprietor. Each participant named five to ten bourbons that made a difference—not their favorite bourbons, or the ones they thought tasted best, but those bottles that were influential, innovative or otherwise held a significant place in bourbon history. They were allowed to reach way back to pre-Prohibition years, cite bourbons they could never have tasted, and yes, in the case of distillers, include their own creations. (One self-serving endorsement would not land them a spot on this list, however, as every bourbon here received multiple votes.) The final order was determined strictly by the votes received. There were a number of ties in the lower rankings. In those cases, editorial judgment determined final rankings. In a few instances, the panelists indicated complete lines of bourbons that bore the same name, not just a single bottling. In other cases, panelists pointed out different bottlings within a single line. As the arguments behind these choices were often similar, these votes were sometimes combined and placed within the rankings as a bourbon label’s complete line.

Port Dundas was one of the founding members of the grain distillers’ conglomerate DCL. Port Dundas later went on to merge with its neighbouring distillery, Cowlairs and another one in 1902, Dundashill. Port Dundas produced grain whisky for many blended whisky brands owned by Diageo such as, Johnnie Walker, J&B, Bell's, Black & White, Vat 69, Haig and White Horse. The site would produce an astonishing 39 million litres of spirit each year before it was shut indefinitely. Sadly after a century of distilling, in 2010 Diageo made the decision to focus their efforts on grain production and expaned Cameronbridge side, and in 2011 production ceased and the site was demolished. Old bottlings can still be found, however, making this whisky rare and special. • The Ranking of the World's Million-Case Spirits Brands 2019
THE RANKING OF THE WORLD’S MILLION-CASE SPIRITS BRANDS 2019 001 Cover DI MILLIONAIRES 2019 FINAL.indd 1 04/06/2019 14:58 The millionaires’ JUNE 2019 DRINKSINT.COM 3 COMMENT The volume game Regardless of Trump’s tariff wars, Brexit and other socio-economic issues, the spirits industry is thriving. And once again The Millionaires’ Club bears witness to the movements of million-case spirits brands all over the globe. Ninety-two of the 153 millionaire brands listed in the 2019 supplement demonstrate an increase in volumes, so the industry shows no signs of slowing down. The biggest volume players are always from Asia due to the huge populations and brand loyalty in major markets, with soju’s Jinro now boasting 87m cases. But it’s also been fascinating to see Diageo’s Indian brandy Men’s Club virtually double in growth despite it showing decline over the previous four years. Looking at Europe, Martell has had a great year. A huge 18% growth shows how cognac is returning to its former glory in terms of international sales and the same can almost be said for vodka in the US as it appears the market is no longer in free-fall, with many of the big players returning to growth. It’s possible that volume sales will dwindle in importance as future generations of consumers continue to drink less but better – quality over quantity. The assets may shrink and the players may change, but this game of volumes isn’t going to end any time soon.
