Mason Bond Cobram 58711709 8.12 Be careful to check players’ numbers against your report card and the list of players on the team sheets provided by the club. In describing the incident use phrases like:- Shannon Bond Cobram 0456 178204 “S. Smith No. 6 of Birdsville for striking B. Brown No. 7 of Yass with the right Mason Boschetti Numurkah 0437 127926 forearm to the side of the head”. Stuart Bott Kyabram 0409 438530 “J. Kate Boyd Kialla 0448 512162 “Striking or attempting to strike” (use when you think there is a chance that both players may claim that the blow did not find their mark, this avoids losing a case on Aaron Brasier Lancaster 0457 186485 a technical point). Craig Brauman Kialla 0419 775868 NOTE: Tribunals require us to enter sufficient detail on the report to provide the Keldi Brauman Kialla 0419 775868 charged player with enough knowledge to defend the charge as written. It is Macey Brauman Kialla 0419 775868 imperative that you keep this detail as brief as possible by using phrases as Aidan Briggs Kyabram 0448 362092 suggested above. Further details should be carefully noted and discussed with the Advocate who will accompany you to the Tribunal hearing. James Brook Nagambie 0458 802152 Russell Brown Nathalia 0408 597317 John Brunskill Cobram 0422 325315 Jack Caia Kialla 0407 529 983 Tony Caia Kialla 0438 568167 John Caiafa Toolamba 0428 759963 Brayden Cain Shepparton 0429 837562 Ronald Cain Shepparton 0428 315874 Steve Cameron Katamatite 0458 014467 Peter Chalkley Shepparton 0458 277041 Xavier Chalkley Shepparton 0429 517134 Sam Clark Tatura 0423 481195 Christopher Cole Shepparton 0409 409250 James Cole Shepparton 58315866 Nathan Cole Shepparton 0429 315866 10. 23. Liam Collier Kyabram 0400 871054 8. REPORTING PLAYERS Donald Conway Shepparton 0407 057468 8.1 Nobody enjoys this aspect of umpiring and the easy way out is to ignore the Hugh Conway Shepparton 0407 057468 reportable offence by conveniently not seeing the incident or sending the player off Mark Cornick Mooroopna 0429 389431 without reporting. To ignore offences encourages the offender to make life more Michael Costello Echuca 0414 768893 difficult for the next Umpire and you will jeopardize your own future appointments if you fail in your duty to report such players. Dale Cox Numurkah 0438 821230 Thomas Davies Invergordon 0459 556753 8.2 Simply put, the reason that our game is not as disciplined as some other sports is that Patrick Delahunty Shepparton 0402 538662 over the years umpires and officials have been too lenient. Each umpire has a Kurtis Dixon Kialla Lakes 0407 504673 responsibility to report every offence that he or she sees. There is no rule which Simon Dixon Wunghnu 0447 621112 allows you to ignore an offence because it is minor. The independent Tribunal will determine the degree of severity. Michael Donovan Toolamba 0407 564104 Samuel Doyle shepparton 0467 369539 8.3 You must become familiar with the AFL Laws of Australian Football and with the terminology used for reportable offences as you are required to use the same words Bridget Drum Congupna 0428 801757 in your report i.e if the charge is “striking a player” then you report the “offending Peter Dyhin Tocumwal 0406 532797 player (Number, Name and Team)”. Robert Ebbott Shepparton 0407 232959 NOTE: Offences made against an umpire anywhere on the day of the match are Jeremy Edwards Numurkah 0409 434505 reportable.

Abby Favaro Shepparton 0400 622611 8.4 When an incident occurs get to the scene quickly and use your voice to signal your Richard Feehan Murchison 0419 262527 presence. You may caution but never threaten a player. Never grab a player or put James Flanagan Kialla 0402 721969 yourself in a position where you may accidently be struck.

Steve Flory Rushworth 0418 384212 8.5 If cautions go unheeded, be prepared to report any offence which occurs. Do not Lachlan Ford Grahamvale 58222843 wave your report card around until you are sure you have sufficient evidence. It is Thomas Ford Grahamvale 0402 756860 wise to pause while continuing to settle players down.

Mark Foulsham Kyabram 0427 746268 8.6 Tell the player concerned and any other player/official who will be named in your Douglas Fraser Cobram 0429 293205 report. You are required to tell the reported player at least before the Jamie Fulton Numurkah 58622691 commencement of the next quarter. If the reported player leaves the field before Wayne Geisler Nathalia 0418 176143 notification, you should advise the Captain or Acting Captain prior to the Ross Graham Shepparton 0428 709848 commencement of the next quarter. Never get involved in arguing with players about details of the report, it is sufficient to advise the player that he is reported. Leigh Gregory Tatura 0418 547879 Domenic Gugliotti Mooroopna 0456 027435 8.7 Next you should re-commence the game, being careful to do this by awarding a free kick to any player who may have been offended against by the reported player. Nick Gugliotti Mooroopna 0488 292281 Tony Hajro Shepparton 0417 517756 8.8 It is more important than ever to assume strong control after any incident, and Brayden Hall Kyabram 0448 522782 quickly penalize any attempt at “evening up” or even unsettling another player with “physical” play. Clay Hall Mooroopna 58254219 Derek Hall Mooroopna 0428 597308 8.9 The umpires are instructed to take a much stronger line with Coaches, particularly in Daniel Halliday Kyabram 0428 552870 relation to matters of discipline and violence as reflected by the performance of Brett Hancock Mooroopna 0447 254055 players under the Coaches’ control. It is considered that the Coaches should set an example to those under their control and moderate their own behaviour accordingly. Connor Hawes Kyabram 0499 273344 As Coaches come under direct control of the Field Umpire, it is expected that either Glenn Hayes Deniliquin 0428 629259 a greater incidence of reports of Coaches will occur or there will be an improvement David Henderson Shepparton 0488 947717 in behaviour patterns. 24. 9. 7. UNIFORM AND DRESS STANDARDS Oskar Henderson Shepparton 0438 523398

7.1 An umpire’s standard of dress on and off the field can make a lasting impression and John Herridge Eildon 0418 563389 drastically affect your overall performance in the eyes of players and spectators Jim Hilder Kyabram 58521849 alike. If “you look like an umpire” then you will gain their acceptance and half the Bradley Hocking Kyabram 0474 133282 battle is won. On the other hand a sloppy appearance will drag the rest of your Robert Hocking Cobram 0428 712441 performance down.
