These are the basic tenets with which to enter the world of Christian Marclay’s djTRIO, especially in the case of their live recordings. World-renowned multi-media artist Marclay may be best known these days for his globally embraced film collage piece “The Clock,” but he began by redefining the roles of “musician,” “DJ,” and even “artist” itself. Since the late ‘70s, Marclay has created art by masterfully mistreating both vinyl and phonographic equipment, using them both in a manner more consistent with the way an abstract sculptor employs raw materials in the service of a larger vision. Sometimes these sonic journeys utilizing a turntable as a sextant have been in-the-moment experiences and sometimes they’ve been captured for posterity, but 21 September 2002 on Cuneiform Records happens to be both.

  • Leonardo Music Journal [1])
IntroductIon LMJ 23: Sound Art What’s in a name? That which we call “Music” is judged by the full weight of history and fashion; substitute “Sound Art” and most of these preconceptions fall away. As recently as a decade ago the reaction instead might have been bemusement. The term Sound Art was coined in the late 1960s to describe sonic activities taking place outside the concert hall: interactive installations, listening walks, environmental recordings, open duration sound events—even “happenings” and performance art were occasionally lumped under this rubric. For many years Sound Art remained an interstitial activity, falling between music and visual art, embraced fully by neither. Many composers viewed self-styled Sound Artists as failed mem- bers of their own club pursuing “a career move . a branding exercise” (as Chris Mann is quoted as saying in Ricardo Arias’s contribution to this volume of Leonardo Music Journal [1]). Most museums and galleries, in turn, shied away from an art form that was often stunningly unvisual even by the standards of Conceptual Art and for which there appeared to be no mar- ket. (Gallery assistants often found it very irritating to boot.) By 2013, however, Sound Art clearly has been accepted as an identifiable musical genre, an art world commodity, and a subject of critical study. Its newfound visibility can be traced to a number of aesthetic, technological and economic factors. First and foremost, I suspect, is the ubiquity of video in contemporary life: On the heels of the ever-declining price of camcord- ers, cellphone cameras have brought the world—from out-of-tune Van Halen concerts to the Arab Spring—to our laptops, and every video clip is invariably accompanied by sound.

In this thesis sound art is analysed from the media arts perspective. In terms of preservation and theoretical contextualization, sound art is considered to be an endangered practice and this study aims to identify which elements of the practice are at risk and why. To approach the subject, first, the research aims to define what elements differentiate sound art installations and sound art environments from traditional visual art and music.

The concept was developed in the PST X series, which provides a suitable basis for the type of fast and dry sounds that perfectly fit the world of Hip-hop & Electronica percussion. It is executed with the DJs 45 set consisting of a 12" Crash, 12" Ride and 12" Hats. Serious Music Media » Eli Keszler serious music media PR, Management, Consulting and Festival Curating home news producing projects artists music festivals & consulting other sounds contact about Eli Keszler reviews “L-Carrier ,” demonstrates another facet of Mr. Keszler’s work: the construction of large-scale, interactive installation pieces, which can function alone or in tandem with live performers. (“Catching Net,” a two-CD set newly issued on the German label Pan, includes contrasting versions of a similarly conceived piece.) In essence “L-Carrier” is an installation of piano wires from 3 to 70 feet long, amplified and struck with mechanical beaters triggered by input from a remote Web page hosted by Turbulence, a Web-art initiative. “At Eyebeam, Mr. Keszler’s spindly lattice stretches across a gallery wall and extends to the ceiling beams, filling the reverberant space with the steely pangs and groans of a ghost ship rocking on a river’s currents. For Thursday’s opening-night event, presented by Eyebeam and Turbulence in conjunction with the Issue Project Room’s Darmstadt Institute, Mr. Keszler led an octet in a live version of the work. Anthony Coleman, playing Farfisa organ, and Geoff Mullen, who applied metal bolts and a glass slide to a partly unstrung electric guitar, worked mostly in tandem with Mr. Keszler’s busy flux. Ashley Paul, on clarinet and alto saxophone, and Reuben Son, a bassoonist, provided long, slightly funereal tones; the violinists C. Spencer Yeh and Catherine Lamb and the cellist Alex Waterman countered with warm sustained chords and flitting squeals. For just over an hour Mr.

  • It Was Sometime in 1974 That a Number of Composition Students Were
It was sometime in 1974 that a number of composition students were sitting at a table in the cafeteria of the New England Conservatory discussing the various musical issues of the day when Donald Martino, one of our Faculty Fearless Leaders, turned to Anthony Coleman and said “You know, Anthony, you are a truly literate musician.” Over the years, this condition has only intensified. I remember this quote now, in 2007, not only because it was true at the time, but also because after listening to the music on this CD I am deeply impressed that Anthony is able to draw from so many varied, disparate, and even contradictory sources, and still emerge with such a singular and consistent voice. It takes a truly literate and sophisticated mind to perceive the common threads of many languages and to sense their underlying unity. Listening to any of the five works on this CD is to enter into a particular world, highly specific in material but nearly hallucinatory in formal development. The music starts, becomes linear, suspends, goes vertical, goes backward, goes forward, produces vague memories, and ends. What happened? Something. Anthony was born in New York City in 1955 and is a pure product of that city’s musical energy. In high school he obsessed over Duke Ellington (a not-so-common thing for a high school kid in the late sixties and early seventies), hearing the band live for the first time on his fourteenth birthday. He subsequently got to know Ellington and the band personally, hanging out with them at gigs, and attending a workshop that they gave at the University of Wisconsin in the summer of 1972.

The Secret Gardeners: An Ethnography of Improvised Music in Berlin (2012-13) Tom Arthurs PhD Music The University of Edinburgh 2015 Abstract This thesis addresses the aesthetics, ideologies and practicalities of contemporary European Improvised Music-making - this term referring to the tradition that emerged from 1960s American jazz and free jazz, and that remains, arguably, one of today's most misunderstood and under-represented musical genres. Using a multidisciplinary approach drawing on Grounded Theory, Ethnography and Social Network Analysis, and bounded by Berlin's cosmopolitan local scene of 2012-13, I define Improvised Music as a field of differing-yet-interconnected practices, and show how musicians and listeners conceived of and differentiated between these sub-styles, as well as how they discovered and learned to appreciate such a hidden, ‘difficult’ and idiosyncratic artform.
