(VERBENACEAE)* IN AUSTRALIA Ahmad Abid Munir State Herbarium, Botanic Gardens, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia 5000 Abstract A taxonomic revision of Faradaya in Australia is presented. The following two species are recognised: F. albertisii and E splendida. F. albertisii is confirmed from Australia. A wide range of material has been examined from Malesia and Oceania. The affinities and distribution are considered for the genus and each species. A key to the species is provided and a detailed description of each species is supplemented by an illustration. Taxonomic History of the Genus The genus Faradaya was described by F. Mueller (1865) with one species, E splendida, the type of which came from Queensland. Originally it was placed in the Bignoniaceae, but soon after its publication, Seemann (1865) referred the genus to the "Natural Order Verbenaceae, closely related to Clerodendrum and Oxera". The family Verbenaceae has been accepted for the genus by all subsequent botanists. Earlier, one Faradaya collection from Tonga and another from Fiji were respectively described by Seemann (1862) and Asa Gray (1862) as new species of Clerodendrum. In view of their difference from other Clerodendrum taxa, Asa Gray (1862) formed for them a new section of the genus namely Clerodendrum sect. Tetrathyranthus A. Gray. Subsequently, Seemann (1865) recognised both types of the section Tetrathyranthus as Faradaya species and thus reduced this section to synonymy under Faradaya. Bentham (1870, 1876) divided the family Verbenaceae into different tribes, with Faradaya in the tribe Viticeae subtribe Oxereae. -

Gender, ritual Pouwer Jan and social formation Gender, ritual in West Papua and social formation A configurational analysis comparing Kamoro and Asmat Gender,in West Papua ritual and social Gender, ritual and social formation in West Papua in West ritual and social formation Gender, This study, based on a lifelong involvement with New Guinea, compares the formation in West Papua culture of the Kamoro (18,000 people) with that of their eastern neighbours, the Asmat (40,000), both living on the south coast of West Papua, Indonesia. The comparison, showing substantial differences as well as striking similarities, contributes to a deeper understanding of both cultures. Part I looks at Kamoro society and culture through the window of its ritual cycle, framed by gender. Part II widens the view, offering in a comparative fashion a more detailed analysis of the socio-political and cosmo-mythological setting of the Kamoro and the Asmat rituals. These are closely linked with their social formations: matrilineally oriented for the Kamoro, patrilineally for the Asmat. Next is a systematic comparison of the rituals. Kamoro culture revolves around cosmological connections, ritual and play, whereas the Asmat central focus is on warfare and headhunting. Because of this difference in cultural orientation, similar, even identical, ritual acts and myths differ in meaning. The comparison includes a cross-cultural, structural analysis of relevant myths. This publication is of interest to scholars and students in Oceanic studies and those drawn to the comparative study of cultures. Jan Pouwer (1924) started his career as a government anthropologist in West New Guinea in the 1950s and 1960s, with periods of intensive fieldwork, in particular among the Kamoro. -

Recent analyses of DNA sequences did not solve the controversy, mainly due to limited taxonomic or character sampling. The present study is based on DNA sequence data from thirteen Keywords: genes (one mitochondrial and twelve nuclear markers) for 57 taxa, representative of all relevant Centropomidae species. Five of the nuclear markers are new for fish phylogenetic studies. The monophyly of Centrop- Lates Psammoperca omidae sensu Greenwood was supported by both maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of a Ambassidae concatenated data set (12,888 bp aligned). No support was found for previous morphological hypothe- Niphon spinosus ses suggesting that ambassids are closely allied to the Centropomidae. -

M00I2 ABSTRACT: Pempheris rapa Mooi, n. sp., is distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: scales strongly ctenoid and adherent; no gular scales; pelvic axillary scale absent; dorsal fin with six spines; in speci mens 35 mm SL or larger, gill-raker counts on first arch 11-13 + 26-29 = 37-42 (usually 38-40); lateral-line scales 72-84 (rarely fewer than 76); no anterior light organ; anal fin with 33-37 segmented rays. A second species of Pempheris of uncertain identification, but a member of the cycloid-scaled and keeled species complex that includes P. oualensis, was found among the collec tions of the new species. A New Freshwater Catfish (Pisces: Ariidae) from Northern Australia

Pierce* Abstract A new species of fork-tailed catfish is described on the basis of 31 specimens collected in northern Australia between the Fitzroy River (Western Australia) and the Mitchell River (Queensland). Arius midgleyi sp. novo grows to at least 1.3 m TL and is distinguished from other Australo-Papuan ariids by a combination of charac ters including snout shape, barbel length, eye size, tooth arrangement and gill raker number and position. Comparison is made with other ariid species occurring in northern Australian rivers, including the morphologically similar A. leptaspis (Bleeker). Introduction The Timor Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria drainage systems (Lake 1971) approx imately represent the Leichhardtian zoogeographic region of Whitley (1947). The rainfall pattern in this region is dominated by the wet monsoon (occurring within the period November to April). Most rivers here traverse a flat coastal plain about 15 km wide before reaching the sea (Lake 1971). These rivers commonly possess wide flood plains and low gradients, often contracting to a chain of waterholes during the dry season; some (Gregory River; Fitzroy to Daly Rivers) have reaches of rapids or very deep gorges. The average annual discharge from this region is 69000 billion litres (Lake 1971), most of it occurring during the wet season. Five of Australia's 18 species of fork-tailed catfishes (Ariidae) are common in this northern region, yet were overlooked by Whitley (1947) and Iredale and Whitley (1938). The members of this family, which is distributed circumglobally in the tropics and subtropics, may inhabit the sea, rivers within tidal influence, or fresh waters. -

Abstract In total, 58 species of waterbird were recorded on the grassed floodplain of the Middle Fly during surveys in December 1994 and April 1995. The floodplain is an important dry-season habitat both in New Guinea and internationally, with an estimated (k s.e.) 587249 f 62741 waterbirds in December. Numbers decreased 10-fold between December and April to 54914 f 9790: the area was less important during the wet season when it was more deeply inundated. Only magpie geese, comb-crested jacanas and spotted whistling-ducks were recorded breeding on the floodplain. The waterbird community was numerically dominated by fish-eating species, especially in December. Substantial proportions of the populations of many species that occurred on the Middle Fly in December were probably dry-season migrants from Australia, suggesting that migration across Torres Strait is important to the maintenance of waterbird numbers in both New Guinea and Australia. As of 31 December 2007 the Government Pension Fund – Global held shares worth some NOK 1,274 million in the company. Barrick Gold is a Canadian mining company, which, in several countries, has been accused of causing extensive environmental degradation. The Council has investigated whether riverine tailings disposal from the Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea generates severe environmental damage, and finds it established that the mining operation at Porgera entails considerable pollution. The Council attributes particular importance to the heavy metals contamination, especially from mercury, produced by the tailings.
