II Program

Day I: General Introduction to Chinese Day II: The criticism of the ruler. Main text: the king of issued a decree that rewards those who criticize him (Zhan Guo Ce, 8.12) Day III: Access of persons of humble origin to important positions. Main text: Su fails in Qin and after practicing the chuaimo receives the position of prime minister in (Zhan Guo Ce, 3.2) Day IV: The moral power of the wise. Main text: Yang admonishes the king of Qi (Zhan Guo Ce, 11,5) Day V: The talent. Main text: The Shang Xiang of . Day VI: The government based on benevolence. Main text: Liang Hui Wang of Mencius. Day VII: The government based on rewards and punishments. Main text: Zhudao of Feizi. Day VIII: The government of no action. Main text: the Tiandao of Zhuangzi. Day IX: Workshop in text commentary. Day X: Presentation of papers.

III Objectives

This course is open to students of any specialty, high school students or professionals who are interested in the intellectual foundations of East Asia's thought. This course will provide the student a basic understanding of East Asia's cultures. Chinese students enrolled in Spanish universities are also encourage to attend to this course.

IV Teaching Methods This course will conducted by the exegesis of chinese classical philosophical texts. Each class will have two parts: In the first part, a philosophical text will be discussed. In the second, students must provide observations and comments.

V Materials The professor will give students original text in Classical Chinese accompanied by their translation to Spanish.

VI Evaluation The aim of this course is that students acquire a basic understanding of the intellectual foundations of Chinese culture. The evaluation will consist of a brief work of no more than six pages that will be exposed orally in a presentation from ten to fifteen minutes.
