Paul Callomon is responsible for the maintenance and use of the Academy’s Malacology Collection, the world’s third largest shell collection. He is supervising its upgrade and refurbishment. He is a former president of the Philadelphia Shell Club and secretary of the American Malacological Society.

Callomon has been publishing works about mollusks since 1993. As managing editor of Elle Scientific Publications in Japan, he produced and illustrated The Living Pleurotomariidae (Anseeuw & Goto, 1996) and the two-volume Catalogue and Bibliography of the Marine Shell- bearing of Japan (1999 and 2001), which he co-authored with Shun’ichi Higo and Yoshihiro Goto. He was technical director of the full digital facsimile of George Perry’s Arcana, or Museum of Natural History published in 2009 jointly by Temple University Press and the Academy of Natural Sciences.

Callomon has written more than 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals with a focus on the Japanese mollusca, and has given presentations at many conferences. He has published thousands of color figures of mollusks and is an acknowledged expert in shell photography.
