ver the past year I’ve written about the By Steve Owens Ofinance and insur- of Provident ance process, the importance Insurance of disciplined and timely introduction to the business manager, the function of the business manager and the value of finance and insurance sales. Over the next few months I want to elaborate further on the value each product provides. We all know that insurance is a subject most customers would prefer not to have to deal with. It’s an intangible item that you don’t see it till you need it but “it’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it”. Let’s take mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) for ex- ample. Everyone wants it – but most don’t want to pay for it. We know that, because if we were giving it away “free” every customer would gladly accept it. Have you ever had a customer say “no” to something that you were providing for free? Now, I’m not advocating that you should provide MBI free of charge to your customers because finance and insurance is an important source of profit, as well as protection, for your dealership. I’m really just making the point that customers do under- stand the value of this product. Let’s look at the principal benefits provided by MBI: Customer Protection – Protecting against the cost and inconvenience of their vehicle being off the road. Budgeting today for tomorrow’s repair bills, at today’s price... and cars do break down. Dealership Protection - Customer-funded protection for your dealership against your customers’ vehicles suffering mechanical or electrical breakdown. Who does your cus- tomer blame when something goes wrong with the car they purchased from you and how many times will they tell others of that experience? Finance Company Protection – There’s a term, “bonnets up, wallets shut”. The last thing your finance company wants is for your customers to default on their payments. Custom- ers need their cars on the road and a repair invoice will often take preference over their finance commitments – and when your finance company is placed at risk, your reputation is also placed at risk. MBI is one of the most well-accepted insurance policies sold in the retail motor industry today. Provident MBI provides a level of protection customers expect and dealerships are conditioned to selling the value of this product.

n an intriguing Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal, Ia buyer has been told he can’t expect a ute to be as smooth and comfortable to ride in as a passenger car. The decision was the result of a case taken by buyer Davendra Venataya over a new Nissan Navara he bought from Cockram Nissan in 2016. Venkataya sought to re- ject the vehicle, complaining it had a vibration through the cabin that made it uncom- fortable for his family to travel in.
