Directory of Services 2019

The Southern Sydney Transition Careers EXPO 2019 for senior students & school leavers with disabilities will be held at the Sharks Leagues Club - on Tuesday 4 June 2019 from 9am until 3.30pm.

This Directory provides information about services for people with disabilities in the area and includes services in neighbouring areas such as St George and Bankstown. Many providers attend the EXPOs, however many other service providers are included in the Directory.

The Department of Education Support Teacher Transition supports schools in the Sutherland local government area to assist students with disabilities in their final years of school with their School to Work Planning. A major part of this program is for the students to prepare for post school and attend this Transition Careers EXPO. The EXPO provides opportunities for the students to access information regarding further education, career and vocational pathways from government, employment, leisure, recreational and respite services. This EXPO also welcomes ex-students and adults in the community who have disabilities and provides opportunities for them to access a broader range of services.

• NDIS – The National Disability Insurance Scheme: www.ndis.gov.au; phone: 1800 800 110 Fact sheets: www.ndis.gov.au/people-disability-fact-sheets-and-publications.html • NDIA – National Disability Insurance Agency.

Below is a definition of the NDIS and NDIA (which has been in place since 1 July 2017).

The NDIS supports people with a permanent and significant disability which affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. Services will assist in identifying supports needed in order to live their lives and help achieve goals including independence, involvement in the community, education, health, employment and well-being. It offers assistance with choices, control, certainty and support. It may also focus on early intervention. The NDIS is a cross jurisdictional reform to be delivered and administered by the NDIA, which is a Commonwealth statutory agency established under the Commonwealth and Companies Act 1997 (CAV Act).

The Department of Education Public Schools NSW, Nova Employment and the EXPO committee have assisted in the production of the Directory 2019 and the presentation of the EXPO.

UNIVERSITIES Every University has a support person available to discuss individual needs of students and assist with planning, goal setting and support. Websites are available with up-to-date information and your NDCO (bottom of this section) can also assist. Practical information, courses, costs, scholarships and resources: www.australianuniversities.com.au then search city or state. Current information including names can be found at http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/disability-contacts.pdf It is recommended that students make contact with this person early, to facilitate a smooth transition to the new learning environment. Everybody has a disability at some time (allergies, diseases, flu) which may impact temporarily or permanently. Students need to address the effect of their disability in order to maximise learning. Benefits may be available such as extra points, your NDCO can also assist with these links.
