The daughter and wife of a botanist, Mrs Hooker was herself an enthusiastic cultivator of the science, to which she made important contributions. Dr Hooker is a brother-in-law of our townsman, the Rev. Dr McGilvray. [Her death was on November 13]

1926 January 2: *Western Morning News REV. GEORGE HENSLOW – EMINENT BOTANIST'S DEATH AT BOURNEMOUTH. The death is announced at his residence at Bournemouth, at the age of 90, of the Rev. George Henslow, the eminent botanist. Mr Henslow had held several clerical and scholastic appointments, and was formerly Professor of Botany to the Royal Horticultural Society. He was author of many Books on botany and allied subjects, and had also published many theological works. He was also identified with the Christian Spiritualist movement.

HENSLOW. – Death at the Residence of Her Daughter. – The death has occurred at 7, Mount Beacon, Bath, the residence of her daughter (Dr Christie), of Mrs Susan Henslow (87), widow of the late Rev. L. R. Henslow, one time Rector of Zeals, Wilts, and daughter of the late Captain T. B. Wall (1 st Foot and 23 rd Light Dragoons), and the Hon. Mrs. Wall. Mrs. Henslow was well known at St John's Church, Bathwick, and Holy Trinity Church. She leaves four sons and six daughters with whom much sympathy will be felt. The funeral takes place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zeals. [Probate Register gives date of death as 1929.12.17]

BARNARD Death In Cheltenham Of Indian Railway Engineer The "Chronicle" regrets to announce the death of Mr. Robert Cary Henslow Barnard, which took place at his home, Rosslyn, Moorend Grove, Cheltenham, on Saturday, in his 75th year. Mr. Barnard was the eldest son of the late Major R. C. Barnard, of Bartlow, Leckhampton Hill. He was articled to the late Mr. Shelford, the railway engineer, in Westminster, and during the time he was pupil was chiefly employed on the Hull and Barnsley Railway. Soon after completing his articles Mr. Barnard went direct to India to take up the post of assistant engineer of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. Afterward became Deputy Chief and hold this position when he retired shortly after the war. During his career in India he was a J.P. for Bombay and also Lieutenant- Colonel of the Ist G. I.P. Volunteers, being rewarded with the V.D. for long service. He was one of the officers in the Indian contingent at the Coronation of King George V., and he commanded the guard of honour when Lord Roberts came to Cheltenham to open the new Drill Hall. On his retirement he came to Cheltenham, first to Bartlow, and then moving to Rosslyn. Mr. Barnard was a prominent Freemason. He was Worshipful Master of the Foundation Lodge, No. 82, and afterwards received provincial honours as Past Provincial Grand Deacon. He was acting as Provincial Steward for this year, and had just completed the raising of a considerable sum for the Girls' School Festival. In India he was a Mark Mason and a founder and past W.M. of the lodge Star of Gwalior. He was a prominent members of the Friends in Council, a literary society founded by his father in 1868. Until last year he was chairman of the Leckhampton Parish Council and the Parish Meeting, retiring from those offices owing to ill-health. For many years he was a member of the Cheltenham Rotary Club. Mr. Barnard is survived by his wife, his son, Capt. T. Barnard (late the Gloucestershire Regiment), and his daughter, Mrs. Hooton, wife of Major Hooton (late the Green Howards). There are three brothers and two sisters, viz., Mrs. [sic] A. S. Barnard, now living in Cirencester, Mr. A. H. Barnard, now in Liverpool, and Mr. L. W. Barnard, architect, of Cheltenham, and Miss H. C. Barnard, of Cheltenham, and Miss C. S. Barnard, of Church Stretton.
