    Conservation architecture and the narrative imperative: Birmingham Back to Backs Introduction In Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose the Venerable Jorge declaims from the pulpit ‘...the work of this monastery ...is the study, and the preservation of knowledge. Preservation, I say, and not search for ... There is no progress, no revolution of ages, in the history of knowledge, but at most a continuous and sublime recapitulation’ (1992: 399). This is, perhaps, an apposite image in the present context. In relation to knowledge a traditional museographical idea of curation is invoked, that of connoisseurship; the process of living with and repeatedly handling a collection, which uncovers a knowledge that is hard won, situated and consequently uniquely valuable. Sadly, in public museums connoisseurship is now rarely affordable. In 2009 Helen Wilkinson, Museums Association Projects Officer, commented on the work that Monument Trust Fellows—retired curators and conservators brought up in the connoisseur tradition—have been doing in their former museums to pass on their knowledge (Wilkinson, 2009: 17). It conjures up the manner of librarian succession in the Name of the Rose. The ironic aspect of this is that the interpretive turn in museum practice, the turn away from a belief in the truth of things, underpins the rationale for the Monument Fellowship. The profession is searching for ways to build future specialists’ knowledge because it sees this as enabling them to better fulfil the diverse roles expected of them in the (post)modern museum. What is not questioned very often is whether this curator-centred perspective on knowledge is always appropriate.

Birmingham Back to Backs are located on a busy street (Hurst Street) in Birmingham city centre, next to the Hippodrome Theatre. The Back to Backs are a series of small Grade II* Listed houses built back to back with a single dividing wall between them, and they enclose a walled courtyard which is accessed via a level alleyway from Inge Street. They are three-storey buildings with a small, furnished room on each floor and steep, winding staircases between each floor, though we operate ground-floor only tours. Space is very limited and it can be quite dark inside. With the exception of George Saunders’s tailor shop, objects are suitable for handling (which is paused during Covid 19 pandemic). 2. Mobile phone reception is good across the site. Visitors are always accompanied by a guide who will welcome them and provide a narrative as they tour the property. 3. There is a level-access toilet with handrails situated within the yard. 4. There is a portable induction loop available in reception. 5. Light levels can be low around the property. Genuine fires, candles and paraffin lamps are lit to evoke an appropriate atmosphere. 6. Whilst we regret that dogs are not permitted on site due to limited open space, assistance dogs are welcome. 7. Due to confined spaces and narrow staircases, large bags will be stored behind reception. 8. We regret that photography is not permitted inside the houses due to light-sensitive objects and out of courtesy to other visitors.

    12 Toilet Facilities Toilets on coaches and trains Coaches, such as those operated on National Express services, all have a washroom and toilet on board. However they are not accessible to wheelchair users. Because a toilet is provided, the service may not make a toilet stop en route. Accessible toilets are being introduced on new trains on long distance routes; you can ask about this facility when you book your ticket. The majority of trains on the Birmingham to Coventry line have wheelchair accessible toilets. Trains used on other local services in the West Midlands have toilets that are suitable for most people but are not wheelchair accessible. However, most accessible local rail stations have accessible toilet facilities. The RADAR scheme There are many places now with accessible toilets in the West Midlands. Many of them are controlled with a key that is operated under the RADAR National Key Scheme (NKS). The NKS offers independent access to disabled people to around 7,000 locked public toilets around the country. It ensures that people who need them can always find a suitable and accessible toilet in a good clean condition. It is the policy of Centro to provide NKS toilets at as many bus stations as possible.     Thursday 13 – Sunday 16 November 2014 About Town is an exhibition of international video art in Birmingham’s Southside district taking place 13 – 16 November 2014. Presented by Hippodrome Plus in partnership with Ikon, About Town showcases a wide variety of free night- screenings by artists from the UK and abroad, in unusual urban spaces. New commissions inspired by their location, alongside pieces from Ikon’s recent programme, will explore everyday city life and reflect on how we shape and are shaped by our surroundings. About Town audiences will intersperse their artistic experiences with short walks through streets brimming with local interest. The Gallan Car Park, Hurst Street will see a combination of large scale installations, transforming it into a vast indoor landscape of moving imagery and ambient sound. Beat Streuli’s New Street (2013) will display projected sequences of photographic stills across three large screens, capturing the summer atmosphere of Birmingham’s streets. Gillian Wearing’s Broad Street (2000) focuses its attention on Birmingham’s frenetic night-life. Oliver Beer’s film Pay and Display (2011) documents his collaboration with the city’s Ex Cathedra choir to create an experimental music video shot in a stairwell in the Pershore Street Carpark. Birmingham Hippodrome will host a number of works in its foyer areas, on staircases and landings. Adel Abdessemed’s Happiness in Mitte (2003) depicts stray cats drinking, one by one, from bowls of milk left by the artist outdoors in Berlin’s Mitte district. In Hiccup #2 (2006) Canadian artist Kelly Mark documents a five day performance on the steps of the old Birmingham Library, repeating the same routine of simple actions while other people, undirected by her, are busy being otherwise occupied.
