PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the club members, committee, coaches, managers and parents for making this a most enjoyable season for me at Redbacks this year. It was my first season as President and I can honestly say what a great honour it has been to take over the running of this club from Gary Freeland.

Gary did a great job with our club and was on the committee for at least 20 years. I would like to thank him too for his guidance and assistance during the season.

Running a club like Redbacks takes a fair amount of work, but if it is spread out over many volunteers it is not such a daunting task. There are a lot of small tasks performed each week that go unnoticed, like putting out the garbage bins (Gary Freeland), marking the fields (Terry Skinner), keeping out website updated (Theo Dimarchos) and banking the cash each week (Kim Doyle). I would like to personally thank these people.

They say that behind every great leader is a good woman and for me that is my Secretary Liz Spink. I am spoilt to have such a great helper. Liz has been great this season, looking after all our paperwork and organising all the trophies this year.

Our Treasurer, Andy Crawford, has been busy behind the scenes ensuring all our bills are paid and bank accounts reconciled. I can always rely on Andy and have been lucky to have him as part of my executive committee.

My Vice President, Nikki Durant has been busy this year bringing in more sponsors such as Wetlands Oysters and has spent hours in the gear room trying to repair our sponsor’s banners and tear drop flags!

I would also like to thank other committee members who regularly give up their time to assist at the club (Harry Symes, Steve Smith, Steve Loxley, Dave Chernich and Howard Fox). A special thanks to Howard as he doesn’t even have any children playing at the club but still gives up his time to help us out.

Redbacks is a family friendly club and I pride myself on knowing most of our Club members and families personally. We are all part of the local community and the club provides a safe, fun environment to help this grow stronger each year. I am very proud of our club and what we offer the local community.

This season we had 520 players register with the club. I am very pleased to say that once again we had large numbers of mini-roo players (239). Almost half these were girls too (105). Our club is made up mostly of junior players, 74% of our players are 18 or under. This sets us up for a very good future.

We were also very well represented by our competition teams this year, especially the juniors:

Congratulations to all the teams that made it through to the finals and well done to our Grand Final winners this year. I was very pleased to see the W12C girls win the Grand Final at their first attempt.

In summary, our junior club was very strong and competitive this year. We only had 2 junior teams miss out on the finals. Our 15A’s were close but still had a great season and congratulations to our 18E team that was pulled together at the last minute and had a great season too but missed out on reaching the finals.

Finally, I would like to make a special mention to Giulio Di Stefano for all his hard work this year at our club. He arranges the mini-roo referees each week and played a big part this year in organising Bruce Tilt for the mini-roo training. He also helped me to implement the new FDO training provided by the SSFA this season. Thanks to Steve Brown and his assistants for their hard work each Wednesday night. I am sure Steve Brown and the FDO training has contributed to the success of the junior club this year.

Once again a big thank you to everyone involved in helping me make this another very successful season for the mighty Redbacks. I hope to see you all again in 2018.

Your President

Andy Neudegg

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Well, another successful year completed by the Caringbah Redbacks. Congratulations to all our players, coaches, managers, supporters and volunteers, your efforts on and off the field are to be commended.

We welcomed new sponsors to the club this year thanks to the awesome efforts of Nikki Durant. Please support these businesses as they support our club each week. Great job Nikki.

Giulio Di Stefano again did a wonderful job organising our mini roo referees and the field layouts each week. Thank you very much Giulio. To the Committee Duty team, congratulations on a job well done with the on-time running of the games each Saturday.

To the Age Controllers a huge thank you for your hard work this season which makes my job so much easier.

Our Facebook page has plenty of followers and it’s great to see the mini-roos and other teams in action each week.

Many thanks again this year to Harry and Jackie in the canteen and also our newest recruit, Claudia Trotter. You do a fantastic job each week, well done.

To the Committee a massive thank you to each and every one of you for your efforts this year. Many hands make light work and it’s great to see everyone pitching in and getting things done.

See you all next year!!

Liz Spink Secretary

REGISTRAR’S REPORT

We had another very successful year at the Redbacks. This was my 5th year as Registrar and the whole registration process was very smooth mainly due to the excellent help I had from other committee members and the My Football Club Registration system.

I would like to say a big thank you to my assistant Registrar, Liz Spink for her help through the busy registration process. Also, I would like to recognise the hard work of Andy Crawford for his help in tracking the Registration payments. I would also like to thank other committee members that gave up their time to assist with the registration process.

We are now 6 years into using the new on-line system. This year we had minimal issues with the on-line system although that is mainly due to knowing how to operate it well rather than it being a good system. Hopefully next year the SSFA will have a new system for us to use which will make the process a lot easier. Especially uploading player photographs. This year we had 247 players register on-line out of 520 players. That’s 52% which is up on last year (43%).

Our registration numbers were slightly down on last year at 520. We had 537 registered players last year. We only had 1 Senior Women’s team this year and a W30’s but did manage to field 2 over 35 men’s teams. We did however lose our U21 boys team as we just couldn’t get the numbers. We are hopeful the U21s will come back to Redbacks next year. We also lost our Over 45 men’s team as most of the team retired.

We were slightly down on last year when we had 537 players registered. I am pleased to say though that two thirds of our club (63%) is made up of Mini-roos players under the age of 11. In fact, 74% of all our registrations were for junior members. It is also important to note that junior soccer for girls is still very strong. This year out of 239 mini-roo registrations, 105 were for girls (44%).

I have listed below some further registration statistics that have been downloaded from the on- line system.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 9 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

Total Registrations 520 Mini Roos (5-11) 239 46% Youth (12-18) 146 28% Senior (19+) 135 25% Male 325 63% Female 195 36%

Total Teams 49 SFF (5-11) 31 63% Youth (12-18) 10 20% Senior (19+) 8 16%

From the 1st January 2018, the on-line registration system will be available once again. I would encourage all returning players to register this way and pay via credit card or direct deposit. Only players paying by cash will need to come up to the club AFTER they have completed their registration on line.

Thanks to everyone on the committee and club members for their support and assistance in 2017. Let’s hope we can increase our registration numbers for next year and bring all our players back for more fun in 2018.

Your Registrar, Andy Neudegg

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT

“The secret is to believe in your dreams; in your potential that you can be like your star, keep searching, keep believing and don’t lose faith in yourself”.

Well another fantastic year for the mighty Redbacks.

Our competition teams excelled once again in 2017!!

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our teams that made it through to the finals this year. This year saw 4 of our teams go through as Grand Finalists, with three of our four teams winning their Grand Finals. A great effort by all involved as you have done yourselves and the club very proud.

A big congratulations goes out to our Grand Final winners this year:

W12C W14C AL 6 And well done to our 18D’s who were Minor Premiers & Runners Up.

Our 12Cs, 13Cs, W16Bs & AL 14s were all semi finalists whilst our 14Cs made it through to their final. And further congratulations to our W16Bs for winning the Associations Most Improved Award for their grade.

In 2007, the Redbacks made a decision to utilise the services of Bruce Tilt and his International Football Group (IFG) to help run our MiniRoos program. Thanks to Bruce’s specialised training program our players have continued to improve their skills, which are reflected in our achievements by our younger teams. Our Friday night training this season went smoothly except for a couple of interruptions from wet weather.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 13 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

However, on those dry nights it was magnificent to see all our young kids and their coaches and managers enjoying the training sessions. A big thank you to all the mums and dads for their help during the season for getting the boys and girls to training on those cold Friday nights each and every week and also getting them ready on game day. A great team effort by all this season.

The Association introduced a new program for both players and coaches in 2017 in which the Redbacks were successful participants. We were very lucky to secure Steve Brown as Football Development Officer. After a shaky start at the beginning of the season with rain, the program was very successful with our junior competition teams learning many new techniques and skills under Steve, Emily and Jak’s guidance. We will continue to be part of this again in 2018.

In closing, I would like to say a big thank you to all the Redbacks Committee members this year for their continued support and assistance in the running of the Caringbah Redbacks club.

And finally, a big thanks to all the mums, dads, players, coaches and managers for their assistance and helping the club when needed needed.

See you all again in the Red & Black in 2018.

W6A

What a fantastic first year for the W6A's, the effort every week the girls put in was exceptional and the friendships formed was beautiful to watch.

The girls loved to have a chat on the field and off but their skills kept improving every week. Friday training and Saturday game day very quickly became their favourite time of the week being able to play soccer with their friends.

We were very lucky to have such a great group of supportive parents and grandparents turning up every week to watch and cheer the girls on.

Coach - We could not have asked for a better coach, patient, supportive and encouraging to all the girls Christian (Tubby), you made the season for the girls thank you for all your time and effort we all appreciate it.

Looking forward to next year's soccer season 2018 with Redbacks.

6B/1

A tremendous season was had by Marcus, Ethan, Charlie, Jack and Zane who made up the Caringbah Redbacks 6B1. The team came together and formed such a solid combination, working hard during games and training to continue to learn and develop their football skills. As they focused hard on their dribbling, passing and shooting, it was clear as the season progressed that these skills showed great improvement as did their passion for the game. The boys were enthusiastic and displayed a real joy in competing weekly, showing great support for each other and riding the highs and lows of sport with a smile.

Many thanks to Tracey for coaching the squad and for the parents and grandparents who supported the boys so well throughout the season.

Go Redbacks!!!

6B/2

Determined that is the best word to describe the 6B2 boys. Starting the season with 5 boys and losing the big boot of Andy to an interstate move, we missed him dearly. No matter what, if the boys only had three players or four they took the field and all tried their hardest, coming away with a lot of wins. I think the boys’ competitive nature was growing with every game but still most importantly had the ability to have a lot of fun. On one occasion one of the boys decided to jump on another one for a horse ride which was very entertaining in the middle of the game. They all loved to celebrate any goals that any of them scored and patted each other on the back, learning the key fundaments of being part of a team. The skills the boys had by the end of the season was amazing, this comes down to the fantastic coaching by Ryan. Thank you for all your effort, time and guidance with the boys we all appreciate it.

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents for helping and supporting the boys on those very early morning starts. I think the boys all had a great year and I hope there are many more years of soccer together.

Looking forward to next year's soccer season 2018 Redbacks.

W6B

The W6B girls had a great 2017 season with Redbacks.

The girls should be very proud of themselves with most being their first season on the field.

Savannah and Summer were our great goal scorers of the season. Often dribbling the ball from one end of the field to the other and scoring.

Sienna and Georgia always trying their best and trying to get the ball from the defence as much as possible.

Lahni and Samara always loving a chat on field and trying their best to assist the other girls getting goals.

We are very proud of how the girls’ skills have grown throughout the 2017 season. Next year I am sure they will take all they have learnt this year and come back even stronger.

A big thank you to Coach Rod and to the parents that helped out on occasion with subbing the girls on and off.

A great first season for these six little ladies.

6F

Fabulous effort by the U6F team. All first timers at the sport and with the unfortunate withdrawal of team member Sebastian early on in the season due to injury, the boys did really well to pick up the slack and play their hearts out! Thanks to Coach Ben who got our boys from chasing the ball, to kicking the ball and beyond! By the end, we were proud to see them, passing and helping each other out even scored a few goals on the way! Daniel, you're going to be a great goalie, Wyatt the team all rounder kept our spirits high and Lachlan you have a boot on you kid! Jack and Nathaniel, both did their bit and rounded out our great team! We are all so proud of you boys well done! Go Redbacks!!

U7A

What a great group of little soccer stars the 7a's became this year. Every boy brought a different quality to the team and they came together to produce a successful combination.

A few words to reward each of them;

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 27 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

- Josh a born leader who scored some great goals - Leo the enforcer who will be missed next year - Huxley with the passion and the tackling skills - Elijah who was always there in support and most focused at training - Will the soccer newcomer with his big kicks and improved every week.

So proud of them all, can't wait to see them on the bigger field next year. Thanks to Bianca for being manager and all the parents and grandparents for showing up and supporting when they could.

It was rewarding to coach them.

Thanks, Brett

W7B

The W07B team had a fantastic 2017 season. Having lots of laughter and fun throughout this season. The Team won 10 matches had 2 draws, 4 losses and 2 wash out games. It was fantastic to watch the girls’ confidence and skills grow each week, as they put their new skills from training to good use. The girls always congratulated each other after every goal scored. Holly and Bianca were the highest goal scorers, with Tilly, Olivia, Koda and Isla not far behind.

All the girls played together really well, building on their great friendships along the way. The girls benefitted significantly from the great weekly coaching skills of Grant. He had them excited about playing soccer from their first training session of the 2017 season. Thanks Grant for your dedication and commitment each week. Also, I would like to thank Craig Sims for stepping in on game days to coach the girls, when Grant was unavailable. A special mention to the parents and grandparents who turned up each week to cheer on our team, you all helped make this season fun and enjoyable. All of the girls had a blast, and we hope to see them all back for another great season next year.

Cheers Steve Team-Manager

W7C

The W7C's had a great season! From the start all the players were very keen to improve their skills and play as a team. Every week they became more and more confident and put into practice the skills taught to them by Coach Glen. We started the season off as the W7D’s and got regraded to the W7C’s.

Alisha is a great team player, always keeping on top of the ball.

Bawantha is our natural defence player and did a great job winning the ball back from our opponents. Halle picked up all the skills taught in training and put them to use. She is a great all rounder on the field.

Cara is full of determination and would keep on fighting for the ball and persist to score a goal. Olivia is our other great allrounder. Quick on the ball and very determined.

The girls had so much fun and are looking forward to next season! Thank you to all the parents and family members that made sure the girls got to training and matches and for the great support.

11A

This season our 11A boys had an enjoyable season and we were able to watch them progress as a quality side in the top division. Coach Richard really focused on our skill levels and passing game and a well organised defence.

We only had one disappointing match earlier in the season against Miranda and from that match we played some great football. The boys learnt so much from that loss on how to improve their game. We bounced back and particularly in defence which was one of our strengths this season.

We are very fortunate to have two quality keepers in Tommy and Cruze. They were reliable, made some fine saves and showed they are some of the best keepers in this competition. They also played well out on the field mainly in midfield and creating opportunities for our strikers.

Archie was superb in the centre of defence and well supported by Jake and Lincoln. James was a strong consistent performer each week at right back.

In midfield Daniel and Bailey worked extremely hard each week driving our attack through the middle. Connor showed great skills on the ball and scored two sensational goals in our victory against Bosco. Ian alternated between defender and striker and was solid each week creating chances for his teammates and scored a fine goal in the win against Georges River. Our striker Jamie is a superb finisher and scores with great power from long range. Well done on the many goals you scored and particularly the winner away to Engadine.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 29 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

We are as skilled as any team in the competition and we just need to be the fittest team out there. If each player can work hard in the off season on their pace and fitness as we will be playing full field in the U12 next season.

Many thanks to coach Richard who has put so much time into the team and he mentioned he has aspirations to coach his daughters team down the track. Thanks mate as you have coached the team for the last 4 years and have done an outstanding job. Thanks also to manager Nicki who always organises the team well given she has to also juggle this role, her family life and part time job.

W12C

This game had everything a Grand Final should have. Excitement, guts, dominance, strong defence, aggressive attack and most importantly respect and support for each other. We had each other's backs. The belief in ourselves that we could win this game and that we deserved it was evident, we all had that important self-belief.

Finishing the season as Minor Premiers was a well deserved pat on the back for us. Last year's two Under 11's team merged and made a strong U12 team and from the first game it was clear our team had an exciting season ahead of us.

With 13 wins, 3 draws and only 1 loss for the season, the Minor Premiership was ours. What an achievement! We were so proud that by season end, we had scored 42 goals and only 5 goals were scored against us! But we didn't get too ahead of ourselves.... there was still a job to be done....

Semi-finals was all new to us, with this season being our first year playing competition. We faced Menai Hawks in the first semi-final, we knew this would be a tough game. But there were nerves, it was such an important game that if we win this, we go straight to the Grand Final. But, those nerves were too strong and we didn't play like we usually did. They scored 2 goals against us, no team had done that to us in one game this season. We lost that game. Menai were through to the Grand Final. We felt that loss.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 30 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

We went into the 2nd semi-final against Cronulla Seagulls and played our usual strong game. The nerves were probably there but this time we knew how to handle it. Nil all even after extra time, we go straight through to the final. The Grand Final was ours to take.

Grand Final morning, Kirrawee Oval, bright and sunny, the positivity, the belief, the excitement, all signs pointing in the right direction. We had so many family and friends come and support us! We had nothing to lose, we were going to give it everything we had, we weren't going to hand anything to Menai this time. They would have to fight for it.

The game we played was Grand Final quality. It was exciting from start to finish. We felt strong and every single one of us dug deep. We all lifted, we all played quality football. Both teams defence was rock solid, no one could get through. We had more possession but Menai's defence just wouldn't budge. But something had to give. We were in their half and with some quality passing Frankie slotted the first goal. 1 Nil. The park erupted!!!

The first goal was an important one, we needed to keep this lead. Our attack was strong and we faced strong opposition from Menai, they weren't going to go easy on us. We fought for every pass, kick and our ball control was first class.

Then we broke through again, Shadae weaved through the opposition and smashed the ball in. 2 Nil.

It was almost half time and we needed to keep the lead, strong defence by Lauren, Sarah, Maddie, Gemma, Isabella, Jade, and Hannah was outstanding. Menai were kept away from our goal line.

Half Time. Positive vibes all around. Everything was going our way. Coach Ben had us focused and his positive words kept our minds on the job.

Second half was underway, Menai weren't ready to give up, they were just as strong as they were in the first half.

We got close to their line again, our determined forwards and midfielders Cloe, Daniella, Frankie, Piper, Shadae, Chloe, Lily, Jayla, and Katelyn fought their way through but once again, Menai blocked us. But the mood was changing, as the minutes ticked closer to full time, we grew stronger and Menai were becoming disheartened. But still, anything is possible, we needed to seal this game once and for all.

A beautiful pass from Daniella to Frankie got through Menai's defence and Frankie's big boot found the back of the net. The job was done. With minutes to go, the mood was full of excitement! And then...... FULL TIME!

WE. DID. IT. All that hard work, all those months of training on cold, windy nights and those tough early morning games. I think it's fair to say, we saved the best game for last!

We had so much support from parents, family and friends. Thank you! Your support meant everything.

Michelle, even though you could not play because of an injury, you helped us get to the Grand Final and you being here today to support us lifted our spirits. Lots of hugs to you and thank you!

A new Redbacks side rises from the ashes! Thanks to a few special people, namely Jill, Alison, Cameron and Andy. Thank you very much. It was a most worthwhile drama riddled two/three week period to bring a team together. Lots of new boys from around the shire came under the Redbacks banner which is always a good thing to see. They slotted in seamlessly. It was made all the more painless with Stuart, in my opinion, the greatest manager ever – always very organized and nothing was ever a hassle. Thanks Mate.

On to the season: a great gelling of new boys keen to train and learn and listen. Well done boys for behaving and enjoying your training. It makes everything easier and as you saw teamwork is always better than individual players.

We had a very successful season, ending up second on the table, which at the start of the year seemed a long way off. A real credit to all the boys. So well done boys. Catch you next season. Stay healthy.

W14D

Some call this side the most social side in the whole of the Redbacks Club. Others would say, surely this side is the one that has the most fun every training session and every game day. Some say that this is one of the best bunch of girls you can meet on the soccer field who play hard, play fairly and of course, have a laugh as they go about their business. Yet, others would say, do they really talk that much and still win games all season???? – yes – we only lost 2 games all season!

All of the above statements are indeed true (the rumour that coach Andy needed to chat to his therapist after each training session and game are not true ….. supposedly).

About half of this side have now been playing together for 3-4 years and most of the side have been together throughout their two years of full sized field competition; and so we welcomed back most of our other legends of the W12B side for the “big step up” in the W14D league.

Our mighty W14D’s are indeed an U13 side, yet we gave the teams of Menai, Lilli Pilli and Bundeena a run for their money, pretty much teams with the bulk of their players in the 2nd year of W14 competition.

At season end, we finished an agonising 3rd and nothing really separated the top four teams all season. After beating Bundeena 1-0- in the Semi we then moved onto the Preliminary Final v Lilli Pilli, against whom we had won and drawn previously. After a nail biting extra time period, the scores remained nil all and we went out on overall points difference only. So close to our first Grand Final – there will be 2018!! Look out.

A bit about the team:

We welcomed Charlotte, our UK import, - well - her Dad’s influence there anyway and what a star she was in the mids and up-front. A great addition to the team.

We had the Managers’ favourite twins (ie their dad), Tara and Lauren, one up front, one down the back holding the fort. Two different styles. Two great team players. Two kids I could yell loudest at …..

We had our star striker Liv, a goal scorer extraordinaire, who came back in the finals and risked losing her leg after three weeks out with a nasty crocodile bite (ok – it was a badly sprained ankle but you get the drift. We needed her back). Such a great asset for the team.

Surely, we also had one of the fastest players after Usain Bolt (if he did play soccer) with Lucia. No one could keep up with her and at times I’m sure the grass was on fire from her footy boots as she ran at light speed.

We had Annabelle, a legend in goals. The kid’s a star and when we let her out on the field (occasionally…) she is a big time mid field player … but we just like her in goals too much. Thanks Annabelle for all the hard work in stopping the goals all season.

In the mids we had Ruby. One of the hardest running girls in the team who was just simply everywhere this season. Her throw ins have to be seen to be believed. Her kicking strength keeps getting stronger. A real clutch and go-to player for the team.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 33 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

Also in the mids we had the Pocket Rocket. Don’t let her size, or animal noise impersonations fool you. She is a fighter with lightning speed. Sometimes we thought we had three Elle’s on the field at the same time. So fast.

Rounding out the mids we had Lana. Lana was in the “doughnut” all season. Covering the gap/hole between our defence and the upfront transition space. So effective in making sure no one got past her.

Up back we had Ellie in the centre with Gia holding hands with her (I’m sure I saw this numerous times – they are that close … or was it the team strategy meetings held on pitch). Anyway nothing got past these two down the middle of the field. So effective in defence and even pushing up for the corners in attack when required. Gia scored a legend goal as well. We will miss you Ellie next year as you head up to W16s.

And last but not least, is the best header of the ball in the team. The Fergo/Emma, was never afraid to commit body or head to the fight for the ball. Often winning us the ball in the air before the other team knew what was happening.

All in all, the most rewarding season for all involved and I hope to see all of the team back next year for the W14 comp.

"You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it."

A very mixed season for the Redback W16s both on and off the field.

After a slow start where we had 4 straight losses, we showed the Redbacks fighting spirit where through some great skill and determination we made the finals for the 5th straight season.

This was recognised by the Association in awarding the girls their Most Improved Award for 2017. Congratulations to faithful girls who turned up for training every week. Commitment is one of your best characters.

Also, a big thank you to Trent, my reliable assistant, and no team can function without great managerial skills - so thank you to Esther and Mick. And our supporters each week. Your cheering noise and positive attitude makes a very important difference. Hope to see all the girls back next year and hopefully that elusive gold medal.

18D

This was a great year for the boys, finishing the season as well-deserved Minor Premiers, going all the way to the Grand Final, but just missing out on the win (….again).

Scoring 73 goals and conceding only 15, we out-scored and out-defended the rest of the comp, losing only 2 games all season. But with one player out, 2 sick players and a constant flow of injuries in the GF we just couldn’t get over the line.

We lost a few players from 2016, but recruited brilliantly – a big welcome and thankyou to Josh G, Nathan, Steven, Dimi, Zane and Jake PY.

Ben Skinner – the fastest player in the competition, Ben scored 15 goals and was always a threat up front. Ben couldn’t have tried any harder, and in spite of getting a tooth knocked out in Rd 8 he was always keen to get amongst the action. Love your work, Ben.

Taine Claringold – Taine had his best season this year, knocking in 5 goals. A talented winger who didn’t mind (much) helping out in the backs where he proved his toughness each week. Injury kept him out of the Grand Final where he was sorely missed. Great season, Taine.

Ronan Hingerty – each and every game Ronan would amaze the crowd with his skills, and scored more goals at training than anyone. A great attacking fullback, Ronan defended his butt off and never gave up the ball without a fight. Thanks for the season, Ronan.

Matt Stuart – Matt scored some absolutely cracking goals this year (6 for the season), including the goal of the year in our Semi Final and another beauty in the Grand Final. Always vocal, always wanting to get involved, Matt’s passion was infectious. Another great season Matt.

Nathan Dong – Nathan made the centre midfield his home early in the season and the team never looked back. Injured early in the Grand Final, we really missed his skill and composure. Fantastic ball skills and great vision, Nathan had an outstanding year, scoring 7 goals. Thanks Nathan.

Josh Eagle – Josh had his best season EVER, playing all over the park when needed. Rock solid in defence and a real weapon in attack (2 goals), Josh’s ability and willingness to play anywhere was such an asset to the team. Probably the player of the year. Congratulations on a fantastic season, Josh.

Zane Murphy – great ball skills, good positional play and a natural competitor, Zane was a welcome addition to our team. Zane scored 6 goals this year and would happily play in any position required. Zane also played a full game in the Grand Final with a broken toe! Thanks for the banter and the efforts this season, Zane.

Steven Jones– another player who shone no matter where he was playing. Fullback, Wing, Midfield – Steven scored from them all. A total weapon, explosive speed and amazing ball control saw him blitz oppositions all year, and score 7 goals. Thanks, Steven.

Jake Petit-Young – a crowd favourite, PY was nearly unstoppable on the left wing. With his trademark in-and-away and his left foot “wand”, Jake scored 7 goals and laid on plenty. Gave 100% every minute

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 36 CARINGBAH REDBACKS FOOTBALL CLUB INC

of every game and probably would have given more if he could. I certainly couldn’t ask for any more – thanks, PY.

Josh Bode – Josh played his usual awesome season of soccer again this year. Playing on through injuries and illnesses, Josh makes the team stronger whenever he is on the field. A joy to have in the team – thanks SO much, Josh.

Joe Newcombe – Joe had a great year, making the right midfield position his own and scoring 2 goals. One of the hardest trainers, and always ready to contribute, Joe’s intensity on the field is such a positive influence on the team – great season again, Joe.

Dimantha Ekanayake – I have loved having Dimi in the team this year – always so positive and very popular in the team. Another player who never stops during a game, and really threatened each time he got the ball on the right wing. Scored 7 goals and had a great year. Nice one, Dimi.

Alex Clarke – Alby was team captain this year and led the team beautifully from the back. He was always there to clean up loose balls and his free kicks this year were sublime. Not to mention his headers from corners! 7 goals scored is an awesome effort from our Centre Back. A great season from a passionate team player – congratulations Alby.

Tom Moss – Tom had a great season right up until the moment in the 5th minute of the first game when he suffered a season-ending injury. Poor Tom – we missed you as much as you missed playing. See you next year, Milk.

(Sub) Ben Jones – Big Ben from the 18E’s came and helped out the last few games, including our finals campaign, and fitted in immediately. Thanks for your effort, Ben, you were great!

Josh Gregerson – Our gifted Goalie this year won us more than a few games with his performances. The boys always had supreme confidence in his abilities and it truly was well deserved. Such sure hands and perfect positioning – what a season! Loved having you with us, Josh, legend goalie.

A special mention to the boys who never really got to play in the same position each week, and who often got moved to several positions during the game – sometimes due to injuries, sometimes due to “coaching” plans. To Josh E, Steven, Taine, Dimi and Zane – your patience with me has been much appreciated.

A big thanks to David and Terry who came along each training to help out – I was really glad of the support. And another HUGE thanks to Paul Eagle for being such a wonderful manager and especially for the entertaining weekly texts that the boys and parents all looked forward to.

A fantastic season capped off with the Minor Premiership and a Grand Final (appearance). The boys all got along so well and played with so much passion each week. I know how proud all the parents were of the way the boys conducted themselves on the field each week, sometimes under VERY trying circumstances. There is a lot of character in this team.

I had a ball, and I thank you all for the season.

AL14

2017 has been a mixed bag for the AL14 Caringbah Redbacks, coming off such a high in 2016 as both Minor Premiers and Premiers, we were then moved up to the AL15 bracket.

The boys started the season on absolute fire, beating North Sutherland 13 nil and then followed that up with an 18-2 demolition of our AL16 fellow grand finalists, Menai, all in the space of the first 4 weeks.

So, we were fully aware we were going to be regraded one more time and jumped up to the AL14’s. Our first game in the newly minted grade was a trip to good old Barden Ridge, we did come away winners 3- 2 on that day but it definitely opened our eyes up to the new grade and realise how hard the new grade will be.

I think I’m not alone at all when I say the humbling moment of our season, which kind of brought the boys back into reality was the 7-0 drubbing that was handed to us by the eventual champions, Miranda Magpies, quicker and a lot fitter and definitely set the benchmark for the season and made us as a group re-evaluate what we wanted from this season.

Considering it was our first year in the 14’s we definitely gave it our all this year. I was very proud of the boys, they all rose when needed especially in the 1-1 draw with the Magpies at Caringbah to keep our season alive, and then the last game of the season drawing with Lilli Pilli 3-3 to force a finals berth, we eventually crashed out first week of the finals but it will only make us hungrier for the 2018 season.

2017 had its fair share of moments – we welcomed back our Brazilian maestro, David Neto after a 9 month ACL injury, we lost 2 valuable members of our team in Peter Wagstaff and Jimmy Palamara but welcomed 3 fresh new faces into our little family in Alex Hinson, Jared Hilliers and Jayson De Oliveria.

Our magical No 6, Davey Wagstaff continued his prolific form in front of goal slotting away a career high 24 with a few special set piece wonder goals.

Lastly, but not least our Players’ Player of the Year to our very own (Chrissy Baby) Chris Hook who was so consistent all season and at times was in 4-5 different places at once, the only thing that at times stopped him was Renee saying “it’s time to come off” more than roughly around the 65-70 minute mark.

To say this season was amazing is an understatement and I can’t wait to see what 2018 brings.

SWA

This was not the season any of us had signed up for. To be elevated to ‘A’ grade having finished fourth in 2016 was a surprise to say the least. Much has been made of the decision to promote all four finalist teams from last year and it has continued to be a constant source of debate throughout the season. We, the team have had our say and in summary, were not happy. However, it is a mark of these strong women that they acquitted themselves well constantly with their never say die attitude.

Our players this season were; Tiarne in goal, Rachael T skipper and sweeper, Jess stopper, Loz, Rachael P, Claire, Michelle in the backs, Sarah, Ellie, Paddy, Jaime and Kit in the halves and Lauren, Teagan and Pez up front. There was some shuffling of these positions, Michelle played in the halves for example and Pez played in goal and there were other variations. Andy Crawford and Mark Testi were manager and coach respectively.

Squad numbers suffered due to players pulling out once they knew they would be playing ‘A’ grade football. This lead to us always struggling for numbers throughout the season with injuries, overseas absences, marriages and the occasional mystery Sunday morning headache which appeared to be doing the rounds! Borrowing occasionally from the over 30s team who came to our rescue on several occasions was a bonus and I don’t know where we would have been without their help.

The season had a similar feel to it throughout. The bottom four would play each other in reasonably competitive circumstances and the top half would do pretty much the same. Proof if proof were needed that the experiment of promoting four teams had failed. Close games between Redbacks and Eagles in the Steve Spink Memorial Trophy were no surprise. Unfortunately, Redbacks went down in similar circumstances; one nil at Engadine in a very close match and two one at Caringbah after we had led with ten players having started with only six. A long range lob by Lauren Bates giving us the lead in the first half was memorable. It was only with fifteen minutes to spare that Eagles equalised and then went on to win. These are always tight matches and with a full squad on the day, I am sure this match would have had a different end. In the end though, it was the game that was the winner. It is a privilege that we can celebrate Steve in these fixtures in what has become a tradition. Long may it continue. Another notable match was Menai who went down five nil to Redbacks with all five goals scored by Teagan who was on fire that day. It wasn’t long after that result that Menai went back down to ‘B’ grade which again, given that no team came up, calls into question the structure of this years ‘A’ grade competition. In the end we finished sixth out of seven teams, not where we wanted to be, but given the circumstances, a great effort by the team and as always, manager and coach were proud of what the team achieved.

In terms of end of season accolades; Maeve-Anne (Paddy) was player’s player of the season, Teagan Smith won the golden boot for most goals scored and goal of the season was a tie with Lauren Bates’ lob and Paddy’s free-kick versus Gymea (last game of the season). That free-kick was sublime, no keeper was getting that. Well done to the recipients. For the team as a whole though, your effort was massive and as always a pleasure to watch and be part of. As for next year, definitely no ‘A’ grade football for me! But whatever you decide to do, good luck and best wishes to you all.

Steve Spink Memorial Trophy Games

W30A

Well Ladies after a successful year in B Grade 2016 (Runners Up) the powers that be promoted us to the top grade for 2017. I know I was hoping for a lot of rain this season but it wasn't meant to be, so our journey began and not in a good way.

We knew we were in trouble when arriving for our 1st game against St Pats they were warming up and doing drills and we were just chatting and talking about our end of season trip hence the 14-1 loss. At the end of the game one of our new signings Jodie S said it's ok ladies we will only get better and we laughed and laughed (that was you & I Jodie M).

As the weeks went by we did improve in that we weren't losing by as much not another double figure loss again so we were winning in our eyes. Another funny story I will tell you all about is this: In one of our games we were standing out in the middle of the pitch listening to the Ref giving us his instructions when Deb our Coach yells from the sideline, “Can I have the TRAINING BALL please!” and we all looked at each other and we weren't quite sure what she meant and then we laughed once again. But every week we turned up for each other and each player always gave 100% and then some more and we never gave up.

The girls chased down every ball in attack & defence even if it meant at times running over the top of opposition players in the process. Some of the team's we played were lucky to get away with a win as we helped them out with a few own goals and as the goalie can I say they were bloody good ones. We also managed to score a few in the back of the right net and we all went up as one and celebrated like there was no tomorrow - happy dances all round.

And finally after 1,260 minutes (Rd 14) we had our 1st points on the board with a draw and then we had a WIN in Rd 17 and then another draw in Rd 18 and we were all thinking could it happen could we do a Steve Bradbury but sadly no, the wooden spoon was ours.

I believe that this team I play behind is, as I have said before, is not a champion team but a team of champions. And as we say goodbye to A grade and thanks for having us we are looking forward to 2018 and watch out B grade the Redback Ladies are coming to get you. Last but not least we need to thank 3 very important ladies, 1st is our Coach Deb who has guided us each week with her game plans and tactics and knowhow and the most important job of all organising our end of season trip. 2nd is my Mum Barb who is our No 1 supporter and our orange jacket wearing lady who turned up to every game even when I didn't play. 3rd is Lyndsey our motivational guru who is always yelling encouragement from the sideline that can be heard all over the Shire. We couldn't have done it without you guys being there for us so thank you once again. So signing off now but watch this space bigger & better things to come from this bunch of WINNERS.
