In Thailand itself, the party has become so well- entrenched that it will be a difficult task removing it from office. 2 ISSUE: 2021 No. -

In this connection, we would like to bring to the attention of your Excellency’s Government information we have received concerning the alleged abduction and disappearance in Cambodia of Mr. Wanchalearm Satsaksit, a Thai political activist. Mr. Wanchalearm Satsaksit, 37 years old, is a Thai political activist affiliated with the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), also known as the “Red Shirts”. He has been living in self-imposed exile in Cambodia from 2014 until the time of his reported disappearance. He previously worked as a campaigner for a former Minister from Pheu Thai Party. Prior to his political activism, he worked on HIV/AIDS, including with the Youth Network on HIV/AIDS and the Asian Resource Foundation. According to the information received: Following the May 2014 military coup in Thailand, Mr. Satsaksit was ordered to report to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the military council that had been set up. -

Thailand Calls for Enhancing Connectivity between India and ASEAN (30/12/2011) Thailand has called for enhancing connectivity between India and ASEAN and it sees ASEAN-India relations as a significant factor leading to peace, stability, and dynamism in the rise of the greater East Asia region. Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul expressed Thailands appreciation for Indias commitment to forging closer links with ASEAN and East Asia during the past 20 years, which is a vital component of Indias "Look East policy. He touched on the issue in his statement at the Sixth Meeting of the ThailandIndia Joint Commission, held in New Delhi on 27 December 2011. The meeting discussed many issues concerning economy, culture, tourism, security and defense, science and technology, and natural resources and environmental management. Regarding connectivity issues, both countries discussed cooperation on the construction of the Trilateral Highway project linking India, Myanmar, and Thailand and on the linking of Dawei Deep Sea Port in Myanmar to ports along the Bay of Bengal, Chennai, and the Pak Bara Deep Sea Port project in Thailand's southern province of Satun. Foreign Minister Surapong said that Thailand and India should work together to enhance connectivity through bilateral and regional undertakings, such as the Trilateral Highway project and the expanded economic corridor by way of a sea link from the port of Dawei to South Asia. He cited the expanding of Thai-Indian relations as a central part of Thailands "Look West policy. According to his statement, bilateral trade between the two countries has grown from 4.7 billion US dollars in 2007 to 6.7 billion dollars in 2010. -
A Simultaneous-Equation Model of the Determinants of the Thai Baht/U.S
A SIMULTANEOUS-EQUATION MODEL OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE THAI BAHT/U.S. DOLLAR EXCHANGE RATE Yu Hsing, Southeastern Louisiana University ABSTRACT This paper examines short-run determinants of the Thai baht/U.S. dollar (THB/ USD) exchange rate based on a simultaneous-equation model. Using a reduced form equation and applying the EGARCH method, the paper fnds that the THB/ USD exchange rate is positively associated with the real 10-year U.S. government bond yield, real U.S. exports to Thailand, the real U.S. stock price and the expected exchange rate and negatively infuenced by the real Thai government bond yield, real U.S. imports from Thailand, and the real Thai stock price. JEL Classifcation: F31 INTRODUCTION The choice of exchange rate regimes, overvaluation of a currency, and global fnancial crises may affect the behavior of an exchange rate. Before the Asian fnancial crisis, the Thai baht was pegged to a basket of major currencies and was substantially over-valued. Due to speculative attacks and running out of foreign reserves, the Thai government gave up pegging of major currencies and announced the adoption of a foating exchange rate regime on July 2, 1997. As a result, the Thai baht had depreciated as much as 108.74% against the U.S. dollar. In the recent global fnancial crisis, the Thai baht had lost as much as 13.76% of its value versus the U.S. dollar. While a depreciating currency is expected to lead to more exports, it would cause less imports, higher domestic infation, decreasing international capital infows, rising costs of foreign debt measured in the domestic currency, and other related negative impacts. -

VI. Exchange rates and capital flows Highlights In 1997 and early 1998 current and prospective business cycle developments in the three largest economies continued to dominate interest rate expectations as well as the movements of the dollar against the yen and the Deutsche mark. The yen showed more variability than the mark as market participants revised their views regarding the momentum of the Japanese economy. As in 1996, the dollar’s strength served to redistribute world demand in a stabilising manner, away from the full employment economy of the United States to economies that were still operating below potential. A question remains as to whether the US current account deficit, which is expected to widen substantially as a result of exchange rate changes and the Asian crisis, will prove sustainable given the continuing build- up of US external liabilities. Under the influence of several forces, large currency depreciations spread across East Asia and beyond in 1997. Apart from similarities in domestic conditions, common factors were the strength of the dollar, competition in international trade, widespread shifts in speculative positions and foreign investors’ withdrawal of funds from markets considered similar. The fall in output growth and wealth in Asia depressed commodity and gold prices, thereby putting downward pressure on the Canadian and Australian dollars. Against the background of a strong US dollar, most European currencies proved stable or strengthened against the mark. As fiscal policies and inflation converged, forward exchange rates and currency option prices anticipated the euro over a year before the scheduled introduction of monetary union. Already in 1997, trading of marks against the other currencies of prospective monetary union members had slowed. -

The International Court of Justice Has Ordered Thailand and Cambodia To
The International Court of Justice has ordered Thailand and Cambodia to create a demilitarized zone around an 11th century Hindu temple, which has become a flashpoint for deadly clashes in a long running border dispute. By Jared Ferrie, Chiang Mai The July 18 ruling comes after a request from Cambodia that the ICJ clarify a 1962 judgment that granted Cambodia ownership of the temple and demarcated the border. Thailand accepted Cambodian sovereignty over Preah Vihear temple, but has maintained that the court had no jurisdiction to rule on the border. Cambodia asked the ICJ to issue a clarification on the 1962 judgment in the hope that a more precisely worded judgment would pressure Thailand to accept the frontier. On Monday, the ICJ said it would review the 1962 judgment as requested – a statement that can be seen to favour Cambodia over Thailand, which initially demanded that Cambodia withdraw its request to the ICJ. Cambodia had also asked the ICJ to order Thailand to remove troops from the disputed area. The court instead issued a map outlining a demilitarized zone and ordered both countries withdraw troops from the area. Many analysts welcomed the even-handed nature of the order “By removing troops from the border and its immediate surroundings, nationalist sentiments will hopefully be diffused and issue can be dealt with in a more sober and reasonable way,” said Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights (CCHR). Leaders on both sides of the border have used the dispute to stoke nationalism for their own political gain. Politicians in Thailand are particularly vulnerable to nationalist groups that accuse them of ceding Thai territory to Cambodia. -

The DSAC Sub- committee on the Medical Implications of Less Lethal weapons (DOMILL) has been requested to provide this opinion. On behalf of DOMILL, Dstl Biomedical Sciences has undertaken a review of published information from a wide range of sources on the reported incidence world-wide of injuries from jets of water from water cannon. This is believed to be the first such review despite extensive use of water cannon by police and other agencies in many other countries. There were no fatalities reported in the literature that were directly attributable to the impact of the jet in public order situations.
