Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This new edition collects the stories of the original grim and gritty hard-boiled barbarian from Starslayer issues #10-17 and GrimJack issues #1-13, as originally published by First Comics between 1983 and 1985 by John Ostrander (Suicide Squad, Star Wars) and Timothy Truman (Conan, King Thor). These are the tales that introduced John Gaunt, GrimJack, to the graphic story pantheon. A mercenary in Cynosure, Gaunt rents out his sword-for-hire to clients - some good, some bad, some only out for themselves. Blacjacmac, The Goddess, Major Lash, the Lawkillers, Spook, Mayfair, Jericho, Bob the Watchlizard and the inevitable Gordon Munden, the guy who runs the fabled Munden s Bar in the multidimensional world of Cynosure. They re all here, in the first Omnibus presenting all of their adventures just as Ostrander and Truman created them, thereby launching their meteoric careers and cementing the series as one of the first independent comics to achieve legendary status. Get in on the action from the very beginning as ComicMix presents the man who invented the term grim and gritty - John Gaunt, a.k.a. GrimJack! (Guest-starring Mike Grell s classic cosmic swashbuckler, Starslayer!). Wandering into the Wasteland: White American Masculinities in the Apocalyptic Science Fiction Road Narrative Heather Wintle Submitted for the degree of PhD University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies Date of submission: 9th October 2013 Word count: 99 939 words This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Wandering into the Wasteland: White American Masculinities in the Apocalyptic Science Fiction Road Narrative This thesis examines the portrayal of American white male subjects within the apocalyptic science fiction road narrative, focusing on two visual media in which this genre hybrid features prominently: film and comics. The study builds upon an embryonic body of scholarship addressing several structural, iconographic and thematic connections between the road genre and apocalyptic science fiction. In responding to the call for further research into the road genre’s spread across media, the study observes that apocalyptic road films and comics complicate the dominant critical narrative regarding the road movie’s increasing emphasis upon racially and sexually diverse travellers. Interrogating this discrepancy with an awareness of its ramifications for female, black and queer secondary characters’ representation, the thesis demonstrates how the apocalyptic science fiction road narrative has been persistently and primarily used as a forum for examining, indulging and critiquing various conceptualisations of American white masculinity and associated desires and anxieties.

  • Adapting the Graphic Novel Format for Undergraduate Level Textbooks
ADAPTING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT FOR UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL TEXTBOOKS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian M. Kane, M.A. Graduate Program in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Professor Candace Stout, Advisor Professor Clayton Funk Professor Shari Savage Professor Arthur Efland Copyright by Brian M. Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching.

  • Mundelein Reborn
THE MAGAZINE OF LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO WINTER 2012 Mundelein reborn PLUS PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012 n HOMECOMING WELcome FROM THE PRESIDENT And CEO MICHAEL J. GARANZINI, S.J. Our world is a changing one. As we look at the world that our present students will inherit, we know that they will live in communities and participate in workplaces that are increasingly a mix of cultures, races, creeds, and values. We can see that technology will offer more and more information, and perhaps less and less analysis. We can envision a furthering of environmental degradation and depletion of the planet’s resources. And we anticipate that growing financial and educational gaps between and among different constituents in our societies will lead to even more political and social strife and upheaval around our worlds. Fundamentally, all education is about preparing students for their own future. It is about helping them become critical thinkers who can absorb and create new knowledge. It is about giving them the skills to lead and serve in the world they’re going to inhabit—in a world that will need their leadership. When Jesuits started educating children 450 years ago in Messina, Sicily, it was at the request president’S of the town’s merchant class. They wanted their report 2012 sons to take over the management not only of BEGINS AFTER PAGE 39 their companies but of their city. So the Jesuits devised an educational program, which has been reformed and fine-tuned since that time, Father Garanzini spoke to the City Club of Chicago, a group of to prepare people to be not just merchants, local community and business leaders, this fall.
