Time: 10.00 - 14.40 Subject: On Foot through the District of Blankenese & by Boat through the Port Format: Sightseeing Description: A walk through the quaint staircase quarter [Treppenviertel] of Blankenese, ‘s picturesque district right on the banks of the , is particularly interesting. Climb up and down the many steps and you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Elbe and the Altes Land. Your lunch will be served on board one of the cosy harbour-tour boats that will take you back to Landungsbrücken. Summer residences, staircase quarter, beach dwellers – the slightly challenging walk will lead you through Blankenese with its mix of elegant houses, carefully tended parks and fisherman’s huts while listening to stories about the ferry station, and the oxen path [Ochsenweg].Blankenese is situated in the west of the city district of Altona on the banks of the Elbe. It is part of Hamburg’s so-called Elbe suburbs [Elbvororte]. The unusual name can probably be traced back to a sandbank glistening in the sun – the “blanken nes” (shiny nose) – in front of the historical village, which was washed away by a storm surge in the 17th century. Blankenese became a part of the community, and thus a part of Hamburg, in 1938 only. Today it is home to some 12,000 people.After an approximately two-hour-long walk, a launch boat will take you to Hamburg Landungsbrücken. Time: 10.00 - 15.15 Subject: Hamburg Museum & Boat Tour on Lake Alster Format: Sightseeing Description: If you want to know more about how the city developed from the missionary castle of Hammaburg into the proud Hanseatic city and proverbial “gateway to the world” of today, the Hamburg Museum is the place to go. The museum’s building on Holstenwall was opened in 1922. Today it is the home of ’s largest collection of city history. The visit will be followed by a boat trip on Lake Alster. As visitors progress through the medieval exhibition of “Hamme, Fortress and Hanseatic City” to the exhibition of “The Port - a Major Driving Force”, they take a trip back in time through the all the way to the city’s development in the 20th century. Numerous exhibits covering central themes such as shipping, port and emigration via Hamburg, period flats with furniture typical of the various eras, fashion through the centuries, music and theatre history and the section dedicated to “Jews in Hamburg” give a comprehensive overview of the history of Hamburg.After the museum visit you will be whisked off to the water. An Alster pleasure boat will take you round the Outer Alster [Außenalster] close to the shore with a beautiful view of the city and its many church spires and bridges. Lunch will be served while you are gliding by green banks that are home to many water bird species and rare plants.In the afternoon you will return to Jungfernstieg, from where you can take off on a shopping spree or board a shuttle bus that will take you back to the Marriott Hotel Hamburg.
