MB1/K Mountbatten Papers: Civilian Life, 1965-79 1 MB1/K Mountbatten Papers: Civilian life, 1965-79 In his retirement, Lord Mountbatten was involved with a great many charities and organisations, both locally and nationally, and he maintained an interest in many of the issues with which he had been intimately connected, notably India, defence, the navy and the nuclear debate. He also followed the progress of many books and articles concerning events or personalities with which he had been associated. Part of his time was devoted to sorting his archives, largely with a view to their use by a future biographer. During his retirement, Mountbatten directed considerable energies to the Broadlands estate, opening the house and grounds to the public. He retained his association with local organisations in and around Romsey, and further local interests flowed from his appointment as Governor and Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight. He became Colonel of the Life Guards in 1965 and he was president of the United World Colleges, which involved him in extensive travel overseas, as did the making of the television series THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LORD MOUNTBATTEN. The papers have been arranged chronologically in files which have been placed in an overall alphabetical order. Further material relating to this period of Lord Mountbatten's life can be found in MB1/L, MB1/M and MB1/O. For simplicity the information has been presented in four different books. Book 1 – Mythical to Viking Era (? – 1250) Book 2 – Folkunga Dynasty (1250 – 1523) Book 3 – Vasa Dynasty (1523 – 1751) Book 4 – Recent Royalty (1751 – Present) Book 4 covers the most recent history including the wars with Russia that eventually led to the loss of Finland to Russia and the emergence of Finland as an independent nation as well as the history of Sweden during World Wars I and II. A list is included showing our relationship with the royal family according to the lineage from Nils Kettilsson Vasa. The relationship with the spouses is also shown although these are from different ancestral lineages. Text is included for those which are highlighted in the list. • The Queen's Birthdays
The Queen’s Birthdays Why Does the Queen Celebrate Two Birthdays? The tradition of two royal birthdays was started by George II in 1748. He was born in November and he felt that the weather would be too cold for his annual birthday parade. A solution to this was to celebrate his birthday with a military parade, called Trooping the Colour, held every spring. This tradition has continued ever since – no matter what month the King or Queen was born. Royal Facts 1. Name: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary 2. Born: 21st April 1926 3. Job: Queen Elizabeth II reigns as the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and many of the Commonwealth countries. 4. The Queen celebrates two birthdays every year; one in April and one in June. 5. Since September 2015, Her Majesty is the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch (king or queen). How is Each Birthday Celebrated? 21st April (The Queen’s actual birthday) is usually spent privately with her family and close friends and with a gun salute to publicly wish her many happy returns. On the second Saturday in June, her official birthday is celebrated with the colourful Trooping the Colour parade from Buckingham Palace, down The Mall and finishing at Horse Guards Parade. Her Majesty is then joined on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to the crowds that have gathered to wish her well. Page 1 of 4 The Queen’s Birthdays Glossary A gun salute: A gun salute is a mark of respect for special royal celebrations.

What was already a bumper catalogue for a one-day sale of more than 200 horses has been beefed up still by the inclusion of 16 wild cards that have been rerouted from other recent sales for a variety of reasons. They include horses with some pretty starry pedigrees, so be prepared for some of the major action to take place late in the day. Indeed the last three catalogued all have plenty to recommend them on paper. So, he decided to celebrate his birthday with a military parade, called Trooping the Colour, held every spring or summer. This tradition has continued ever since, no matter what month the king or queen was born. This is the monarch’s official birthday. The Queen’s Actual Birthday The Queen was born on 21st April 1926.
