Current Situation: Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay. The flood situations continued to improve in the northern districts. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further significantly at all points. The Ganges-Padma is flowing above danger level at Goalundo and Bhagyakul. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued falling at a lower rate. Four out of five (except for Tongi Khal) small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj observed fall. Flood situation around Dhaka city especially in the eastern part of Dhaka is likely to start improving slowly from today

FLOOD, RAINFALL AND RIVER SITUATION SUMMARY (as on AUGUST 9, 2007)

FLOOD OUTLOOK

• The flood situations continued to improve in the northern districts (Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Bogra & Jamalpur) and north-eastern districts (Netrokona, Sunamganj & Sylhet) with the water receding significantly in adjacent major rivers. And the situation is likely to improve further in the next 24 hrs, 48 hrs & 72 hrs gradually. • The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further significantly at all points and is flowing 12 cm & 56 cm above danger level at Serajganj & Aricha respectively. The water level in Jamuna at Serajganj is likely to flow below danger level in next 24 hrs. But, the gradual recession of floodwater from the settlement area is subjected to lagging one or two days. • Thus, the improvement in the flood situation in the districts of Serajganj, Pabna & Tangail will continue significantly. • The Ganges-Padma is flowing 85 cm & 73 cm above danger level at Goalundo and Bhagyakul respectively and is likely to fall both at Goalundo and Bhagyakul in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

Situation Report • The Kaliganga at Taraghat and the Dhaleswari at Jagir are in falling trend and are likely to continue falling. • Flood situation in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Chandpur and Dohar & Nawabganj of Dhaka is likely to continue improving further in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs. • The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued falling at a lower rate. The flood situation in the districts of Narshingdi, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj & Gazipur will continue to improve further in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs with the water receding in the river Meghna. • Four out of five small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj observed fall (Tongi Khal at Tongi remained steady). All the five rivers are expected to fall in next 24, 48 & 72 hrs. • Flood situation around Dhaka city especially in the eastern part of Dhaka is likely to start improving slowly from today and will continue in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

WEATHER FORECAST (VALID FOR 24 HOURS COMMENCING 09 AM TODAY)

Synoptic Situation: Monsoon axis runs through Rajsthan, Bihar, west Bengal, central part Bangladesh and thence northeastwards to Assam. One of its associated troughs extends to Northwest Bay. Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay.

Forecast: Light to moderate rain/T. showers accompanied by tempo. gusty/squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi Dhaka and Sylhet divisions. Day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

Dhaka Division

Dhaka

Honorable Chief Advisor Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed visited flood affected Kajlar Par of Matuail union on August 8, 2007. He distributed relief among flood affected people who took place at Kajlar Par High School and Gov. Primary School flood shelter. Afterwards the honorable Chief Advisor observed many residences of other inundated areas of that union and distributed reliefs among the affected dwellers. The Advisor in charge of Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives and Ministry of Labour and Employment and Brigade Commander of 14th Engineering Grade were present with honorable Chief Advisor. Till yesterday The Turag and the Balu were above danger level and continued to rise whereas The Buriganga receded at Sadarghat point.

Narayanganj

The Shitalakhya decreased at 2 points. The Meghna is also in falling trend. The flood situation is improving. Beside other structures 110 fish hatcheries were damaged.

Water is decreasing. Overall flood situation is improving. 174896 people of 35601 families of 2 pouroshova and 67 unions of 6 are affected. 6799 people took place at 34 shelters.

Manikganj

Over flood situation improved. 635696 people of 134656 families affected of 1 pouroshova and 65 unions of 7 upazilas. 34585 people took place at 155 shelters. Three infants died under water. Taka one crore (BDT 10,000,000) have been allocated on August 7, 2007 from Honorable Chief Advisor’s relief and welfare fund.

Narsingdi

Flood situation has improved. 196850 persons, 39672 families of 22 unions of 3 upazilas are affected. 4 people died under water.

Water continued to fall. The flood situation is improving. 3 upazilas and 21 unions of 4 upazilas are inundated and 23344 people are affected.

Situation observed better than previous day.784031 people and 178332 families of 8 pouroshovas and 98 unions of 12 upazilas are flood affected11929 people took place at 58 shelters. The Bangladesh Army is helping the local administration continuously.

Mymensing

Flood water is receding. Situation is improving.82393 people of 17882 families of 50 unions and 3 pouroshovas of 5 upazilas. 57 cartons of biscuits were included among other relief materials.

Jamalpur

The Jamuna is receding rapidly and the flood situation is improving gradually.692233 persons of 144819 families of 7 pouroshovas and 61 unions are affected. 3543 people took place at 21 shelters. 173 cartons of biscuits were distributed with other relieves.

Sherpur

Surrounding rivers of the district are decreasing in a good pace. Flood situation improved and is continuing to improve. 163036 people and 32768 families from 45 unions of 5 upazilas are affected. 1130 people took place at 4 shelters. Additional BDT 18000 was distributed to buy dry food with other relief materials.

Flood situation has improved. 194325 people, 43252 families of 42 unions of 9 upazilas are affected. 3046 people took place at 35 shelters. Additional BDT 90000 distributed for dry food and another BDT 40000 distributed for transportation.

Kishorganj

Situation is improving and continuing to develop. 20757 people of 4409 families from 65 unioins of 11 upazilas inundated. 1187 people took place at 8 flood shelters.

Faridpur

Flood situation has got better. River water decreased and if continues to decrease the situation will be better further within 2 or 3 days. Water receded from low lying areas inside the town. 593615 people, 121435 families of 83 unions of 8 upazilas were affected. 67655 people took place at 143 shelters. 54 bundle CI Sheets, 670 kg flattened rice, 23 carton biscuit and 112 kg molasses were distributed beside regular relief

Rajbari

Flood situation of the district is developing. River is receding. 488983 people, 105898 families of 3 pouroshovas and 42 unions of 4 upazilas are affected. Beside regular relief materials 1813 kg flattened rice and 40 kg molasses distributed.

Madaripur

Flood situation is unchanged. Water level at rivers has risen slightly. Some new areas are inundated slowly. 145195 people, 28691 families of 56 unions of 4 upazilas are affected. 5007 people took place at 20 shelters.

Sariatpur

Honorable President Professor Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed has visited flood affected areas of Shariatpur today morning. During his visit the Honorable President distributed relief materials (rice, lentil, salt, potato, flattened rice, muri, molasses etc.) among the people of flood shelter at the office of the Executive Engineer of Water Development Board and Government Girls’ High School. A concise report on damage and relief activities were presented to the honorable president in the briefing program held at the office of the Executive Engineer of Water Development Board. Honorable President was accompanied by Ms. Geeteara Safiya Choudhury, advisor in charge of the Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Ministry of Social Welfare and Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Secretary to the President, Divisional Commissioner, Dhaka and other high officials.

Water level of the rivers decreased a little. Overall flood situation is still unchanged.498198 people, 101959 families of 5 pouroshovas and 65 unions of 6 upazilas are affected. 1772 people took place at 33 shelters. Beside other relief materials 110 sarees, 146 lungis were distributed.

Gopalganj

Overall flood situation is unchanged.low lying areas of Muksedpur and Kashiani upazila inundated. Few crops and households are damaged of 14 unions of Muksedpur. 1 shelter opened in Kashiani where 30 people took place.13 metric ton rice and BDT 45,000 distributed among the affected people.

Rajshahi Division

Rajshahi

Situation is normal except for river erosion and damage of crops at 1 or 2 places. 43 unions of 8 upazilas were flood affected.

Sirajganj

Water level of river decreased. Water inside the town is receding. Half of the roads of the town became fit for vehicle movement. Overall flood situation has improved.

Flood situation has improved. The Jamuna is decreasing rapidly. 246503 people of 51387 families of 43 unions of 7 upazilas affected. 165 carton biscuits distributed along with other relief materials.

Bogra

Flood situation improved due to rapid receding of river water level. 424519 people, 89820 families of 3 pouroshovas and 29 unions of 4 upazilas are affected. 11404 hec. crops full, 6492 hec. crops partially, households 475 full, 21078 partially, roads 33 km full, 615 km partially, embankment .12 km full, 191 institutions damaged. 4 persons and 20 livestock died. 9975 people at 17 highlands of Sariakandi, 3608 people at 20 educational institutions of Dhunot, 205 people at some 38 safe places took shelter. Till now 206 metric ton GR Rice and BDT 190000 GR Cash distributed.

Nilphamari

Flood situation of the district is normal. 13609 people, 3339 families of 11 unions and 2 upazilas affected. Damaged flood control embankment is being repaired by Water Development Board and Bangladesh Army.

Flood situation is almost normal. Water level of rivers decreased. 75 tin biscuits, 4.56 metric ton flattened rice, 801 kg muri, 0.97 metric ton molasses distributed along with other relief matelials.

Flood situation has developed well. The Khowai is flowing below the danger level. 2933 people of 618 families of 19 unions of 7 upazilas affected. Household 19 totally, 380 partially, roads 61 km partially, 48 institutions, embankments 10 km partially, bridge/culverts 4 damaged. 505 people took place at 8 shelters. 4 metric ton GR Rice distributed among affected people.

Concern Worldwide

Concern Worldwide providing 25MT Chira (5Kg per family), 11MT molasses (1Kg per family), 55000 packets biscuits (5 packets per family) and 30MT chira (5Kg per family) to 11,000 families of Sirajgonj (Kajipur, Siragganj), Faridpur (Faridpur Sadar), Manikganj (Doulatpur, Shibalay, Harirampur) districts through GKS, FDA, STEP, SODAC.

IFRCS

IFRCS distributed relief items to 9,710 families of 74 unions. Each family received 20 kg rice, 5 kg dal, 2 ltrs edible oil, 1kg salt, 1 sari, 1 lungi. They also provided 87 cartoons of WTP (each cartoon contains 10,500 tablets). They are planning to extend these reliefs to 9,400 families. IFRCS covering areas are:

RDRS provided 280 Tarpaulin, 1800kg beaten rice, 500kg molasses, 84 dz matchbox, 84 dz candles to 18,356 familief of Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari.

GUK GUK providing 5000 packets of ORS 5000 pkt alum, polythene sheets for 1500 families and 2000 WPT.

Response from NPD NDP is providing relief to flood affected areas in Sirajgonj district. Details are as follows:

Response from World Vision Bangladesh World Vision Bangladesh is providing relief items to flood affected areas of Netrokona, Faridpur, Bogra, Sirajgonj, Dhaka and Narayanganj. Their relief item includes Salt 17.35MT, Flattened Rice (Chira) 32.50MT, Molasses 13.65 MT , Sugar 3.73 MT , Soyabin Oil 6.55 MT, Potato 4.70 MT, Biscuit 2,300 packs , Milk Powder 1,350 packs, Candle 14,900 packs , Match/Lighter 64,850 boxes WPT 1,150 Strips , ORS 64,500 packs , Medicine Pack (Baby Zinc Tabs. Halozen Packs) 2,500 packs. They are also providing 500 families with safe drinking water (mineral water, 4 ltr per family, 2ltr.X2 bottles) WVB Narayangonj ADP Office.

Response from ActionAid

ActionAid is providing relief to flood affected people in Jamalpur, Sirajgonj, Faridpur through their agencies/partners. In Jamalpur, 2400 households have been provided with package for three days containing Bitten Rice 5 kg, Molasses 1 kg, WPT 10 pcs, ORS 4 pcs, Soap (Carbolic) 2 pcs, Lighter 1 pc, Candle 4 pcs, Drinking water 10 L.

In Sirajgonj, 1800 households have been provided with Bitten Rice 5 kg, Molasses 1 kg, WPT 10 pcs, ORS 4 pcs, Soap (Carbolic) 2 pcs, Lighter 1 pc, Candle 4 pcs, Drinking Water 10 L.

In Faridpur, 1800 households have been provided with Flatten Rice 5 kg, Molasses 1 kg, WPT 10 pcs, ORS 4 pcs, Soap (Carbolic) 2 pcs, Lighter 1 pc, Candle 2 pcs, Drinking Water 10 L, Bag 1 pc, Dettol 1pc.
