Allentown Area Corvette Club, Inc. ‘Vetter’s Letter October 2010 Volume 17, Issue 10

President John Kostick, Jr. From the val Office 610-432-7172 [email protected] The end of another summer is upon us. I hope you got out to enjoy all the shows and Vice-President cruises that you could. There are still several shows and cruises left, and also Kerbeck Toys John Shedlock for Tots run, so try to get the last ‘Vette fix in before it's too late. 610-967-5484 We'll soon be putting the cars away for Secretary the winter, but we still have our Fall Carol Jenkins 610-317-9277 show and the Christmas party left for the year. I know it seems like the summer Treasurer flashes by and the cold weather drags on Janet Mohring forever. I'll be staring out the window 610-965-8593 and day dreaming about next Spring NCCC Governor when we can get the cars out again. I'd Norb Szymanski like to thank all the members who voted 610-691-3108 for another term for me and the rest of Membership the officers, and our new board mem‐ Marty & Laura Hegyi bers as well. Thanks to Sandi and Gary 610-826-5893 Greenzweig for a job well done in mem‐ Events bership, and thanks to Laura and Marty Hegyi for taking over for them. Jeff Mohring 610-965-8593 And, a big thanks to Kevin and Michelle Minnich for taking over the newsletter. We have just started a new fiscal year, so remember to renew your membership. I hope the new NCM Ambassador Richard DeLeon fiscal year will be another great year for the AACC. 610-694-0772 John Kostick Jr. Newsletter Editors Kevin & Michelle Minnich 610-530-0923 [email protected]

The 2011 Grand Sport Dale Jewett, AutoWeek.com There's an all-new Corvette coming in about three years. Why should you care now? You care, or should, because history shows that the final two to three model years of each Corvette generation gives us some of the best, most-refined two-seaters to wear the crossed-flags emblem. And so it is with this 2011 example, fitted with the Grand Sport upgrade--which should be mandatory for buyers not stepping up to the Z06 or ZR1 Vettes, in my humble opinion. Among the Grand Sport upgrades are beefy disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors, wider front and rear fenders to cover a wider track (but also to deliver a meaner look), and front and rear fascia adopted from the Z06. A key addition for 2011 is the availability of the Magnetic Ride Control suspension system. The system uses magnetorheologi- cal fluid in the shocks to stiffen or soften the dampers within milliseconds. A knob on the center console lets you choose be- tween Touring (for a silky smooth grand-touring ride) and Sport (firmer for more aggressive driving, but it won't beat up your backside). The Magnetic Ride Control mates perfectly with the stiff, hydroformed steel spaceframe that debuted on the C5 Corvette in 1997 to create a solid platform that soaks up road imperfections with the precision of a surgeon yet still pulls 1g turns. With years of refinement for the C6, this car fits like a long-loved baseball glove. The clutch weighting finds the sweet spot be- tween too light and too heavy. The shift lever falls right where my hand wants it and runs through the gears with moderate pressure, at most. Even the gear noise from the transaxle has been quieted to the point where it's imperceptible with the radio off and the windows up. The 6.2-liter V8 pulls strongly under wide-open throttle, sending all 430 hp to the rear Base Price: $59,550 wheels. It may be the lowest output of the Corvette engine lineup, but the big thrust is seemingly endless. And it only gets better when the tach hits 3,400 rpm, the dual-mode As Tested: $76,230 exhaust opens up for 6 hp more and the roar makes your body tingle. Yet this power- train is flexible--it's easy to tour around town in , pulling barely more than Drivetrain: 6.2-liter V8; RWD, 1,000 rpm on the tach and hearing the bass burble from out back while racking up 23 six-speed manual mpg or more. And don't let anyone tell you a Corvette convertible can't be a daily driver. This one eas- Output: 436 hp @ 5,900 rpm, ily handled a triple-digit bottom line Costco run without forcing my copilot to share her 428 lb-ft @ 4,600 rpm seat with a box of anything. Curb Weight: 3,298 lb I'm in lust.

Fuel Economy (city/hwy): I'm in love with this car, too. But lust is the better description because I'm smitten to the 16/26 mpg point of looking past some flaws. The full-zoot LT4 package on this car brings some good hardware--telescoping steering wheel and the Bose sound system, to name two. But it wraps the interior in a two-tone black and tan leather treatment that's not pleasing to the eye in either color or the large grain of the leather. Our tester was painted in the new-for-2011 Inferno Orange (a $300 option), which is as close as Chevy has come to replicating the orange on Corvettes from the 1960s and '70s (I briefly owned a '77 painted in Corvette Orange.) But the cashmere-colored folding top doesn't blend well with this tint or the color of the interior trim. If I could succumb to nostalgia, I'd order my orange Vette with the black top and an all-black interior.

2011 Grand Sport (continued)

(Continued from page 6)

Speaking of the top, checking the 4LT box (or 3LT or 2LT) forces you to accept the power folding mechanism. The action is simplified--turn a handle at the center of the windshield header and press a rocker switch to the left of the steering wheel. But the top won't budge if you simply unlatch it and press the button--you need to push the top away from the windshield before the motors will start to whirr. There's no warning outside the owner's manual on this little trick. Makes me wish Chevy would let me choose to go with the manual folding top on something other than the ground-level Grand Sport. Which brings me to the one last point--the price. Holy cow! I don't expect Chevy to just give away something this good--I'm one of the first around here to brag about the Corvette's bang-for-the-buck goodness--but 76 grand feels mighty steep. This car rolls with $16,000 in options loaded on the sticker. There have to be some things you could throw overboard--the nav unit with its archaic interface, the head-up display and some other minor niceties--to get this sticker back down into the $60s, which might make for a tougher choice when compared with something equally fun, such as an Audi S5 or a Nissan 370Z convertible.

Great Drives from Delta’s “SKY” Magazine (Aug 2010)

In Delta’s SKY Magazine, Ezra Dyer had a feature article discussing “what turns a stretch of as- phalt into a great drive.” The article covered hairpin turns, scenic views, and downright famous routes. In no apparent order are these U.S. “Great Drives”: Pacific Coast Highway (CA) – technically 130 miles of State Route 1 from Dana Point to Oxnard – continues up the coast of California and boasts stunning views of the coastline. Pikes Peak (CO) – the 19 mile Pikes Peak highway ascends past gut-wrenching 2,000-foot drops, to the summit 14,400 feet above sea level. The highway is paved part of the way, and is open all year (weather permitting). Blue Ridge Parkway (NC) – “One of the most scenic routes in the country, this road is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Cov- ering 469 miles, it runs southeast of Georgia up to Washington, D.C. Blue Ridge is an All-American Road, meaning it has unique features not seen anywhere else in the United States.” Rutledge Wood, U.S. . Hells Canyon (ID) – This road follows the Snake River along the deepest river gorge in North America, between Oregon and Idaho. Mulholland Drive, LA (CA) – “Mulholland Drive stretches for miles, following the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Hollywood Hills. The section I love is a famous destination for auto commercials: a two-mile stretch of the two-lane, twist- ing highway known and ‘The Snake,’ which has been famous since the 1950s for its celebrity regulars in sports cars and on motorcycles.” Tanner Foust, US Top Gear. Tail of the Dragon (NC) – This winding road in Deals Gap has 318 curves in 11 miles, and it’s one of the nation’s top roadways for car and motorcycle thrills. U.S. Highway 1 (FL) – With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf on the other, this Henry Flagler railroad-turned-highway is truly one of a kind, featuring 42 bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge of Marathon. Great Drives (continued)

(Continued from page 7)

The Saddle Road (HI) – Route 200, or Ala Mauna, used to be so notoriously inhospitable that many rental companies wouldn’t let you take your rental cars here. But conditions have im- proved, so most visitors can now enjoy the highway’s spectacular views. Independence Pass (CO) – This mountain pass in Central Colorado climbs well above the tree line at nearly 13,000 feet, with steep ascents on either side. Dangerous conditions mean the road is closed from the first heavy snowfall until spring. Route 66 (USA) – This is one of America’s most iconic roads, running across two-thirds of the country. Established in 1926, it was the route of many people who moved west in the ‘30s.

Cramming-Informational Message

The following email was sent to residents of Upper Macungie, Maxatawny, and Topton Townships during June 2010:

When’s the last time you checked your phone bill?

Perhaps it’s time you did just that. Recently, a Maxatawny Township resident reported to BLRPD that she had received several emails from “dietbootcamp.com” stating that she had joined their online dieting service, and as a result, she was being billed $15.00 a month. Here’s the tricky part, though‐ she was be‐ ing billed through her Verizon phone account. This is called CRAMMING, and it basically constitutes unauthorized third party billing through your phone account. According to writer Ron Burely, author of Unscrewed: The Consumer’s Guide to Getting What You Paid For, “Your telephone number has become a charge account‐but absent the security of a pass‐ word, PIN, or signature, as you have with a credit or debit card.” Judging by the accounts that I have read online, many people have become victims of this scam simply because they failed to review their own phone bills. Unfortunately, due to the incredibly high amount of identity theft and security breaches in the financial and Internet world, we may never know how our Maxatawny victim’s personal information was shared or how she was registered for this service.

So what can I do to prevent this? Burley suggests contacting your phone carrier and requesting that all third‐party bill‐ ing be blocked. A list of contact numbers can be found here:
