“We moved to Ardeley, Hertfordshire over 30 years ago,” say the current owners of Chirchfield, “as we wanted to move to a country location and experience village life. We both had demanding jobs, so to come home each evening and weekend to the quiet country life was like being on holiday every day. The location is ideal as it was still easy to get to work - I worked in New Southgate and then (40 minutes away) and my husband worked in Stevenage which is only 20 minutes away. Stevenage station also has great links to London and the North.”

The owners have made various improvements to the property since moving in. “Although the house was built in 1982 it did not have a garage and had only 3 bedrooms,” they say. “We could see the potential and built the very large double garage where my husband could pursue his passion for tinkering about with his cars, as well as a conservatory and a large master bedroom en suite. The large master bedroom with en suite has fantastic unspoilt views of the surrounding countryside, making it a wonderfully relaxed place to begin and end each day.”

The garden also has much to offer. “Gardening is my passion,” says the owner, “so I spend hours using the greenhouse, cultivating plants from seed to plant in the herbaceous border. I love harvesting the raspberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries, and picking apples and plums which have grown on our orchard trees.”

For lovers of the outdoors, there is plenty to enjoy in the local area. “We both love running, cycling and walking,” say the owners, “and the village has a small, very friendly running club which uses the footpaths for their weekly runs, and a walking club that meets every 2 weeks. The lanes around the area are suitable for cycling away from the busy towns.”

Educational opportunities are also excellent in the area. “Since retirement I have become involved in our village school as a volunteer helper and clerk to the Governors,” says the owner. “It is a small friendly school with a great reputation, where everyone knows and cares for one another (including the staff) and it feels like one big happy family. Families come from miles around for their children to attend the school.”

“The house is within walking distance of the local pub and farm shop, which is handy if you don’t fancy cooking or you need provisions in an emergency. When we leave Ardeley we will really miss direct access to the countryside which is on our doorstep, fabulous views from the house and the peace and tranquility of the village.”*
