School Counselling Services - It’s Better to Talk

Jenny Hsu, School Counsellor MNZAC School can be an exciting and happy place, but life in general may be stressful and challenging. Coun- selling is a talking therapy and can help us explore what’s happening in our current life and also what’s happened to us in the past in order to change the way we are thinking, feeling or behaving. School counselling gives that extra support to help students make the most of their time at school.

You and your child can expect the Counsellor

to be safe, caring, honest and trustworthy to listen carefully and not to lay blame to explore thoughts, feelings and behaviour to support and help the child to make changes to be sensitive to your family background and culture Jenny Hsu to be creative - talking, playing, drawing, writing and reading to be respectful and keep confidences to include parents where this is helpful to tell you about risks you should know about to refer you and your child to other people and organisations to act as an advocate for you and your child when necessary

Silvia Saez Ramos, Spanish Teacher

I am from Madrid, Spain, where I studied Translation and Interpreting at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In 2008 I was granted a scholarship to study abroad for a year in Zurich, Switzerland. Just after finishing my studies in Madrid, I went to work as a Foreign Language Assistant at a sec- ondary school in England in order to improve my English skills. It was then that I decided to be- come a teacher in England and make a career out of my passion for teaching languages to foreign students. I worked in two different schools in England and especially enjoyed the past three years teaching at Beths Grammar School, where I had the chance to teach both Spanish and German. Outside school I love practising my language skills and learning other languages, swimming, travel- ling and attending cultural activities such as musicals, theatre and movies.

Francisco Garcia Acien, Supply Teacher

I am from a Spanish region called Almeria and I completed my studies in Translation and Interpret- ing at the University of Granada in Spain. When I finished my studies, I was granted a scholarship to work as a Foreign Language Assistant at a secondary school in Montpellier, France. I decided to become a teacher of Spanish, as I really enjoyed my teaching experience there. After that, I moved out to England, as I knew there would be more opportunities for teachers and developed my career as a Languages teacher over five years, working at different secondary schools all around England. For the last couple of years, I taught Spanish and French at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Faversham. I have many interests outside of work, such as travelling, reading, hiking and cooking.

Peter Bonnalie, History and EAL Teacher

My name is Peter Bonnalie and I am here at TES to teach History and EAL and what a pleasure it is to return to Taiwan! I lived here from 1997-99, teaching English in private language schools. I met my wife-to-be here and we now have two daughters, Poppy and , aged 6 and 7, who are both starting in the primary school this year. I have also taught in Windsor in the UK, Bogota, Colombia and most recently in Doha, . I have recently completed a Masters in Educational Technology through the State University of New York. I enjoy hill walking and running, photography, reading non-fiction, football and cricket. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the months ahead.

Dr Andrew Hill, Head of Science

I am from Melbourne, Australia and have spent the past 18 years at Brighton Secondary College in Melbourne, where I was also Head of Science. I have a particular interest in the relationships be- tween cognition, learning and leadership. I have joined TES because of the great reputation of the school and I am looking forward to expanding my professional experience. I am also looking for- ward to pursuing my interest in the history and culture of Asia by getting to know the rich culture of the people of Taiwan and exploring the cities, countryside and mountains. David Bracken, English Teacher

I have taught internationally for ten years and I love the idea of creating a fun and productive learn- ing environment for all students. I believe that teachers have the best job in the world, because they have the opportunity to engage, challenge and be inspired by the young developing teenage minds in their classrooms. When not in the classroom, I enjoy hiking, rugby, football, writing and spending time with my young family. I feel fortunate and excited by the wonderful opportunity to work with the students and staff of Taipei European School.

Eric Swan, University and Careers Counsellor

Originally from California, I grew up crisscrossing the United States, moving from California to Indiana and then back to California during my high school years. I studied psychology at college and competed on the court at Cal State University San Bernardino. Immediately after com- pleting my undergraduate studies, I pursued a master’s degree in Educational Counselling and School Psychology. Two years after completing my graduate studies, I found myself working as the Director of College Counselling at the International Bilingual School of Science Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan for four years. Most recently, I served as the Head of Counselling at Shanghai American School Pudong for three years.

Adam Taylor, English Teacher

I have arrived in Taipei from , where I was teaching English and TOK at Dulwich College, Beijing. Prior to teaching there, I spent four years at the of Penang. I received my educational training in Bath in the UK and qualified and taught in the south west of England before making the move to international teaching in 2009. I previously worked in marketing and publishing in and London. I very much enjoy the outdoors, in particular running and cycling. I also enjoy food and local markets and love to travel; so Taipei seems like a good fit! I arrive with my new wife, Sophie, who I met in Beijing. We are both very much looking forward to setting up a life here and being part of the TES community.

Hannah Brooks, Head of Geography

I have been teaching Geography in and around Sheffield in Northern England for ten years and am really excited to be starting my first international position here at TES. I hope to learn more about the varied and interesting geography of Taiwan and to have the opportunity to travel around the island and region as a whole, discovering all the wonderful places, culture and food that are on offer. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming in Taiwan that I am really looking forward to being part of the TES team and working with all the current staff and students. Page 10 ESC Newsletter

Rowena Bracken, Head of Drama

I arrive back at TES after spending six years teaching in Borneo and Shanghai. This is my tenth year overseas and second time teaching at the school. I trained in the UK as a Drama specialist and taught in two Performing Arts schools before embarking on an international career. As a teacher and director, I am known for my energy, creativity and enthusiasm. My love of theatre and working with young people are evident in the range of performances I have directed. In my spare time, I love entertaining my two young daughters, watching theatre, walking and exploring new places to eat.

Antonia Burrows, Economics and Business Studies Teacher

I’m thrilled to be joining the Business and Economics Department at TES and am looking forward to diving headfirst into the rich and varied activities on offer. I first moved to Taipei in the summer of 2013 and spent two years away from teaching while I studied Chinese at National Taiwan Universi- ty. This was a great gateway into local language and culture and helped me to fall (even more) in love with this vibrant and unique city. Before arriving in Taiwan, I was based in the UK, most re- cently teaching Economics and Politics at Dulwich College in London. I’m excited to be starting up the TES Debating Society, through which I hope to impart my love of current affairs and debate to the students. In my free time I enjoy ‘gardening’ on my balcony, yoga and escaping to the mountains or coast. I can’t wait to get to know the students, parents and staff at TES and joining what looks to be a lovely community.

Camilla Harris, Music Teacher and Operations Coordinator

I was born in Brighton, UK and lived there until I was 18 years old. I went to university at Bath Spa, where I studied for a degree in Music for three years and also played rugby for the university women's team. After completing my degree, I decided I wanted to embark on a teaching career and so did my PGCE qualification at the same university, studying Music Teaching in Secondary Education. From there I started teaching at the Brighton College Prep School and later at the Pri- ory School, Lewes. Before I came to TES, I spent seven years teaching as Director of Music at the Duke of Kent School in Surrey, UK, teaching music to students aged 3 to 16. I love teaching music to all ages and I love performing as much as I can. I have previously played principle clarinet in a Concert band and baritone saxophone in a Big Band. I'm looking forward to my new adventure in Taiwan, as this is my first international school and also my first time in Asia.

Camille Deleuze, French Section Science and Maths Teacher

Bonjour! My name is Camille Deleuze and I am a new teacher in sciences and mathematics. I have an MSc in chemistry. I taught Chemistry and Physics between 2009 and 2012 in Paris. I moved to Taipei three years ago with my husband and I have been teaching French at the French Center of National Taiwan Normal University since then. During this time, I also took the opportunity to become an examiner for the Diploma in French Studies (DELF). I am really looking forward to this new experience, especially since my husband has told me so many stories about the school where he went as a kid. I love the people here in Taiwan. They are nice and easy-going. I believe TES is a great learning environment and I am very glad to be part of the team. A big thanks to my new colleagues for the warm welcome. Vlad Plosinjak, Maths Teacher

I am a secondary maths teacher, most recently from Qatar, but I have taught in Scotland and China as well as back home in Ontario, Canada. Outside of school I like to get outside as much as possi- ble: hiking, climbing, skiing (cross country or downhill), cycling, paddling (flat water or white wa- ter), sailing and the odd bit of team sports (ice hockey and ultimate frisbee). I'm looking forward to being involved in the International Award and trying the climbing in Taiwan.

Neil Harris, Maths Teacher and Head of Year 8 & 9

Our school has attracted regional and worldwide attention with its unique model for integrating German, British, French, and High School sections in terms of their curricula, administration, finance, buildings and facilities.

The Taipei British School (TBS), Ecole Francaise de Taipei (EFT); and Deutsche Schule Taipei (DST) began around 1990 in response to the needs of expatriate families with young children, living in Taipei. The schools soon realised that there was much to be gained by joining forces to establish a combined European campus. This would allow the schools to share some facilities and resources yet teach their own respective national curricula.
