Highlights of this week's report include:

● Bald Eagle ● Waterfowl ● Results of the 73rd Annual Dayton Audubon Christmas Bird Count ● Caesar Creek New Year Bird Count on Saturday, January 10

An adult Bald Eagle was seen on January 1 flying over Meeker Road near Englewood MetroPark.

Waterfowl seen on January 1 on the Great Miami River in Dayton from the Stewart Street bridge south to Sunwatch on West River Road included Hooded Mergansers, Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Black Ducks, Mallards, Canada Geese, American Coots, and Pied-billed Grebes.

The 73rd Dayton Audubon Christmas Bird Count was conducted on December 28. Sixty-eight species of birds were seen, and 7,132 individual birds were counted. The following are the results:

On an unusual sighting note, a Chuckar was observed on the 24th outside a church on Thruston Blvd in south Dayton.

On Saturday, January 10, Caesar Creek will be holding it's first annual New Years Bird Count, sponsored by the Friends of Caesar Creek. It will be from 8:00 a.m. 'til noon, and both novices and experts alike are welcome to participate. Hot soup and chili will be provided for lunch at the visitor's center after the count. Sightings at Caesar Creek State Park on January 11 included Red-shouldered Hawk, Pileated Woodpecker, Cedar Waxwings, Eastern Bluebirds, Great Blue Herons, Northern Mockingbirds, and Carolina Wrens.

An Oregon Junco was observed on the Blue Trail at Germantown MetroPark on January 11.

Two Killdeer were observed on the Mad River last week.

At last week there were three Snow Geese in with lots of Canada Geese, a Bufflehead, good numbers of Common Goldeneye, 20 Ruddy Ducks, 3 Hooded Mergansers, and some Pied-billed Grebes.

Waterfowl seen this week on the Great Miami River in Dayton from the Stewart Street bridge south to Sunwatch on West River Road include Lesser Scaup, Green-winged Teal, Hooded Mergansers, Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Black Ducks, Mallards, Canada Geese, American Coots, and Pied-billed Grebes.

Reports from Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area the past two weeks include Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared and Short-eared Owls, Northern Bobwhite, Chukar, Ring-necked Pheasant, Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawk, and numerous Red-tailed Hawks.

The next Dayton Audubon meeting will be on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p. m. at Cox Arboretum.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Surf Scoters ● Snow Goose ● Purple Finch ● Dayton Audubon Meeting on Wednesday, January 21 at Cox Arboretum

Two female Surf Scoters were seen at C. J. Brown Reservoir on February 17. The Scoters were seen from the camp ground area. There were also about twenty Common Goldeneyes there.

Sightings at Glen Helen Nature Preserve on February 17 included two Winter Wrens and twelve Pine Siskins.

On February 18, a white phase Snow Goose was seen in with a large flock of Canada Geese feeding in a field on the north side of State Route 73 between State Route 48 and State Route 42.

At the Caesar Creek Visitor Center feeders on February 18 were three Purple Finches. Near the Maintenance Building, a Red-shouldered Hawk was seen. Other sightings around Caesar Creek were Eastern Bluebirds, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Tree Sparrows, and Northern Mockingbirds.

Sightings at Englewood MetroPark recently included Field Sparrows, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, and Cooper's Hawk. The next Dayton Audubon Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Cox Arboretum. The program will feature the member's slide show.

Reports from Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on January 24 included sightings of a Saw-whet Owl, a Barred Owl, four Short-eared Owls, and Northern Harrier.

Reports from Ferguson Reservoir near Lima on January 24 included Common Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Ducks, a few Mallards, and Black Ducks.

Two American Pipits were noted at Eastwood Lake on January 24.

A Killdeer was seen along the Mad River on January 26.

At the Caesar Creek Visitors Center feeders on January 24, seven Purple Finches were seen.

An Oregon Junco was reported at the Germantown MetroPark Nature Center feeders last week.

At Hueston Woods State Park on January 25, twenty Ruddy Ducks and some Hooded Mergansers and Scaup were seen. Red-breasted Nuthatches were observed at the Nature Center feeders there.

At Glen Helen Nature Preserve on January 24, Pine Siskins and Carolina Wrens were noted.

The first Dayton Audubon Field trip of 1998 will be to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on Saturday, February 7, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot by the reservoir. Highlights of this week's report include:

● Black Vultures ● Common Yellowthroat ● Bald Eagle

At Hueston Woods State Park on February 9, two Black Vultures were seen. Other sightings there included Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovelers, Common Goldeneyes, and Hooded Mergansers.

On February 1, a female Common Yellowthroat was observed wintering at Spring Valley Wildlife Area. Also noted there were a few Eastern Towhees.

An adult Bald Eagle was observed at Englewood MetroPark near the dam on the on February 7. A couple of Red-winged Blackbirds were also noted there.

Three American Pipits were seen at Eastwood Lake on February 7.

Sightings at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on February 7 included seven Long-eared Owls, two Saw- whet Owls, and about ten Short- eared Owls. About ten Tundra Swans were seen. A few Snow Geese, Common Mergansers, Mallards, Black ducks, a Ring-necked Duck, several Red-headed Woodpeckers, were observed, and a Black-capped Chickadee was seen. The two Chukars continue to be seen around

the horse stables. Four Bald Eagles were also observed.

At Ferguson Reservoir near Lima, a Common Loon was seen on February 8. Also in the area were two Redheads, twelve Lesser Scaup, about two dozen Common Mergansers, some Ruddy Ducks, a Coot, and one lone Snow Bunting.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● American Woodcock ● Short-eared Owl ● Chipping Sparrow ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to The Oxbow of the Miami River on Saturday, March 7

Two American Woodcocks were reported at Miami Whitewater County Park on February 14. Since then, Woodcocks have been reported from around the Dayton area. Other sightings at Miami Whitewater on February 15 included several Killdeer, singing Red- winged Blackbirds, Field Sparrows, and Swamp Sparrows.

Seven Short-eared Owls were flushed from Huffman Prairie on Wright Patterson Air Force Base on February 18.

At Hueston Woods State Park on February 15, there were Green- winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks, and Buffleheads.

A Chipping Sparrow was noted in an area yard on February 21.

At Spring Valley Wildlife Area on February 21, singing Eastern Towhees were noted, as well as White- crowned Sparrows and Northern Shovelers.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Sandhill Cranes ● Eastern Phoebes ● Virginia Rail ● American Woodcocks ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to The Oxbow of the Miami River on Saturday, March 7

Sandhill Cranes have been reported from several areas this week. On March 5, four were seen in a field off Middle Run Road, not too far from Spring Valley Wildlife Area. Also on the 5th, two Sandhills were seen flying over Area B at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. On February 27, one was heard near the Stillwater River on the back side of Englewood MetroPark.

The first Eastern Phoebes of the season were located on February 28. One was seen at the bridge on Martindale Road, and another was seen by the bridge on Old Springfield Road. Both of these are near Englewood MetroPark.

A Virginia Rail was heard at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on February 28.

The number of Turkey Vulture sightings is growing, with reports on the 25th, 26th and 28th. The largest number being sighted at one time was five.

Highlights of this week's report include:

Tree Swallows were first reported locally on March 6 at Spring Valley Wildlife Area, and continued to be sighted there and at Eastwood Lake through the early part of the week. Other sightings at Spring Valley this week included numerous Rusty Blackbirds, Common Snipe, several Virginia Rails, and American Woodcocks. Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, and Lesser Scaup were also seen at Spring Valley, plus many Swamp Sparrows.

An American Pipit was observed at Eastwood Lake on March 13, and a couple of Horned Grebes were seen there a few days earlier.

Sightings around Caesar Creek State Park include Eastern Bluebird, an occasional Purple Finch, Red- shouldered Hawk, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Turkey Vultures. There have been little to no waterfowl on the lake.

The next Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to C. J. Brown Reservoir on Saturday, March 14 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot at the north end of the beach. For

Highlights of this week's report include:

At C. J. Brown Reservoir on March 14, a third-year Bald Eagle was observed, as well as nine species of ducks, including Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, Red-breasted Merganser, Pintails, Shovelers, Ring- necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Black Ducks, and Mallards. Later in the week at the Reservoir, American Wigeon, Bufflehead, Common Mergansers, Greater Scaup, and Pied-billed Grebes were seen. Three American Pipits and lots of Killdeer were seen at the north end of the lake.

At Spring Valley Wildlife Area, a Fox Sparrow and a Greater Yellowlegs were observed on March 19. Other sightings at Spring Valley included Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Wood Ducks, Shovelers, White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows, and numerous singing Swamp Sparrows were present.

At Eastwood Lake on March 16, there were a couple of American Pipits, and on March 17 there were 22 Ring-necked Ducks, 43 Lesser Scaup, and a few Bufflehead. By the 18th, there were a couple of Ruddy Ducks, Bufflehead, a half dozen Horned Grebes, and a few Pied-billed Grebes at Eastwood Lake.

At Cowan Lake on March 18, there were 40 Red-breasted Mergansers, and on the reservoir there were 5 Canvasbacks, 44 Ruddy Ducks, 16 Horned Grebes, a Green-winged Teal, Shovelers, Wigeons, Scaup, and one Common Loon.

On Saturday, March 21 the Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Spring Valley Wildlife Area and will begin at 8:30 a.m. Meet in the lower parking lot beside the lake. The leader will be Linda Sharp. For further information, call her at (937)435-2455.

On Saturday, March 28, the Field Trip will be to Englewood MetroPark, and again it will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot at the east end of the dam on State Route 40. Highlights of this week's report include:

● Greater White-fronted Goose ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to Spring Valley Wildlife Area on Sunday, April 5

On March 28 and 29, a Greater White-fronted Goose was observed. On the 28th, it was seen at the north end of C. J. Brown Reservoir; and on the 29th, it was seen at nearby Reid Park. Other sightings at C. J. Brown Reservoir included Pectoral Sandpipers and Dunlin. Also, Chipping Sparrows were seen.

At Spring Valley Wildlife Area from March 27 to March 29, the following were noted: Brown Thrasher, Greater Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Common Snipe, Virginia Rails, Green-winged and Blue- winged Teal, Wood Ducks, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Northern Shovelers, Ring-necked Ducks, a female Hooded Merganser, a few Tree Swallows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Eastern Bluebirds, Pileated Woodpecker, singing Field and Swamp Sparrows, and one latish Tree Sparrow.

Near Ludlow Falls, three Winter Wrens and Golden-crowned Kinglets were observed on March 26.

An adult Bald Eagle was reported along the Great Miami River near Stewart Street on March 26.

A Hermit Thrush was observed at Englewood MetroPark on March 25.

At Sugarcreek MetroPark on March 28, there were two Yellow- bellied Sapsuckers, Golden-crowned

At the Enon lake on March 27, Lesser Scaup and Redheads were observed.

A pair of Eastern Phoebes were seen in the Caesar Creek Gorge on March 29.

The next Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Spring Valley Wildlife Area on Sunday, April 5. The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. (Be advised that this is the first day of Daylight Savings Time, so if you don't set your clock forward it will be 8:00 a.m.) Participants should meet in the lower parking lot by the edge of the lake. The first local report of Yellow-throated Warbler was received on April 7 when one was observed in the pines at Cowan Lake.

Sightings at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on April 5 included the first local report of Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Sora and Virginia Rails, Pectoral Sandpipers, Common Snipe, Bonaparte's Gulls, and Rusty Blackbirds. An Osprey was seen at Spring Valley on April 6.

At Eastwood Lake on April 7, three male Surf Scoters were observed, plus a Common Loon, Red- breasted Merganser, Bufflehead, Horned Grebes, and Tree and Rough-winged Swallows. Three White- winged Scoters were seen there on April 4, along with 27 Ruddy Ducks and 30 Bufflehead.

Winter Wrens were seen at on April 4.

On April 2 at Eastwood Park, an early Blue-headed (or Solitary) Vireo was seen.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Henslow's Sparrow ● Eared Grebe ● Dayton Audubon Birdathon from 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 24 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25

Henslow's Sparrows were observed singing at Twin Creek MetroPark on April 18 and 19. The sparrows were in the field surrounding the MetroPark parking lot on Eby Road. Three to four singing sparrows were noted. To reach this area, take State Route 4 south past Germantown and State Route 123. Turn left (east) on Eby Road and proceed about 1/4 mile to the park entrance. The birds are easily seen as they sit on weed stems and sing. Please stay on the trails and no tapes are necessary.

On April 19, an Eared Grebe was observed at the pond to the east of Eastwood Lake along State Route 4. Also seen there were Red-breasted Mergansers, Scaup, and Double-crested Cormorants. At Eastwood Lake on the 19th, all the expected Swallows were seen; Cliff, Bank, Barn, Rough-winged and Tree. A couple of Purple Martins were also present, as well as Chimney Swifts.

Warblers reported in the area to date include Prairie, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated, Louisiana Waterthrush, and many Yellow- rumped Warblers.

Sightings at Spring Valley Wildlife Area this week included Sora and Virginia Rails, and Osprey.

In the morning on April 26, eight Marbled Godwits were observed on the beach at Caesar Creek State Park, but they were absent an hour later. A single Marbled Godwit was seen on the beach at C. J. Brown Reservoir the evening of April 26.

Another short-term sighting was five American Avocets seen at Cowan Lake on April 21. They remained just a few hours.

Sightings at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on April 25 and 26 included several Prothonotary Warblers; also Pine, Palm, Yellow, Common Yellow-throat, and Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-eyed and Warbling Vireos, Wood Thrush, Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Baltimore Oriole, Green Heron, Common Moorhen, Osprey, and the usual Sora and Virginia Rails.

Caspian and Forster's Terns were seen locally this week.

At the Fifty Springs area at Caesar Creek, the Prairie Warblers have returned to their usual nesting area.

The Henslow's Sparrows are still singing at Twin Creek MetroPark.

Hodge Road near C. J. Brown Reservoir had Vesper and Savannah Sparrows.

Yellow-throated Vireos were seen at Fort Ancient on April 25.

On Saturday, May 2, the Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Sugarcreek MetroPark, and will begin at 8:00 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot on Conference Road. For further information, call the walk leader, Al Gulvas at (937)433-5729.

On Sunday, May 3, the Field Trip will be to Garbry's Big Woods Sanctuary, and will begin at 8:00 a.m. To reach this area from Dayton, take I-75 north to U. S. Route 36 at Piqua. Go east 3.2 miles, then right on Union-Shelby Road for one mile. Then proceed 1/2 mile on Statler Road to the parking lot. Highlights of this week's report include:

Although the spring foilage is well advanced, the warbler migration is lagging, with a total of just 20 species seen locally to date. Of special interest was a Golden-winged Warbler seen at Sugarcreek MetroPark on May 3. Other sightings at Sugarcreek on May 2 and 3 included Cerulean, Northern Parula, Black-and-white, Black-throated Green, and Blue- winged Warblers; Indigo Buntings, Red-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireos, and numerous Wood Thrushes.

A Whip-poor-will was noted in an area yard on April 27.

Five Willets were present at the beach at Caesar Creek State Park on April 28, and six Willets were there the following day.

The Henslow's Sparrows are still singing at Twin Creek MetroPark.

A Red-shouldered Hawk nest with young has been observed in Bellbrook.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are being spotted locally.

A Bobolink was seen along Hodge Road near C. J. Brown Reservoir.

Sightings at Gilmore Ponds on May 3 included Northern Waterthrush, Blue-winged, Yellow, Yellow- rumped, Palm, and Prothonotary Warblers; Ovenbirds, Common Yellowthroats, and Yellow-breasted Chat. Also Scarlet Tanager, Lincoln's Sparrow, and Orchard and Baltimore Orioles were seen.

Sightings at Eastwood MetroPark this week have included Eastern Kingbird, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Blue-headed and Warbling Vireos, many Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, a few Nashville Warblers, and Indigo Buntings.

On Saturday, May 9, the Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Englewood MetroPark and will begin at 8:00 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot at the east end of the dam on U. S. Route 40. Spring migration continues. Of note were two Worm-eating Warbler sightings, one at Sugarcreek MetroPark on May 6 and the other at Aullwood Audubon Center on May 7.

A late Common Loon was observed on May 13 at Miller's Grove just north of Englewood MetroPark. A few shorebirds were seen at the nearby fishing lake that included Greater Yellowlegs, and Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers. Nesting Bank Swallows were also noted in that area.

Sightings around Dayton on May 13 included the following Warblers: Blackpoll, Cape May, Black- throated Green, Black-and-white, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, American Redstart, Palm, Magnolia, Yellow, Cerulean, and Prothonotary. Also, Great Crested Flycatchers and Eastern Wood Pewee, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were seen.

Sightings at Sugarcreek MetroPark this past week included Blue-winged, Northern Parula, Cerulean, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Common Yellow-throat, Black-throated Green, and Kentucky Warblers; Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Red- eyed, white-eyed, and yellow-throated Vireos, Least and Great Crested Flycatchers, Wood and Swainson's Thrushes, and Indigo Buntings.

On Saturday, May 16, a Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. This cemetery is an especially good place to observe spring migrants. From Dayton, take I- 75 south past I-275 to the Mitchell Road exit. Go right, or north, and turn left onto Spring Grove Avenue and go 1/2 mile to the entrance. On Sunday, May 17, the Dayton Audubon Society will celebrate it's 75th anniversary by having a Field Trip to Germantown MetroPark which will be led by Paul Knoop. Participants should meet at the Nature Center on Boomershine Road at 7:30 a.m.

On May 17, at Germantown MetroPark, the following were noted: Scarlet Tanagers, Kentucky Warblers, Northern Parula, Blue-winged and Prairie Warblers, Eastern Wood Pewees, Acadian Flycatchers, Wood Thrushes (one of which was at a nest with one egg), Pileated Woodpeckers, Northern Bobwhite, and numerous Brown Thrashers and Northern Mockingbirds. Nesting Rough-winged Swallows and Bank Swallows were observed in the muddy hillside below the Germantown dam.

At Twin Creek MetroPark, Bobolinks have been observed in the area around the parking lot, as well as the previously reported Henslow's Sparrows.

Observations at Eastwood Lake and Park this past week have included Blackpoll and Yellow Warblers, Willow Flycatchers, and many Baltimore Orioles.

Along Hodge Road near C. J. Brown Reservoir, the usual late spring birds are present. Those include Savannah, Vesper and Grasshopper Sparrows, and a few Bobolinks.

An occasional Common Nighthawk is being heard overhead in the evening now, and there are frequent reports of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds coming to backyard feeders.

On Sunday, June 7, the Aullwood Audubon Center will host it's 42nd Annual Breeding Bird Census. Those wishing to participate in the census should meet at the center at 6:30 a.m. For further information, call Aullwood at (937)890-7360.

● Little Blue Heron

On Memorial Day, two adult Little Blue Herons were observed at Spring Valley Wildlife Area. The Herons were observed on the west side of the lake in a marshy area. Other sightings at Spring Valley included several Common Moorhens, Virginia Rail, Yellow-throated Vireo, Eastern Kingbird, Willow Flycatchers, Prothonotary Warblers, Wood Ducks with young, and many Baltimore Orioles.

Sightings at Germantown MetroPark on May 24 included multiple Prairie Warblers, Summer and Scarlet Tanagers, Acadian Flycatchers, Wood Thrush, Northern Bobwhite, and Eastern Bluebird.

At Sugarcreek MetroPark on May 22, the following were noted: Lincoln's Sparrow, Kentucky Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, American Redstart, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, and Wood Thrush.

On May 23, along Hodge Road and Yeazell Road near C. J. Brown Reservoir, the usual late spring migrants are present, including Savannah, Vesper, and Grasshopper Sparrows, and good numbers of Bobolinks.

At Huffman Prairie on Wright Patterson Air Force Base on May 22, a pair of Northern Bobwhite was seen, as well as many Willow Flycatchers, Bobolinks, Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Buntings, Savannah Sparrows, and Eastern Meadow Larks. On Sunday, June 7, the Aullwood Audubon Center will host it's 42nd Annual Breeding Bird Census. An Upland Sandpiper was observed on June 6 on the soccer fields in Area B of Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Reports of interest from Spring Valley Wildlife Area in the past week include 3 Swamp Sparrows, a female Blue-winged Teal, and a female Hooded Merganser. Other sightings at Spring Valley included Common Moorhens, Virginia Rails, Eastern Kingbirds, Willow Flycatchers, Prothonotary Warblers, and Baltimore Orioles.

Sightings at Germantown MetroPark on June 7 included Yellow-breasted Chat, Hooded, Kentucky, Yellow, and Prairie Warblers, Ovenbird, White-eyed Vireos, Wood Thrushes, Cedar Waxwings, Pileated Woodpecker, and Northern Bobwhite.

At Spring Valley Wildlife Area on June 14, a Least Bittern was observed from the boardwalk. Several Common Moorhens continue to be seen at Spring Valley, as well as other summer residents: Brown Thrasher, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbirds, Gray Catbirds, Eastern Wood-Pewees, Willow Flycatchers, Green Heron, and Barn, Rough-winged, and Bank Swallows.

Unusual was the appearance of a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at Wegerzyn Garden Center on June 13 and 14. The Night-Heron was observed feeding around a rain puddle on one of the drives.

At Englewood MetroPark on June 20 and 21 the following summmer residents were noted: American Redstart, Cerulean and Kentucky Warblers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Wood Thrushes, Acadian Flycatchers, and Yellow-billed Cuckoos.

Reports from Twin Creek MetroPark include Henslow's, Savannah, and Grasshopper Sparrows, and Bobolinks. These birds are in the fields surrounding the parking lot.

Gary Imwalle, the manager at Spring Valley Wildlife Area, reports that he is in need of volunteers to be observers of the young Ospreys to be hacked at Spring Valley Wildlife Area. Those who wish to volunteer for this project should call Gary at (937) 488- 3115.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● White Ibis ● Bell's Vireo

A White Ibis has been observed at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on County Road 123 in the weedy pond on the east side of the road. The bird was first sighted on July 7; it was observed there again on July 11, and was seen often on July 13. It is described as an adult bird with considerable brown stains on body and wings. Other sightings at Killdeer Plains have included Dickcissels and a few shore birds, including Short-billed Dowitchers and Stilt Sandpipers.

Bell's Vireo has again been spotted at C. J. Brown Reservoir. The most recent sighting was on July 12. To find the area, enter the park on Buck Creek Lane, which then becomes Bird Road. Proceed on Road 1, turn right on Road 2, pass Road 3, and, when you reach the 2nd intersection of the looping road 3, proceed 70 to 80 yards and look and listen on the north side of the road. Please be advised that you may be ticketed by park rangers if you park along the side of the road. So use the parking area and walk back to the site.

A few migrating shorebirds have been seen at the Cowan Lake spillway, and include Least and Spotted Sandpipers. An Osprey has been observed over Cowan Lake, and Prothonotary, Kentucky, and Yellow- throated Warblers were noted in the area. A Red-shouldered Hawk was also seen at Cowan Lake.

At Bresler and Metzger Reservoirs near Lima, Common Loons and a Caspian Tern were seen on July 12. At St. Marys Fish Hatchery on July 12, a Ruddy Duck, a Lesser Scaup, and a Green Heron were observed.

Highlights of this week's report include:

At least 3 Sedge Wrens were observed at the Twin Creek MetroPark . They were seen from the parking lot on July 26. Also seen at the MetroPark were young Bobolinks, and Meadowlarks.

Four Marsh Wrens were noted at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on July 26.

On July 17, an adult Bald Eagle was observed soaring near the Vandalia police department, and an immature Bald Eagle was observed in the Centerville area on July 15.

Shorebirds are making their way back through the Miami Valley. Birds sighted on July 19 on the mud flats in the Great Miami River at the State Route 122 bridge in Middletown included Pectoral, Least, and Spotted Sandpipers, and Semipalmated Plovers. Also, there were about 20 Great Blue Herons.

On the Cowan Lake spillway on July 27, there were 4 Pectoral, 5 Spotted, 12 Least, and 1 Solitary Sandpiper.

Sightings at Englewood MetroPark the last few days included 3 Caspian Terns, Green Heron, Yellow- billed Cuckoos, Baltimore Orioles, Wood Thrushes, Eastern Bluebirds, And Barred Owl.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● White-rumped Sandpipers ● Sedge Wrens ● Henslow's Sparrows

White-rumped Sandpipers were seen at Englewood MetroPark on August 5. Also seen there that day were Least, Solitary, and Pectoral Sandpipers, a Dowitcher, and Lesser Yellowlegs, plus eight Great Egrets and a Green Heron. Also seen were a Scarlet Tanager and a Blue-winged Warbler.

Another White-rumped Sandpiper was seen on August 1 at the Cowan Lake spillway.

Three Sedge Wrens continue to be observed at Twin Creek MetroPark, most recently being sighted on August 1. And a couple of Henslow's Sparrows were occasionally heard calling in that area. These birds were observed in the grassy fields around the parking lot.

At on August 1 and 2, Least and Spotted Sandpipers were observed. A Cliff Swallow and an adult Bald Eagle were seen at the north end of the lake.

A Caspian Tern was seen at Caesar Creek State Park on August 5.

At St. Marys Fish Hatchery, three Caspian Terns, a Bonaparte's Gull, a Lesser Scaup, and eight Great Egrets were seen on August 2. Near Lima at Bresler Reservoir there were four Common Loons on August 2, and a Forster's Tern was seen at the Ferguson Reservoir.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Laughing Gulls ● Black Tern ● Migrant Warblers

Two first-year Laughing Gulls were observed on the beach at C. J. Brown Reservoir on the morning of August 15. The gulls were in with about 200 Ring-billed Gulls and a Forster's Tern.

On August 16, four Black Terns were observed over the lake at Englewood MetroPark. Other sightings there included Black-crowned Night-Herons, a Great Egret, Green Herons, Greater Yellowlegs, and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

On August 14 at Englewood MetroPark, a Blackburnian Warbler and an American Redstart were seen, and on August 13 an Osprey was present.

At Aullwood Audubon Center on August 13, Chestnut-sided, Tennessee, and Blackburnian Warblers were seen.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Migrating Common Nighthawks ● Warblers

On August 25, twenty-four Common Nighthawks were noted hawking for insects just south of Dayton.

On August 27 at Englewood MetroPark, a number of migrants were seen, including Swainson's Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, and Warblers - Magnolia, Yellow, Nashville, Tennessee, Chestnut- sided, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Blue-winged, Common Yellow- throat, and American Redstart. Large flocks of Cedar Waxwings were also observed.

At C. J. Brown Reservoir on August 23, there were no Laughing Gulls on the beach, but Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers were present.

No further reports have been received.

Highlights of this week's report include:

On August 30 at Mercer Wildfowl Refuge, which is on the south shore of Grand Lake St. Marys, a Buff- breasted Sandpiper was seen in the grass around the pools of water by the Refuge road. Also seen there were Stilt Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plovers, and Pectoral, Solitary, Least, and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

At St. Marys Fish Hatchery on August 30, a few ponds were down and a Red Knot was seen. On September 3, there were Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Pectoral and Solitary Sandpipers, and Lesser Yellowlegs. A few Caspian Terns and Great Egrets were also present.

Adult Bald Eagles have been sighted at Caesar Creek State Park, one on August 27 and another on September 3. Also seen there on the 3rd were twelve Turkeys near the beach. Also, there were two Great Egrets, a few Broad-winged Hawks, and some Caspian Terns.

Of interest was an unusually early blue-phase Snow Goose seen along the Great Miami River in Middletown on September 1.

The two juvenile Laughing Gulls were again reported from the beach at C. J. Brown Reservoir this past week.

At Englewood MetroPark on August 31 and September 1, the following were seen: Cerulean, Black- throated Green, American Redstart, Wilson's, Blackpoll, Bay-breasted, Magnolia, and Nashville Warblers; as well as Scarlet Tanagers, lots of Blue- gray Gnatcatchers, a few Great Egrets, and a Green Heron.

The first fall Field trips of the Dayton Audubon Society will be on September 12 and 13.

On Saturday, the 12th, the walk will be at Carriage Hill MetroPark and will begin at 8:00 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot north and across the road from the Visitors Center. The leader will be Dave Nolan. For more information on this walk, call him at (937) 426-9302.

Highlights of this week's report include:

On September 12 at Carriage Hill MetroPark, two Sedge Wrens were noted in the prairie just north of Cedar Lake. Lots of Cedar Waxwings and a singing Warbling Vireo were also observed at Carriage Hill.

At St. Marys Fish Hatchery on September 10, a Lesser Golden-Plover and two Baird's Sandpipers were seen, along with Least Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, and Semipalmated Plovers. There were Forster's and Caspian Terns and Great Egrets there, too.

At C. J. Brown Reservoir on the beach on September 9, there were four Baird's Sandpipers, a few Least Sandpipers, and a Black-bellied Plover.

On September 10 at Mercer Waterfowl Refuge on the south shore of Grand Lake St. Marys, there were Common Snipe, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Semipalmated, Baird's, Least, Solitary, and Pectoral Sandpipers. Bald Eagles were also observed at this spot.

At Englewood MetroPark from the 10th through the 14th the following were observed: Philadelphia,

Other reports from around the area include an Ovenbird that was observed in a backyard, an albino Ring- necked Pheasant which was observed at Huffman Prairie on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and small groups of Common Nighthawks which continue to be seen in the early evening migrating.

The next fall Field Trips for the Dayton Audubon Society will be held on September 19 and 20. On Saturday, the 19th the walk will be at Possum Creek MetroPark and will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot at the farm side of the Reserve, which is off of Shank Road. Highlights of this week's report include:

Sightings at Possum Creek MetroPark on September 19 included Pied-billed Grebes, Green Herons, Spotted and Pectoral Sandpipers, Red-eyed and White-eyed Vireos, and Savannah Sparrow.

Sightings at Caesar Creek State Park on September 20 included an American Golden Plover, Black- bellied Plover, Semipalmated Sandpiper, and Osprey. A couple of Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen, as well as Cedar Waxwings and Sharp-shinned Hawks.

Sightings at Cowan Lake on September 21 included a pair of Black-throated Blue Warblers, Black-and- white and Magnolia Warblers, and a Red-shouldered Hawk.

At Beavercreek Wetlands on September 23, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Black-throated Green, Magnolia, and Bay-breasted Warblers were seen.

Reports from area backyards include White-throated Sparrows, Swainson's Thrushes, and a few migrating Common Nighthawks.

The next Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Germantown MetroPark on Saturday, October 2. More details will be found at the end of this report.

Sightings at Beavercreek Wetlands on September 23 included a Marsh Wren, a Gray-cheeked Thrush, numerous Black-throated Green and Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Magnolia, Blackburnian, Common Yellow-throat, and Nashville Warblers. Swamp and Lincoln Sparrows were seen, as well as Eastern Bluebirds and Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

On September 29 at Englewood MetroPark, there was a Bay-breasted and a Prairie Warbler, Magnolia and Common Yellow-throat, Yellow- rumped and Black-throated Green Warblers. There were numerous Cedar Waxwings, and a few Catbirds and Northern Flickers.

On September 27 at the northwest corner of St. Marys Lake, a Sanderling was observed.

At the St. Marys Fish Hatchery, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Common Snipe, and Pectoral Sandpipers were observed.

On September 27 on the causeway between Ferguson and Metzger Reservoirs near Lima, an immature Bald Eagle was observed, as well as a Sanderling.

On September 25 at Eastwood MetroPark, the following were seen: Black-and-white, Palm, Yellow- rumped, Chestnut-sided, American Redstart, Blackpoll and Bay-breasted Warblers, and Red-eyed Vireos.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Bald Eagle ● American Golden Plover ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to C. J. Brown Reservoir on Saturday, October 10 ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to Englewood MetroPark on Sunday, October 11

An adult Bald Eagle has been at Englewood MetroPark on October 5 and 6. Other sightings at Englewood on the 6th included a late male Summer Tanager, and numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers and Cedar Waxwings.

Sightings at St. Marys Fish Hatchery on October 4 included an American Golden Plover, one Dunlin, Common Snipe, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, and Least and Pectoral Sandpipers. Several Caspian Terns were also present at the hatchery. Two of the three large ponds were drained on the 4th.

Sightings at Eastwood Lake and Park on October 4 included lots of Tree Swallows, Chimney Swifts, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Belted Kingfisher, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

The first Brown Creepers of the season were sighted locally on the 1st and 3rd of October. Other wintering arrivals include Dark-eyed Juncos, and White-throated Sparrows.

Near Ludlow Falls, red-headed Woodpeckers and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak were observed.

75 YEARS DAYTON AUDUBON SOCIETY 1923-1998

Details on the next Dayton Audubon Field Trip to Taylorsville MetroPark on Saturday, October 17 will be found at the end of this report.

There were multiple reports from C. J. Brown Reservoir this week. They included the sighting of a Merlin, Caspian Terns, Ruddy Ducks, Redheads, Northern Shovelers, and Green-winged Teal. On the mudflats at the north end, there were Snipe, Dunlin, Pectoral and Least Sandpipers, and a couple of Long-billed Dowitchers. At nearby Baldwin Lane, there was a good variety of Sparrows, including Savannah, Lincoln's, Swamp, Field, Song, White-throated, and White-crowned. Also in that area were Winter Wrens, Hermit Thrush, and Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, plus numerous Yellow-rumped Warblers.

At Englewood MetroPark this past week, there were sightings of an immature Bald Eagle, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Hermit Thrush, lots of Eastern Bluebirds, Palm Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warblers.

In general, there have been multiple sightings of Brown Creepers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Dark- eyed Juncos, large numbers of Yellow-rumped Warblers, ans an occasional Blue-headed Vireo.

On Saturday, October 17, the Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Taylorsville MetroPark, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot at the stone picnic shelter, for which you take park entrance TR-5 off of U. 75 YEARS DAYTON AUDUBON SOCIETY 1923-1998

Few reports have been received this past week.

At St.Marys Fish Hatchery on October 17, most of the ponds were drained and only a few shorebirds were present. A half dozen Common Snipe and Pectoral Sandpipers were seen, and a few Savannah Sparrows.

Sightings at Taylorsville MetroPark on the 17th included Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creepers, and a Hairy Woodpecker.

Sightings at Englewood MetroPark on October 19 included American Wigeon, Northern Shovelers, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, and two Eastern Phoebes.

The Dayton Audubon Society will be celebrating it's 75th anniversary by holding a banquet on Saturday, October 31 at the Dayton Marriott Hotel. Highlights of this week's report include:

● Surf Scoters ● Long-billed Dowitchers ● Dayton Audubon Field Trip to Whitewater State Park in Indiana on Sunday, November 8 ● Dayton Audubon Program on November 18

On November 1 at C. J. Brown Reservoir, three Surf Scoters were observed , as well as four Common Loons. At the north end of the lake on the mudflats, there were Pectoral and Least Sandpipers, Dunlin, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Common Snipe, and Water Pipits. A few Purple Finch were observed in the surrounding area.

Sightings at St. Marys Fish Hatchery on November 1 included two Long-billed Dowitchers, and four Least and one Semipalmated Sandpipers. On St. Marys lake, there were four Mute Swans and a couple of Horned Grebes. At the nearby Mercer Waterfowl Refuge, a white phase Snow Goose was observed.

On November 1 at Metzger Reservoir east of Lima, there were 500-600 Ruddy Ducks. On Bressler Reservoir, there were only 20 Ruddy Ducks and a few American Coots.

The next Dayton Audubon Field Trip will be to Whitewater State Park in Indiana on Sunday, November 8, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Participants should meet at the State Park entrance on State Route

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Red-throated Loon ● Merlin ● Dayton Audubon Program on Wednesday, November 18

On November 8, a Red-throated Loon was seen at C. J. Brown Reservoir from the north end of the beach. There were 11 Ruddy Ducks and some Gadwalls on the lake. At the north end on the mudflats, there were Common Snipe, Dunlin, Pectoral Sandpipers, and a Greater Yellowlegs.

On November 9, a male Merlin was observed at Eastwood Lake. The Merlin was watched for a half- hour as it harassed a Kestrel and a Kingfisher. There were also a few Ruddy Ducks on the lake.

On November 7 at the Oxbow and nearby Hidden Valley Lake, the following were observed: a male Surf Scoter, Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads, good numbers of Green-winged Teal, Hooded Merganser, Gadwalls, Northern Shovelers, Pintails, and Black Ducks. Horned Grebes were also present, and a flock of Water Pipits were reported in the area.

On November 7 at Sycamore State Park, a Fox Sparrow was seen, plus White-throated and Tree Sparrows, Brown Creepers, and Eastern Towhees.

The next Dayton Audubon Program will be at Cox Arboretum on Wednesday, November 18 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The program will feature noted ornithologist Professor Randall Breitwisch from the University of Dayton.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Franklin's Gull ● White-fronted Geese ● Northern Shrike ● Sandhill Cranes

There has been an unprecedented invasion of Franklin's Gulls into Ohio this past weekend. There were also local sightings. Twenty eight Franklin's Gulls were seen at Grand Lake St. Marys on November 14, and six Franklin's Gulls were seen at Cowan Lake on the 16th.

Twenty seven Greater White-fronted Geese were seen flying over Caesar Creek on November 12, and ninety, or more, White-fronted Geese were seen at Kildeer Plains in Pond 27 on November 15.

On November 16 at Killdeer Plains, a Northern Shrike was seen along Road C-75, just west of C-115. Also seen at Killdeer Plains were Common Snipe, Black-bellied Plovers, Dunlin, and a Rough-legged Hawk.

On November 14, thirty-five Sandhill Cranes were observed in flight at C. J. Brown Reservoir.

At Englewood MetroPark this week, an Eastern Phoebe was seen, plus large numbers of Cedar

Waxwings and quite a few Green-winged Teal.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Pine Warbler ● Baltimore Oriole ● Sandhill Cranes

On November 23, a Pine Warbler was observed at Germantown MetroPark near the maintenance building.

On November 28, a male Baltimore Oriole in good plumage was observed at Englewood MetroPark. Also seen were Purple Finch, Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creepers, Eastern Bluebirds, and many Yellow-rumped Warblers. An adult Bald Eagle was observed at Englewood MetroPark on the 29th.

On November 26, a Brown Thrasher was seen north of Dayton and, also on the 26th, an Eastern Phoebe was observed.

On November 23, twelve Sandhill Cranes were seen at Cowan Lake, and on the 25th, six Sandhill Cranes were observed as they flew over Aullwood Audubon Center.

At Killdeer Plains, a Northern Shrike continues to be seen along County road 75 just west of County

Also large numbers of White-fronted Geese have been seen. From 80 to 100 have been reported. Snow Geese have been reported in smaller numbers, and Short-eared Owls are also present there.

Sightings at C. J. Brown Reservoir on November 22 included a Red- throated Loon, Common Loons, Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, and Pied-billed and Horned Grebes.

The annual Dayton Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, January 3. For further information on this event, call Charlotte Mathena at 433-2167.

Highlights of this week's report include:

● Tundra Swan ● Fox Sparrow ● Dowitchers

On December 8, twelve adult Tundra Swans and four immatures were seen on Eastwood Lake. They did not remain long, but an occasional Common Loon is still being seen on the lake.

The adult Bald Eagle continues to be seen at Englewood MetroPark. The eagle has been hanging around the lake since the 29th of November. On the lake, Ring-necked Ducks,Green-winged Teal, Hooded Mergansers, Pied-billed Grebes, and American Coots are being seen. On the west side of the MetroPark, a Fox Sparrow, a Swamp Sparrow, and Tree Sparrows were seen on December 12. Eastern Bluebirds and Carolina Wrens were also seen there.

At Caesar Creek on December 12, nine Dowitchers were seen at the north end of the lake. Other sightings around Caesar Creek included Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Northern Pintail, Ruddy Ducks, Red-breasted Mergansers, Green-winged Teal, and Hooded Mergansers.

A Hermit Thrush was observed at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on December 6. The annual Dayton Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, January 3, 1999 and the compilation meeting will be on Tuesday, January 5 at the Aullwood Audubon Center. Highlights of this week's report include:

● Sandhill Cranes ● Bald Eagle

Sandhill Cranes have been moving through the area in pronounced numbers, having been seen on the 22nd and 23rd of December. On the 23rd, approximately 200 Sandhill Cranes were seen flying in three large v-formations over Spring Valley Wildlife Area. The day before, on the 22nd, approximately 150 Sandhill Cranes were seen flying high over Union Road near U.S. Route 35. There were also other recent sightings. About 40 Sandhill Cranes were observed at Englewood MetroPark on the 14th, and 27 Sandhill Cranes were seen flying south near Factory Road and U.S. Route 35 on the 9th of December.

The adult Bald Eagle continues to be seen at Englewood MetroPark.The Bald Eagle has been hanging around the lake since the 29th of November,and was still present as of the 21st of December. There were Northern Shovelers and Green-winged Teal on the lake; and Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebirds, Mockingbirds, and Cooper's Hawks in the area.

A Fox Sparrow was observed at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on the 21st.

The 74th annual Dayton Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, January 3; and the Compilation Meeting will be at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5 at Aullwood Audubon Center. For
