Madagascar is home to one of the most unusual mammalian assemblages on Earth and is often referred to as the ‘Eighth Continent’. Its exceptional fauna and flora have evolved over millions of years of isolation. Madagascar has a remarkable diversity of habitats and associated flora, covering an area of about 587 000km². It is the world’s fourth largest island (after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo), yet its variety rivals that of an entire continent. This legendary uniqueness is nowhere better reflected than in its mammals where every native terrestrial species, of which there are 148, is endemic to the island and found nowhere else on the planet! Apart from the amazing diversity of mammals, Madagascar is also world renowned for its endemic birds. Of the two hundred species regularly recorded here, no fewer than one hundred and forty are endemic or near endemic. But the wonder of Madagascar extends well beyond its mammals and its avifauna to the colourful and fascinating flora of this appropriately named “laboratory of evolution”.

LOCATION: KIRINDY NATIONAL PARK IN: 23 NOVEMBER 2019 | OUT: 26 NOVEMBER 2019

Kirindy is a private reserve in the southwestern part of Madagascar and protects approximately 100 square kilometres of one of Madagascar's most threatened ecosystems: its dry deciduous forests. The reserved is accessed by 4x4; a drive famous for its fabulous baobab-lined road, one of the world’s most famous natural images. This astonishing landscape, with roughly a dozen trees about 30 metres in height lining the dirt road, draws travellers from around the world. Kirindy is without a doubt the premier nocturnal site in Madagascar. It is the only place where you have the opportunity of finding the unique Giant Jumping Rat (which hops like a tiny kangaroo!), as well as no less than six nocturnal , including the world’s smallest primate, Madame Berthe’s Mouse Lemur. Other lemur species that you will look out for on your night walks include Pale Fork-marked Lemur, Red-tailed Sportive Lemur and Coqueral’s Giant Lemur. The rare Narrow-striped Mongoose is also readily seen during the day. Another focal species in the dry deciduous forest is Madagascar’s largest predator, the . A good proportion of one’s time may be spent tracking this highly-sought after creature, and one’s chances of encountering it here are excellent. Kirindy is also known for its remarkable flora, numerous snakes (including Madagascar Ground Boa, Giant hog-nosed and Spear-nosed Snake) and other reptiles as well as a suite of dry country birds. Here one may locate the elusive White-breasted Mesite (a species regarded as vulnerable due to its fragmented range and declining population), Sickle-billed Vanga, Grey-headed Lovebird, the scarce Banded Kestrel and Henst’s Goshawk.

LOCATION: MASOALA NATIONAL PARK IN: 27 NOVEMBER 2019 | OUT: 01 DECEMBER 2019

Masoala National Park is the largest protected area in Madagascar. A good variety of lemur species can be found in these forests and by day you have the chance of locating groups of White-fronted Brown Lemur and the highly sought-after Red Ruffed Lemur, which are confined entirely to the lowland rainforests of the Masoala. The Masoala is also an excellent place to find the beautiful Lowland Streaked Tenrec while you should also encounter Eastern Red Forest Rat. These forests are furthermore home to an amazing diversity of bird species which include a large variety of Vangas, Scaly and Pitta-like Ground Rollers, Madagascar Crested Ibis and Red-breasted Coua. The peninsulas most famous avian denizen however is the regal Helmet Vanga, which you stand a good chance of finding during your forest explorations. Other species that you may also find include a variety of snakes including Ground and Tree Boas and the stunning Panther . Insects include the bizarre Giraffe-necked Beetle, superbly camouflaged giant stick insects and some exceptional caterpillars. Night walks here can be extremely interesting and with luck you may locate a few lemur species such as Seal’s Sportive Lemur, Greater Dwarf Lemur, Brown Mouse Lemur and Eastern Fork- marked Lemur. There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the stunning coastline with walks along the beach, splendid snorkelling, kayaking and sundowners.
