Rosemont Farm scooped the filly up for $130,000 as a Keeneland November weanling. “I think this is a good crop of first-crop sires this year and they will sell well,” Taylor Made’s Mark Taylor explained. “Uncle Mo is sort of the headliner of the group. He was such an amazing race horse, not only as a 2-year-old, but he came back after missing a lot of time and I think he impressed people even more after he came back. He was just a tremendous racehorse and his foals look really good. He’s an Indian Charlie out of an Arch mare and these horses have both of that look to them. To me, they look like they can run all day, but that they’ll be precocious, too. This filly that we have is a really good walker. She just floats and has really good balance. SHADAI SIRE POWER Story and photos by Michele MacDonald While America's long wait for a Triple Crown champion has spanned nearly four fruitless decades, Japan has produced a pair of outstanding runners talented enough to sweep all three of that nation's Classic races within the last ten years, and both now stand at the Shadai Stallion Station to great demand. The flashy chestnut (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}), a grandson of Sunday Silence who captured the Triple Crown in 2011 and finished second in the last two runnings of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, took up residence at Japan's top stud this winter. He joined Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who won the Triple Crown in 2005 and who now ranks as Japan's-- and the world's--leading sire by progeny earnings with over $34 million in 2014 to date. While Shadai officials did not provide the exact number of mares in their books this season, each was said to have covered 200 or more, helping to ensure that the incomparable legacy of Sunday Silence will live on for many years to come. "He is so, so popular," said Teruya Yoshida--who operates Orfevre the Shadai Stallion Station with his brothers Katsumi and Haruya--of Orfevre, who has drawn mares of such good quality in his initial season at stud that "we feel very optimistic about his future." Orfevre stands for a fee of -6 million (roughly $60,000). Yoshida said Orfevre is a strong horse who proved, like other offspring of Stay Gold, that he could handle heavy ground, giving him another dimension compared to many of Japan's stallions whose offspring often race their best on firm turf. Orfevre's 2014 book includes Biwa Heidi (Jpn) (Caerleon), the dam of champion Buena Vista (Jpn) ( {Jpn}), and French Group 1 winner Reve d'Oscar (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Meanwhile, Deep Deep Impact Impact continues to embellish what has been a superlative record, leading all Japanese sires over the last three years since the time his oldest runners were four, and adding another Classic winner to his resume this year in the form of G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) winner (Jpn). He stands for the highest fee in Japan and one of the world's highest, commanding -20 million (roughly $200,000). Cont. p12 TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 7/14/14 • PAGE 12 of 19 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

A GALLANTE DISPLAY It was a case of rain, rain and more rain as the elements contrived to wreck Longchamp=s prestigious evening fixture. The featured G1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris turned into a war of attrition as a result, with Gallante (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) prevailing at an amazing 61-1 while providing a 13th renewal for his master trainer Andre Fabre. Despite hailing from that stable and having black-type form not too far from the best, the bay was considered out of the reckoning by the crowds, who could not see beyond Prince Gibraltar (Fr) (Rock of Sunday, Longchamp, France Gibraltar {Ire}). Grand Prix de Paris cont. Raced just once at two, Gallante scored over a mile here in September and returned for the G3 Prix Noailles over 10 1/2 furlongs Apr. 21, only to come up short when third behind the early-season sensation Gailo Chop (Fr) (Deportivo {GB}). The fact that he was sent back here for the 11-furlong G2 Prix Hocquart May 11 speaks volumes about his latent ability, as that was the Derby prep used by his trainer for Hurricane Run (Ire) in 2005, but Gallante was 9-1 and seemingly exposed when fading to third. Given a confidence boost in a 10 furlong conditions event staged on testing ground on his fourth career start and fourth visit to this circuit last time June 12, he won with the authority he was entitled to, and his starting price here appeared ludicrous given his credentials. Positioned near the front from the outset, he was settled behind Marzocco (Kitten=s Joy) and Guardini (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) on the rail and stayed under cover as Teletext loomed on his outer at the end of the home turn. As Christophe-Patrice Lemaire looked confident on the sponsor=s homebred out wide, Pierre-Charles Boudot was only starting to wind up his mount towards the inner. It looked a two-horse war between them with 300 meters to race, with Christophe Soumillon struggling to get Prince Gibraltar to put his best foot forward in behind. Once that familiar Montjeu kick was employed, Gallante was out of reach and, by the time the favorite relented to run straight, it was already too late. Andre Fabre is looking at a sixth straight run here in the Sept. 14 G2 Prix Niel, the traditional 3-year-old 3--Going Somewhere (Brz), 126, h, 5, Sulamani (Ire)-- prep for the Arc, which is also where Teletext could Angel Star (Brz), by Special Nash (Ire). POWER PLAY Traditionally one of Europe=s weaker top-level contests, Chantilly=s G1 Prix Jean Prat offers an opportunity for those who missed out on Classic glory, and Shifting Power (GB) (Compton Place {GB}) fits that bill in today=s Bastille Day feature.
