Brzykcy captured her ! rst award after shutting out No. 25 Pepperdine while making seven saves. She followed that up with a ! ve-save performance against No. 10 BYU, with the lone goal given up being a de" ected clearance off a BYU player’s back. Brzykcy is now 10-3-0 in her career with ! ve shutouts and a career goals against average of 0.87. Her 12 saves already this year in just two games are one shy of her season-best set in both 2018 and 2019. CANALES CAN DO ALL Senior mid! elder Marley Canales has had a hand in nearly every Bruin goal this season. UCLA has scored ! ve goals in two games, and Canales has scored one goal and assisted on three others. Canales scored the game-tying goal against BYU on a penalty kick (she is 4-for-4 in her career on PKs; additionally, she hit the deciding PK in the 2017 NCAA semi! nals). In the season opener at Pepperdine, her ! rst game back since tearing her ACL in October 2019, Canales recorded three assists in the 3-0 victory. The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award Lauren Brzykcy in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. Parker Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week (Feb. 9, 15) picked up her second consecutive Watch List nod. In 2019, her ! rst year at UCLA, she earned All-Pac-12 honors Marley Canales and was twice named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Villacorta was selected No. 9 overall by the Orlando Pride. Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week (Feb. 9) Parker was picked by Kansas City in the second round with the No. 16 selection, and Sheehan was selected by MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List Sky Blue FC in the fourth round with the No. 33 pick. Additionally, defender Karina Rodriguez was picked up as a Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI third team discovery selection by the Washington Spirit. Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI CALLED UP Viviana Villacorta MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List Sophomore Mia Fishel and junior Maricarmen Reyes recently earned their ! rst call-up with their full national team for Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI second team training camps. Fishel attended a 10-day training camp in Colorado with the U.S. Women’s National Team in October. Reyes received her ! rst invitation to Mexico’s National Team camp in January. Both players have extensive Youth National Team experience, with Fishel winning the Golden Ball at the 2020 Concacaf U-20 Championships and the 2016 Concacaf U-15 Championships, and Reyes starting for Mexico in the 2018 FIFA U-20 World Cup. ACADEMIC AWARD The Bruins were honored with the United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award for the ninth consecutive year, including every year during head coach Amanda Cromwell’s tenure. At 3.29, the team improved its year-over- year GPA by over a quarter-point (2018-19: 3.03). FRESH FACES UCLA brings in the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, the second consecutive Top 2 class for the Bruins.
