First and foremost, the internet is a medium that opens up a new space and stage in which hip hop can be performed. This stage is no longer local, but global, which represents both opportunity and challenge. On the one hand, each hip hop artist must assert themselves against countless compet- itors from all over the world; on the other hand, their breakthrough online, if it suc- ceeds, can be monumental in comparison to an analog breakthrough, which is usually confined to a limited area. Therefore, for hip hop artists it is increasingly important to attract attention – as only those who get the attention succeed in this new medium (Prior 2018, Jenkins et al. 2013). The internet’s central influence on hip hop is the inten- sification of the battle for attention – which results in hip hop artists trying new ap- proaches and strategies to gain that attention. One of them is producing their content with an eye to making it as meme-able as possible and capitalizing on meme dynamics on the internet. In this study, I approach memes as a concept, following the definition of Dawkins (2006) who originally defined the concept of memes in his work The Selfish Gene. Memes are small units of information that are usually very simple and catchy (ges- tures, styles, melodies, or phrases). They are transmitted from person to person by imitation or adaption, replicate and spread very quickly, and contribute to the dissem- ination and formation of common behaviors and cultures (Dawkins 2006).

STUDENT: Margaret Parson DEGREE: Master of Arts COLLEGE: College of Communication Information and Media DATE: May 2017 PAGES: 108 This work utilizes an Illusion of Life method, developed by Sellnow and Sellnow (2001) to analyze the 2013 album Yeezus by Kanye West. Through analyzing the lyrics of the album, several major arguments are made. First, Kanye West’s album Yeezus creates a new ethos to describe what it means to be a Black man in the United States. Additionally, West discusses race when looking at Black history as the foundation for this new ethos, through examples such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nina Simone’s rhetoric, references to racist cartoons and movies, and discussion of historical events such as apartheid. West also depicts race through lyrics about the imagined Black male experience in terms of education and capitalism. Second, the score of the album is ultimately categorized and charted according to the structures proposed by Sellnow and Sellnow (2001). Produced by the 17-year-old Soulja Boy Tell Em himself, "Crank That" combines a steel drum hook with a fat-bottomed Mississippi beat, but it's the bizarre lyrics that matter most as questions like "Why me crank that Robocop?" sit next to nonsensical called-out dance instructions. Only a few of the tracks on Soulja Boy Tell Em's debut advocate a dance, but this formula of infectious hook, trunk-rumbling beat, and wonderfully dumb words is all the album knows. If it wasn't for the whiny guitar riff, "Snap and Roll" could easily be mistaken for "Crank That," while "Bapes" is more of the same at a slower tempo with Soulja Boy Tell Em wondering why haters get mad when he dons his Bathing Ape gear. It's only after the great "Report Card" ("Check out my report card/Looked at it, all F's/Took it the teacher/Said 'Throw some D's on it'") that the party drops off, which isn't just a testament to Soulja Boy Tell Em's unique skills but also to executive producer Mr. Collipark's great attitude towards the overall product. Collipark and his crew, the Package Store, handle production for a handful of numbers, Arab and Los Vegaz both helm a tune, but the rest is left to Soulja Boy Tell Em and the end result is a debut that feels like it was downloaded right off a Southern hood laptop.
