Juniors/Youth

We see our junior cricket as vital to the future of the club. Many of our league, County and England players have come through our junior section, but just as important are our parents and coaches who volunteer their services all year round. Junior matches and training sessions have turned into a social occasion with a great family atmosphere. Like other clubs we find it difficult to introduce our juniors into senior cricket. We have a Sunday 3rd Team and this is mainly how we try to introduce our juniors into the senior game with some great success.

Colin Justice, Yateley has sixteen ECB qualified coaches whose commitment not only develops young players but ensures their smooth transition into the adult game. “A high number of our coaches play for one of the adult teams and can help mentor young players into senior cricket,” says Colin.

Yateley’s coaches also work with children in local schools, establishing important community links. Girls coach Rachel McGowan even runs events at the club for local schools ensuring the club remains rooted in the local area. With seven girls selected for the districts training squad and a strong, rapidly growing Girls section Ladies 1st XI captain Debbie Pienaar believes they will experience further success in the near future too.

As you can imagine the general mood in the club is very positive. We asked Rob Bartlett about Yateley’s main challenges and ambitions over the next five years. “The club has developed very quickly since we moved to our new ground. We have had a significant increase in members as well as the number of teams we run and have improved facilities accordingly.

Our committee, volunteers and finances have been stretched by this expansion and like all clubs we are looking to recruit more helpers and attract more funds. We remain though very ambitious, our eyes must be on Premier League Cricket and if we can keep our young squad together it should be possible.”

Based at The Leaze in Dorset, Wimborne and Colehill CC currently competes in the Dorset Cricket League Premier 1. They are a club that is committed to providing their community with a chance to get involved in the game under the leadership of Chairman John Ridout and President David Lawes.

Their first team put together a solid campaign in 2014 as they compiled a record of 8 wins and 9 defeats from their 20 league matches with the other 3 being abandoned. This saw them finish in a safe mid-table position with 222 points on the board.

This should provide the side with a perfect platform from which to build as they head into the off-season. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions then they should be in with a good chance of putting together a successful campaign next time around.

One of the standout features of the Wimborne and Colehill set- up is the superb youth section that they have in place. This part of the club looks to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.

Ellingham CC can trace its history back to 1837 when the Somerley Cricket Club was formed, playing on the estate of the Earl of Normanton. At that point the side was made up of estate workers, businessmen with contacts on the estate and occasional house guests.

Since then, the club has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud and had a successful period just after the war having reformed for the 1948 season. They were led in their first three seasons at the time by the impressive Wally Shutler who took 498 wickets and also won the batting cup. In the present day, the team is based at Picket Post in Hampshire and they currently compete in the Hampshire County Division 1. They are led by Chairman Lee Penycate who is supported by Secretary Justine Turner and the club is looking to progress under their guidance.

In 2014 their first team put together a solid campaign which saw them finish in a safe mid table position within their league. They showed that they have the ability to compete with anyone on their day and should be happy with their overall level of performance.

We are delighted to support the Club, especially in their work with juniors

At Perceptive we recognise that your money is just another tool at your disposal, in the same way as your health and education are.

The reality for many is that the complexities surrounding money can often be a stumbling block rather than an enabler. Do you find yourself asking questions like :

1. How do I know if my money is going to last throughout my retirement?

2. Or, do I yet have enough money to retire, or work as I choose? If not, when will that point occur?

3. How will all these changes in the inheritance tax, pensions and savings rules affect me?

4. Am I getting clear, unbiased, independent advice about my money?

We provide clear Independent advice, and fee only Financial Planning, coupled with a transparent approach to investment based on Nobel Prize winning research.

We cut through the complexity of the investment world to allow our clients to be secure about their future.

We pride ourselves that our client’s voice is their security code with us, never a number.

The biggest challenge for the club is to attract more good quality senior players. All cricket clubs are facing the challenge of diminishing club membership as lifestyles change. As a consequence we have to make the club even more attractive whilst also offering a good standard of cricket.

Another challenge is to improve the conversion rate of junior cricketers to play senior cricket. The fall out rate has to decrease considerably in order for the Club to maintain its three teams and hopefully increase back to the four teams that existed up to a couple of years ago.

The clubs ambitions over the next five years are to maintain what we currently have as a minimum! We want to increase the number of senior teams playing from three to five including the introduction of a women’s team and to have more qualified coaches to teach the sport of cricket.”

Field Close /// www.pitchero.com/clubs/stonesfieldcricketclub /// Founded in 1973

First established in 1973, Stonesfield CC joined the Oxfordshire CricketAssociation in 1977 and enjoyed one of their most successful season’s to date. They play their home games at Field Close in Oxon and we caught up with Club Representative Kevin Sherbourne to find out more about their success.

He told us, “The Club is in high spirits after gaining promotion to the top tier of the Oxfordshire Cricket Association for the first time in the Clubs history. Skipper Tim Wyatt was also top run scorer in the entire league for the 2014 season with a total of 805 runs and this was well celebrated at the Clubs annual end of season dinner. “Stonesfield is clearly a club with a great set up behind Youth Cricket is a very important part to the Club’s future and we currently have teams at Under 10/11/13/15 and 17 levels. It’s taken the scenes and this is thanks nearly 10 years for the Club to reap the benefits of this set up with a number of youngsters now starting to make an impact in the to all of the hard work that senior sides. their Committee has put into The smooth integration between younger and older players is helped with Head of Youth Cricket Daniel Taylor also being 2nd making them a success.” XI captain and a number of senior players being involved in assisting at coaching sessions, plus a number of Father and Son combinations within the club.

We have an excellent Sports & Social Club and invite local businesses to advertise.

Our ground is rated as one of the best in the Oxfordshire Cricket Association and has held many prestige Cup Finals for the league, this is mainly due to the hard voluntary work of groundsmen Mark Hatton and Mike Ogden. The Club hope to add new changing rooms for the start of the 2016 campaign.

The Club’s ambition is to stabilize their position in Division 1 of the O.C A and to keep hold of its talented youngsters. We want to continue the Youth development and maybe introduce ladies/ girls cricket. The Club would also hope to raise the funds for the resurfacing of the outdoor practice net, with the addition of roll on nets.”

Stonesfield is clearly a club with a great set up behind the scenes and this is thanks to all of the hard work that their Committee has put into making them a success. They have been rewarded this time around with some superb performances and results on the field and so long as they are able to continue to perform inthe same manner they should have nothing to fear as they look to step up a league. It is certainly an exciting time to be involved with Stonesfield and everyone at Cricket Club Magazine would like to congratulate them on their success in 2014. Firwood Bootle CC is based on Wadham Road in Bootle, Lancashire and they are a great example of a community establishment with Clubmark accreditation. Their first team currently competes in the ECB Premier League of the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition.

Their first team put together a solid campaign in 2014 asthey compiled a record of 8 wins, 2 draws and 9 defeats from their 22 matches with the other 3 failing to reach a result. This saw them finish in a safe mid-table position with 256 points on the board.

This should provide them with a solid platform from which to build as they look ahead towards the 2015 campaign. So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions then they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the table.

From a batting point of view, David Snell has led the way, contributing 881 runs including 4 half centuries and a memorable 109 not out. He has been well supported by Michael Gill and Gregg Butterworth.

Coggeshall Town CC /// www.pitchero.com/clubs/coggeshalltowncricketclub /// Founded in 1840

Based on Kelvedon Road in Essex, Coggeshall Town CC’s first team currently compete in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Division 1. Cricket has been played in the town for well over 100 years and they have put together a history of which they have every right to be proud during that period.

This season has seen their first team put together a strong league campaign, having compiled a record of 18 wins and just 4 defeats from their 22 matches. This saw them finish 2nd in the table with 372 points on the board.

The only disappointment for the team would have been missing out on the title having come within 5 points of the leaders. This should not take away from the great performances that the side produced this year and they now have a perfect platform from which to build going into the 2015 campaign.

From a batting point of view Dane Cleaver led the way as he scored over 1000 runs at an average of 54, including a top score of 119 and 3 other centuries. He was well supported by a number of other batsmen including Byron Ovenstone, Oliver Blackwell, Rob Jagger, Will Blackwell, Rob Cross and Jimmy Rees.

Their bowlers also played their part with Dale Bailey in outstanding form, taking 42 wickets at an average of just 16. Captain George Blackwell, Rob Jagger, Will Blackwell, Carl Bragg, Rob Cross and Lloyd Edwards have all chipped in with some important wickets to form a formidable bowling attack.

Coggeshall Town is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however as they also have a number of youth sides in place. These sides look to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.

It is important for any side to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their juniors can develop over the coming years.

In order to help their youngsters to make the sometimes difficult transition into the senior game they also have a number of additional sides in place. They also work hard to have an active social side to the club including hosting events such as a Beer Festivals, Charity Quiz Nights, Ladies Day and a Corporate Lunch. This also has the potential to provide them with a valuable source of additional revenue.

There is clearly much to admire about the set up that Coggeshall Town currently has in place. This is thanks to all of the hard work that has been put into the club in order to make them a success and hopefully they will continue in the same manner for many years to come.

Article provided by Chairman Jim Johnston My personal involvement with Gala CC started some 50 years ago when as a very young boy my Dad took me to watch them play. Living reasonably close to the ground I began to spend most of my time there. I progressed through the age groups until I opened the innings for the first 11. On returning to the town after some 30 years absence I was appointed chairman.

The club was founded in 1853. Most of the early players were Mill workers who had moved from Yorkshire and Lancashire. At one time “Throughout Wilfred Rhodes played for Gala before gaining his many honours for England. Through the years textile mill workers have played a large part in maintaining a strong Gala team. Unfortunately, with the demise its history Gala of the textile trade the standard of cricket in the area has suffered. CC has been a club with the community at its heart.

Given the age of the club many enduring friendships have been forged with opponents from south of the Border. For many years Gala played Whitburn who were particularly testing opponents especially with the quality of players such as Lance Gibbs in their ranks.

Latterly the club have an annual fixture with Settle CC. This fixture came about through the friendship of a former captain of both clubs, Malcolm Davison, again someone involved in textiles and his very good friend from Gala, Duncan Patterson. Although both men are sadly no longer with us the fixture is an eagerly anticipated highlight of the season.

Throughout its history Gala CC has been a club with the community at its heart. Although the strict disciplinary code of the past has given way to a more relaxed atmosphere the players and members try to maintain a sense of fair play and honourable behaviour. “Sledging” is frowned upon and although it is practiced by some of the visiting teams, Gala players try to set an example in the hope that poor sportsmanship can be eliminated.

There is a fine spirit about the club at the moment, following a horrendous summer three years ago when the 1st XI managed to play only five games due to the weather, the financial situation was challenging and had we experienced a similar summer the following year it may have become serious.

However the club are fortunate to have some committed individuals who have worked very hard to establish a healthy balance sheet. We are fortunate to play in a beautiful area of the town on an elevated site which affords magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The pitch is also in wonderful condition thanks to the work of some dedicated individuals. It would be fair to say few teams coming to play at Meigle Park leave without expressing their admiration for our ground.

Gala CC run two teams operating within a league structure, the 1st and 2nd XIs. In addition there is a 3rd eleven who play on Friday evenings and age groups at U12, U15 and U17. It would be fair to say our greatest challenge as a club is to find meaningful fixtures for our youth teams. We regularly entertain 40 – 50 youngsters on training nights, sadly we appear to be the only club in the area who have that good fortune. Although we do not run girls teams, girls are encouraged to participate. Indeed we have a young girl who has represented Scotland and who regularly plays for our 1st or 2nd XIs.

In the future we would hope to maintain and increase the numbers of young people who graduate from youth cricket and who go on to enjoy the fun and fulfilment that playing cricket can bring. We would hope that those youngsters would help us reach a higher standard of cricket within our area and perhaps go on to win individual honours themselves.

Meigle Park /// www.galacricket.intheteam.com /// Founded in 1853

Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of the leading sides in the country, providing a great example of a progressive, forward thinking establishment. We caught up with their Captain Wayne Marsden to discuss how they are getting along at present with preparations for 2015 already underway.

He told us, “We’ve had a great first five or six weeks of training so far. There are a few sore bodies at the moment. We are pushing ourselves to the limit which will bode well for the start of the season. We’re putting in the hard yards now. The mood is upbeat and positive about what we are doing, the way we are going about our off season and how it will pan out during the season. The squad are full of confidence.

When we look back at the year, it was a fresh start with the introduction of the new coaching structure. We had a very good off-season and pre-season tour. We had a difficult time around the Keith Poynton tragedy and we didn’t really get going at the start of the season. As a team we struggled for results through one reason or the other. We couldn’t get over the line and we played some poor cricket as well. In the middle of the season we really put our hands up as a squad. In the four-day competition we got a couple of wins and built on the confidence from that.

Then in the 50-over competition we started like a house on fire and that gave us more confidence. We finished the season with the quarter-final against Nottinghamshire, it was a disappointing result but it was the first quarter-final we had reached in nine years so that was quite awarding, especially after starting on minus two points. I was pleased with the way the team went about their business. We then won five out of the last six four-day games, and that is Championship winning form. We can take a lot of confidence from how we played at the backend of the season.

If you look at the year as a whole, you would say it was a good year for the Club.
