2017 Winter Universiade Canadian Women’s and Men’s curling teams announced
TORONTO (U Sports) – U Sports announce that the Alberta Pandas women’s team and the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks men’s team will represent Canada at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Kazakhstan.
The 28th Universiade are set for January 29 to February 8, 2017 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The Alberta Pandas and Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks were chosen following their 2016 U Sports curling championship wins.
Pandas’ skip Kelsey Rocque, vice-skip Danielle Schemiemann, second Taylor McDonald, lead Taylore Theroux, alternate Kristen Streifel, and coach Gary Coderre will represent the women in Kazakhstan after defeating the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 5-4 at the 2016 U Sports curling championships.
Golden Hawks’ skip Aaron Squires, vice-skip Richard Krell, second Spencer Nuttall, lead Fraser Reid, alternate Russell Cuddie and coach James Waite will be the men’s team competing for Canada after their winning the 2016 U Sports curling title against the Alberta Golden Bears with a total score of 7-4.
At the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain, the Canadian women’s team won the silver medal - conceding the gold medal to Russia.

About the 2017 Summer Universiade
The Universiade is an international multi-sport competition that takes place every two years. The event, which is second only to the Olympics in number of participating athletes and countries, is open to competitors between the ages of 17 and 28 in the year of the games who are full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the games.
The 2017 Summer Universiade will feature 14 compulsory sports and seven optional sports. Compulsory sports: athletics, basketball, fencing, football (soccer), artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, tennis, volleyball, judo, table tennis and taekwondo. Optional sports: archery, badminton, baseball, golf, roller sports, weightlifting and wushu.
