GUC GIVES A HEARTY DONATION TO THE COVID RELIEF EFFORTS

The Covid-19 pandemic has practically brought everything to a standstill in all aspects of life in Botswana. Gaborone University College of Law and Professional Studies (GUC) has heeded the Botswana Government’s clarion call to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and has responded with a contribution of over half a million Pula towards its Relief Fund. In addition to the monetary contribution, they also donated food hampers to the less privileged and those hardest hit by aftermaths of the outbreak, as part of GUC’s social responsibility.

The parent institution, GUC donated P250, 000.00, complimented by staff contributions of over P150, 000.00 and a further P50, 000.00 donated through the Kerala Samajam Association of Botswana. GUC also supported the football team in Nshakazhogwe village with food hampers worth over P10, 000.00 as part of their social responsibility. Over and above GUC donated food hampers worth P29,180-00. GUC also partnered with its sister institution Gaborone Commercial College of Higher Studies (GCCHS) in the Covid-19 Pandemic; GCCHS donated a total of P13,050.00 that comprises P10,000.00 from the Management and P3,050.00 from the staff. As stated by GUC’s Managing Director Dr Antoney P. Joseph, the urgent need for everyone in taking an active role in fighting against this invisible and invincible enemy cannot be overemphasised.

GUC is a local tertiary teaching and training institution established in Botswana and has made giving back through various platforms a strong part of their corporate DNA. It is one of the significant players in the local tertiary education sector with 12 graduation ceremonies conducted ever since its inception in 2008. The institution admits students from various fields ranging from legal studies through business to engineering and public health; most of these graduates are able to carve a future out in related industries or business enterprises. With the COVID-19 outbreak, GUC’s Occupational Health and Safety graduates are currently in great demand from organisations who are ready to employ them straight away.

To prevent the spread of the virus, GUC urges all Batswana to unfailingly comply with instructions from the health officials, particularly the need to constantly wash hands with clean water and soap, to wear face mask and to observe social distance, all of which are considered critical to reduce the virus spread. GUC’s motto “FOR GOD AND COUNTRY” has proven to be a real undertaking as the institution has become a regular caregiver and has vowed to always be available in supporting the Botswana government and the general public at all times. 8 Business & Finance Echo Newspaper 29 June - 05 July 2020
