MARK BRAZIL (EXPEDITION LEADER) – Mark earned his Ph.D. from the University of Stirling, Scotland, for his work on avian ecology and behavior in Iceland. Fascinated by island biology, he is a leading authority on the natural (which he also currently calls home). In addition to being a field naturalist, he is a columnist, author, and editor. His books include Wild Asia: Spirit of a Continent; The Birds of Japan; The Whooper Swan; and, most recently, A Field Guide to the Birds of East Asia.

MAYUMI BRAZIL – Mayumi was born and educated in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. She studied Japanese literature in college and is also interested in film and contemporary culture. She has served as a guide in Japan for numerous wildlife photogra- phers, naturalists, and radio producers. She also works as a cultural expert, introducing her home island and its history and customs to visitors from around the world. Mayumi currently lives in Nopporo, located just outside of , on Hokkaido Island.

Know Before You Go For most activities, a relatively moderate level of exertion is required. Ashore, you must be able to walk one to three miles over sometimes rough and uneven terrain. You will be required to remove your shoes while visiting temples, shrines, and a number of other sites. You will need to climb into and out of Zodiacs or other small boats for one or two excursions ashore. The average daily temperatures will range from the low-50s to
