Dear Graduate,

Congratulations! Today is a very special day in your life, and one that you will remember forever—the day you graduate from college. You and your loved ones should be extremely proud of your accomplishment!

Your degree is a testament to your intellectual abilities, your desire to learn and expand your horizons, and your determination to complete a rigorous course of study. The grit and persistence you have exhibited throughout your time at William Paterson will serve you well in everything you do. You have proven that you have the background and training to make a real difference in your life and the lives of those you touch. The University has given you the foundation on which to build a successful career of your choosing.

I strongly encourage you to use your education to become an engaged leader in your community. Our state and country need strong leaders who will mold public policy to create opportunity and make life better for everyone. At William Paterson University, you have learned and grown in a very diverse and dynamic community of educators and scholars, and now you are prepared to take your place in the world.

1 President's Medallion Stephen Bolyai Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance, William Paterson University

Stephen Bolyai, senior vice president for administration and finance, joined the University in 1988 as assistant vice president for business services. From 1990 to 1997, he served as associate vice president for finance and controller, and in 1997 he became vice president of administration and finance. He was named senior vice president for administration and finance in 2016. During his tenure, Mr. Bolyai has been instrumental in transforming and expanding the campus through outstanding budget management, commitment to best financial practices, a strong sense of innovation, strategic property acquisitions, and a commitment to sustainability. Driven by the desire to keep college costs affordable for William Paterson’s students, he consistently focused on limiting tuition and fees while enhancing revenue through alternative sources and containing expenditures. He helped the institution grow its reserves and strategically invest in capital projects, innovative student academic and retention programs, and increased student scholarship offerings. A visible example of Mr. Bolyai’s support for sustainability is the University’s 3.5-megawatt solar panel installation, featuring solar arrays covering numerous campus parking areas and photovoltaic cells on the roofs of University buildings. Ranked among the largest installations at U.S. higher education institutions, the installation was developed through a New Jersey public-private partnership and affords the University the ability to buy solar power at a reduced rate with no upfront costs. Under his leadership, William Paterson was the first university in New Jersey to use a public-private partnership for this type of initiative and other energy reduction projects. Since its inception in 2010, the project has saved the institution $1.5 million while supplying 15 to 20 percent of its energy needs with clean, low-cost energy. The University has received numerous awards for this and other campus sustainability projects. Mr. Bolyai also led an expansion of the campus to coincide with programmatic and student growth. During his tenure, the campus has grown from 346 to 407 acres and the square footage of campus buildings has doubled with the addition of major facilities, including the expanded Science Complex; the construction of University Hall, with facilities for the health professions; the purchase and transformation of corporate office buildings at 1600 and 1800 Valley Road to house the University’s education, business, high school, and continuing and professional education programs and a forthcoming childcare center; several new residence halls; and a vibrant University Commons. He has also been integrally involved in state policy issues that impact New Jersey public higher education. He drafted language and helped with revisions to the New Jersey State Colleges Contract Law, and was instrumental in organizing the North Jersey Public and Private Colleges Purchasing Collaborative. He served as chairperson of the New Jersey Public Colleges Business Officers Group and the New Jersey Public Colleges Vice Presidents for Administration and Finance Council, and on a working group for New Jersey’s Plan for Higher Education under Governor Murphy’s Task Force for Higher Education.

1 Undergr aduate Student Speaker Paola N. Ruiz Communication

Paola N. Ruiz is a May 2021 graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in communication, with a concentration in media production. She has been actively involved on campus, including serving as an on-camera correspondent for WPTV Rumor Report; a member of the visual content team for the University’s student-run radio station WPSC Brave New Radio; public relations chair of the Intersectional Queer Association; and a student representative from the College of the Arts and Communication to the Student Government Association. Ms. Ruiz also has served for nearly three years as a social media intern in the Department of Marketing and Public Relations, where she developed student-centered content for the University’s student- to-student social media initiative, TwillyP, which is designed to increase University pride and build campus community. A member of the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program, Ms. Ruiz has been the recipient of the EOF Academic Excellence Award and was inducted in Chi Alpha Epsilon, the EOF honor society.

Gr aduate Student Speaker John Penola '07 Master of Fine Arts, Creative and Professional Writing

John Penola is a summer 2021 graduate with a master of fine arts degree in creative and professional writing. A 2007 graduate of William Paterson University with a bachelor of arts degree in English, magna cum laude, Mr. Penola also completed the University’s Performing and Literary Arts Honors Track and received the Department of English Excellence in Writing Award for his poetry thesis, The Spire. He has been teaching English and language arts in Kinnelon since 2007, first at Pearl R. Miller Middle School and, since 2011, at Kinnelon High School, where he developed the creative writing program and was named Kinnelon High School Teacher of the Year in 2017. He also holds a master of educational instruction from The College of New Jersey. For his MFA thesis, Mr. Penola has written a poetic memoir titled Be Right Back, in which he remixes and juxtaposes memories to find new meaning in them. In addition to teaching and writing, he composes ambient music and soundtracks under his own name and performs electronic rock under the moniker of Maybe Bomb.

2 3 Faculty Awards 2021 Faculty Award for Excellence in Service Katherine Makarec Professor of Psychology

Since coming to William Paterson in 1997, Professor Katherine Makarec has produced a long and distinguished record of service to her department, college, and the University. A member of the Curriculum Committee for many years, including as chair; the Department of Psychology’s Executive Committee, also as chair; the Developmental Committee; and as faculty advisor to Psi Chi and the Psychology Club, Professor Makarec brings enthusiasm and commitment to her department. She has supervised more than 50 independent study projects for students and been a faculty mentor to the department’s PsyD students as well. She chaired the Department of Psychology for a total of 15 years. In addition, she was her department’s Faculty Senate representative for six years, an at- large Senate representative for several years, served as chair of the Faculty Senate, and has worked on promotion committees, search committees, and on the University Faculty Mentor Program. She also served as founding director of the Cognitive Science Track in the Honors College. In her field, she has served as a consultant on educational films, a judge for the Eastern Psychological Association Graduate Student Poster session, and on several editorial advisory boards including Psychology Applications and Developments, to name a few. Her commitment to the institution is clear in the many services she has rendered in her 24 years at William Paterson University. A graduate of Laurentian University with a bachelor of arts degree with honors, Professor Makarec holds a doctoral degree in general experimental psychology from York University, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto.

3 Faculty Awards 2021 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Expression Emmanuel Onaivi Professor of Biology

Since his arrival at William Paterson University in

2000, Professor Emmanuel Onaivi has published 55 articles with his peers in the area of scientific research. He has edited and co-edited three books and co-authored the third edition of the University’s laboratory manual for the Applied Anatomy and Physiology course, which he also coordinates. He is the recipient of numerous grants, including the recent National Institutes of Health (NIAAA)-funded project, “Neuroimmune behavioral effects of CB2 cannabinoid receptors,” and prior to that, the National Institutes NIDA grant, “Behavioral effects of CB2 cannabinoid receptors.” His breakthrough work with cannabis has earned him international attention. Professor Onaivi served as a Fulbright Scholar at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He serves on several review boards and is a reviewer for journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Neuropsychopharmacology, Journal of Toxicology, and Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Review. Significantly, he involves students in his research work, mentoring William Paterson students in the lab as well as international students and scholars. His supervision of University students in their scientific research is exemplary, having worked with 60 students since 2002. Professor Onaivi earned a bachelor of science with honors from University of Benin in Nigeria, and a master of science in pharmacology and a doctoral degree in neuropharmacology from the University of Bradford in England.

4 5 Faculty Awards 2021 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching Brenda Marshall Professor of Nursing

Professor Brenda Marshall brought professional as well as academic experience to William Paterson University upon her arrival in 2010. She has put that experience to work teaching more than 20 different graduate and undergraduate nursing courses, both online and in person, and in working with students in empirical research and methodology. She is a published researcher, involving students in her research. She has obtained numerous grants in the areas of mental health and nursing, such as a grant from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for “Evaluating mental health first aid certification for NPs,” and support from the Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund: Skills for Success, U.S. Department of State, for “Increasing emotional resiliency in at-risk teens through MHFA [mental health first aid] training and increasing higher education literacy.” She contributes to the University in her service as director of the College of Science and Health’s Center for Research and as a member of the University’s Cannabis Research Institute. Professor Marshall serves on two editorial boards and is a peer reviewer for publications such as the Journal of Psychiatric Nursing and Journal of the Study of Alcohol and Drugs. She has won awards in her field, including selection as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the National Excellence in Research Award from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Professor Marshall was a Fulbright Scholar Specialist in mental health/education in Malta. A graduate of Eisenhower College, Professor Marshall holds three master’s degrees: a master of science in advanced management for clinicians from New York University; master of science in health education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a master of science in nursing-psychiatric nurse practitioner from Rutgers University. She earned her doctor of education degree in behavior science/health education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
