For adults with literacy challenges, everyday tasks can present real problems. Reading product labels, following street signs, and filling out job applications can be difficult. The Lee County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) is here to help. Through volunteer and donor support, we are able to help adults in Lee County develop and improve their reading skills and, in doing so, have helped to expand their world one page at a time.

The LCLC is a volunteer, non-profit, United Way agency dedicated to providing free, one-to-one tutoring to Lee County, Alabama citizens. The LCLC is principally funded by the United Way of Lee County, with additional funding coming from independent and corporate donations, grants, and memberships. The LCLC offers help with reading, writing, math, and GED preparation. Tutors work individually with learners to find the methods that work best for them. The LCLC also attempts to match learners seeking help with tutors living or working in the same area. The LCLC gives people options for learning that can't be found anywhere else.

Montgomery, AL 36104

(334) 832-1402

This is a residential reentry center that helps non-violent men on probation or parole from the Alabama Department of Corrections make a successful transition to responsible living in a community. Recognizing that the greatest factors in relapse into crime are: homelessness, unemployment, lack of education, job skills, work history, addiction to drugs or alcohol, and often breakdowns in the family unit, Renascence has designed a program to address each in a holistic manner.

Renascence provides a positive home, a safe community and a structured environment helping ex-offenders obtain and keep employment and live responsibly in society. The program helps former inmates overcome challenges in the areas of work skills and habits, substance abuse, education and family and community responsibilities. Similar to the word "renaissance," the name Renascence (“reh NAY sons”) means rebirth and was inspired largely by the fresh start the men begin in our program.

Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The purpose of the Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is to provide a comprehensive program of substance abuse services for those who lack insurance coverage or the financial resources to obtain private treatment for residents of Montgomery, Elmore, Autauga and Lowndes counties. Adult IOP provides a treatment setting that is less restrictive than residential treatment yet permits individuals in treatment to receive professional care without disrupting their home environment and employment status. The program is designed to provide educational, cognitive-behavioral and coping skills training, with a focus on relapse prevention

21 and abstinent lifestyle training, as well as family education.

Adult IOP follows the Matrix Model of substance abuse treatment. The Matrix Model is an evidence based/best practices model of substance abuse treatment endorsed by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). It provides a set of focused lesson plans for groups and individual sessions developed by the Matrix Institute in California consisting of informational DVDs with accompanying literature for family group sessions and worksheets addressing specific recovery- related topics for groups and individual sessions. The foundation of this model is largely influenced by Motivational Interviewing, a non-directive approach to overcoming the ambivalence that keeps many people from making desired changes in their lives. The Matrix Model teaches clients the skills necessary to maintain abstinence from alcohol and drugs as they initiate the process of recovery, and teaches them the issues and skills relevant to preventing relapse once sobriety has been achieved. Adult IOP consists of three phases: Phase I- Stabilization (Early Recovery), Phase II-Foundation (Relapse Prevention) and Phase III- Continuing Care (Social Support). The length of IOP is generally 28 weeks. The information included in the Matrix Model is based on clinical research conducted by the Matrix Institute.

Treatment is provided in our Elmore County office located in Millbrook, Alabama and at our Main Campus in Montgomery. Both sites house comfortable, private office spaces for individual sessions, and spacious group rooms equipped with DVD/VCR equipment and other audio/visual aids for group sessions. Comprehensive treatment in Adult IOP includes individual counseling, HIV testing and education, group counseling, family education, drug testing, Case Management and AA and NA support group involvement.
