In Camaiore, province of Lucca, there is this extraordinary historical complex for sale, which has a rich, charming history.

First news of this estate witness its original function, in Roman times, as a watching post.

Today the property measures approximately 2,800 sqm and is composed of a big main villa built in Bourbon times, surrounded by a garden with centuries-old olive trees, one of which is one thousand years old; this is completed by a tower, several annexes and buildings, former religious buildings and agricultural fields.

The tower was brought back to light in the 15th century, from its original foundation, and features five floors measuring over 60 sqm each. The buiding behind it also dates back to the 16th century, once an inn that welcomed pilgrims crossing the Via Francigena.

In the following years, the Grand Dukes of Tuscany embellished this estate with works, starting in the Renaissance period up to 1780, when it passed into the hands of the Bourbon Parma. The Bourbons then finished the great reclamation works that had started in Roman times, creating a wonderful naturalistic garden where exotic and rare plants were cultivated and tended, some true botanic rarities that were typical of the 18th-century scientific spirit.

As part of the Bourbon embellishments there are also a plate from Della Robbia's School anchored on the back of the tower, a Roman marble well, a marble altar with an 18th-century Madonna statue, wood and gypsum tiles depicting the Way of the Cross, and internal frescoes depicting the villa itself.

The story told by this property for sale is truly extraordinary and more than a thousand years old: born at the same time as the Colosseum, it was owned by the most important noble families of the area, the Savoy and Bourbon, of whom we can still see the crests above one of the fireplaces.

Ilustrious guests also stayed here, including Queen Margherita of Italy, for whom the stucces on the ceilings were removed, as she was allergic; it is also said that Zita, the last Empress of Austria, was born here. Despite its undoubtable historical heritage, the villa is free from any restriction and may be used for a variety of purposes, from tourist accommodation to private home.
