THE ABOVE NAMES HAVE BEEN CLEARED (SUBMITTED) FOR ORDINANCES. PLEASE DO NOT RESUBMIT.

Concerning the ordinance work for the dead the Lord has said: “For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect.” D&C 128:18 How can you help? PLEASE DONATE to the PFO to continue the research. Volunteer to help with the ordinance work. May we have the attitude: If I could, I would help. “There is no other work so immersed in the Spirit as the sacred work of preparing names for the temple and the subsequent ordinances that are performed there.” P 498 “Revelation comes to individual members as they are led to discover their family records in ways that are miraculous indeed. And there is a feeling of inspiration attending this work that can be found in no other. When we have done all that we can do, we shall be given the rest. The way will be opened.” P 505-6 Mine Errand from the Lord Boyd K. Packer.

LEST WE FORGET! Joseph Toronto, First Italian Convert of this Dispensation. By Boyd L. Cardon

Often we hear of the first three missionaries who went to as , Joseph Toronto and T.B.H Stenhouse (Thomas Brown Holmes Stenhouse). Who was Joseph Toronto? Giuseppe Efisio Taranto commonly is known as Joseph Toronto. He was born 25 June 1816 in and moved to Palermo, Sicily when he was 2 years old. He was a sailor in the Mediterranean Merchant Service. He moved to the USA in about 1838 and ran a small business in New York, New Orleans and the harbor selling supplies to ships. While in Boston he met the Mormon missionaries as they travelled to Britain and he quickly became converted to the Restored Church. He is the first Italian and the first Catholic to join the Church. He later traveled to Nauvoo and gave $2,600 in gold coin, everything he had, to Brigham Young to finish the construction of the Nauvoo temple. In 1848, Toronto emigrated as a Mormon pioneer from to Utah Territory and was the first Italian to set foot in the Salt Lake Valley. In Utah, he was employed as the keeper of the church's 2 | P a g e

PFO REPORT NUMBER 67 DECEMBER, 2015 cattle herds on in the . On May 10, 1849 he received his Patriarchal Blessing which said in part: “The Lord … hath called thee from thy native land to make of thee a messenger of salvation to thy native land, even to thy brethren.” In October, 1849 general conference he was called to serve a with Lorenzo Snow to open the land of Italy for the restoration of the Gospel. On Tuesday, February 26, 1850 Joseph Toronto and seven other missionaries who had left Great Salt Lake Valley the previous October, sailed from New Orleans per ship “Maine” bound for England. Joseph joined Elder Snow in Southampton from where they and Elder T. B. H. Stenhouse, a recent English convert, departed for Italy on June 15th. They arrived in Genoa, Italy on June 25, 1850. Elder Snow had studied and prayed to know where in Italy the Lord would have the missionaries begin their work. He had concluded, based on his conversations with Joseph Toronto, that “”all was dark in Sicily, and hostile laws would exclude our efforts” and that “no opening appeared in the cities of Italy.” But the history of the Protestant Waldenses (in French, “Vaudois”) attracted his attention. He sent Elders Toronto and Stenhouse to explore the conditions among the Waldenses for missionary work. Within three weeks they sent back a positive encouraging letter. In July, 1850 Elder Snow went to join his companions in Torre Pellice (La Tour). Elder Snow sent Brother Toronto to Palermo, Sicily the first part of August, 1850. He did not return to the Piedmont region until August 15, 1851. He was absent during the early events of dedicating the land of Italy to the preaching of the gospel. A direct descendant, James A. Toronto served as a missionary in Italy and later as president of the Italy Catania Mission from 2007-2010. Reference: Joseph Toronto: Italian Pioneer and Patriarch

EMAIL FROM OUR RESEARCHER, GIOVANNI CENA. DISCOVERY OF THE CONVERTS TO CATHOLICISM (THEE VOLUMES REGISTRI DEI CATTOLICI: Convertiti Valle San Martino, Valle Luserna and Valle Perosa Books 1 and 2)

“When I work with the records, I feel the guidance of the Spirit. I have been led to hidden documents or ones that have been misplaced. Last year I found an old note. I began an investigation. The feelings within me grew and after reviewing various materials I found the records of the Waldenses who were catholicized and put in the wrong binders. This is not any work of mine. It is the Spirit that guides. There are various documents that I am studying. He has photographed more than 5000 documents. Now I am trying to organize them and send the results. There are duplicates and 3 | P a g e

PFO REPORT NUMBER 67 DECEMBER, 2015 repetitions. I think these records are interesting because then list families and the ages of the people. The Pinerolo records from volumes 184-211(1684-1696) are written in French and have not been translated. Some have asked about the possibility of going to Cuneo where some Cardons lived to do research. The library in Cuneo is open only one day a week and one needs an appointment to research there. The personnel are not always available or friendly.” Giovanni CENA Dec. 15, 2015

Thus we need to have $12,500 available each year to continue the research. In the next addition I will give a projection of how many volumes we need to have him research. Thank you for your continued financial support.
