  • 1 Interrelationships of the Cereal Cyst Nematode
pi,- t.. 1 INTERRELATIONSHIPS OF THE CEREAL CYST NEMATODE, HETERODERA AVENAE, AND THE TAKE-ALL FUNGUS, OPHIOBOLUS GRAMINIS ON BARLEY. Roger Cook Department of Zoology and Applied Entomology, Imperial College of Science and Technology. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London. 2 ABSTRACT Observations on a number of field populations of the cereal cyst nematode, Heterodera avenae and the take-all fungus, Ophiobolus graminis, on barley, suggested a relationship between the two, in which higher nematode populations were associated with low incidence of take-all. The level of root invasion by H. avenae and multiplication of the nematode showed this relationship with the fungus. Further observations, in which the number of eggs per cyst was negatively correlated with level of take-all infection suggested one explanation of the relationship. The effects of 0. graminis on H. avenae were studied in a series of pot experiments. In the presence of high levels of take-all the multiplication of natural populations of the nematode was depressed, and this was associated with reductions in the number of eggs per cyst. Experiments in sterilised soil showed that production of cysts and their contents were decreased by take-all. Smaller cysts were produced on plants infected with O. graminis. On take-all infected plants the rate of development of the nematode was slower and the ratio of males to females produced was higher than on uninfected plants. Take-all appeared to affect the sex determination of larvae, fewer females developing in infected roots. Invasion of barley roots by H.

"Following the excitement of seeing our first Purple Emperor inside our office yesterday, exactly the same thing happened again today at around 9.45am. The office door was open and we spotted a butterfly on the inside of the window, on closer inspection we realised it was a Purple Emperor. It was much smaller than the one we had seen the day before and more battered. However we were able to take pictures of it, in fact the butterfly actually climbed onto one of the cameras and remained there for a while. It then climbed from camera to hand, and we took it outside for more pictures before it eventually flew off. It seemed to be feeding off the hand.". Issue No. 247 Hill & Valley THE PARISH MAGAZINE OF HURSTBOURNE PRIORS, LONGPARISH, ST MARY BOURNE & WOODCOTT 50p April 2021 Happy Easter Hill & Valley Parish Magazine for Hurstbourne Priors, Longparish and St Mary Bourne & Woodcott April 2021 Dear Friends, April is upon us, the gateway to spring can, of course, be very mixed with hail and even snow, whilst at other times we may bask in warm sunshine, and often we can experience all four seasons in one day! Day by day the polyphony of morning birdsong increases and we cannot but notice the garden waking up with fresh buds and plants, all of which I find quite exciting. The new life and new beginnings that April speaks of, is something very relevant to us all as we begin to embrace change and adapt to life after Covid in anticipation of lockdown being eased. Life, new beginnings and hope are also central themes of the Easter story. Christian hope is not rooted in a distant or romantic past, remembering a one off event two thousand years ago. Easter faith is prophetically grounded in the here and now as the death and resurrection of Jesus spans across time and space and speaks to us today. If we look about our world today, we can see the tragic consequences of the Pandemic across our planet, and indeed our own nation, we also note the human condition is very much alive as our broken humanity continues to inflict war and violence on other human beings. In all these situations, Holy week and the Passion of Christ points to the opportunity of life transformed, redeemed and transfigured; Easter life.

Whether you have maintained any New Year resolutions or begun some new venture, I hope 2020 is a year where challenges and triumphs may be faced with courage and confidence. As you may be aware by now, Jane and I shall be moving to Yorkshire to begin a new ministry in March: more about that in next month’s edition. Towards the end of 2019, Dodie received some exciting news from Bishop Tim, the Bishop of Winchester which said the following; “It gives me great pleasure to be able to write to invite you to become an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral. I write with the support of the Dean having heard the warmest commendation of your ministry amongst us from colleagues in the senior staff. This is not only an expression of my appreciation for your service in this diocese and the wider church, but also in recognition of the wisdom and passion for mission which you will continue as a member of the College of canons. “ Dodie will be made a canon of Winchester Cathedral at 3.30pm on Sunday 23rd February when we shall set aside any evening service here so that we can support Dodie at the Cathedral for this special occasion in Dodie's life and the life of the Benefice.
