*** UPDATE: USCIS RATE HIKES *** by William F. “Fred” Hoffman< [email protected]>

We have talked a lot in Gen Dobry! over the last year or so about proposed USCIS rate hikes, which seemed likely to sock genealogists with massive increases in fees for the kinds of records we use. Fortunately, there appears to be some good news to share.

A recent issue of the e-zine Nu? What’s New? cited an article from Judy G. Russell, The Legal Genealogist, stating that there is “cautious good news” about the proposed USCUS rate hikes. For more information, you can visit this page on her website:

She quoted a source explaining that “The fee (for a record search) would increase from $65 to $240 ... The fee for (a paper record) would increase from $65 to $385.” She described these increases as “ghastly,” which seems an apt description.

Fortunately, a federal court in California and a federal judge in Washington, D.C. put these increases on hold. The Administration appealed ... But then came the election, and a new Administration took over. The appeal was dropped. Late last month, the USCIS posted a notice in the Federal Register saying it was complying with the injunction and not assessing the new fees. Then came an Executive Order last week specifically ruling out that fee increase. (Now, that’s my sloppy summary of what happened. Read Judy’s article for a better, more precise account.)

What this all means is that for now, at least, the overall hike in fees is off. However, that doesn’t mean genealogy records won’t be involved in increases later. Judy reminded us, “When it comes to records access, a genealogist’s work is never done.” She advised continued support for efforts such as Records Not Revenue, .

But we all need good news, and I’d say this qualifies.

*** LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ***

Subject: PGSM Fundraiser Successful!

Editor – Charles Chase sent an update on a fundraising effort mentioned in the last issue.

Hi, Fred, Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 2 I just wanted to let you know that the T-shirt project I initiated in support of the PGSM has now been concluded. The Society netted $747, which is considered a success.

Thank you again for your support in Gen Dobry!

Charles Chase

Editor – It’s always a pleasure to hear that a Polish organization has been successful in raising funds for a project. If the wonderful readers of Gen Dobry! helped make it happen, the more glory to them!

*** AUGUSTÓW AREA RECORDS ***

Editor – I (among others) recently received a note from Zbyszek Mierzejewski of the Jamiński Zespół Indeksacyjny, the Jaminy Indexing Association. Zbyszek asked us to spread word of a new project of JZI. I am happy to do so. This is a translation of the note he sent me.

Good Morning,

I am requesting you to share on Facebook or any other means and maybe support. The content can be slightly modified.

For the first time as JZI (JZI Association) we have decided to experiment with a public collection for the translation of an important book for the history of the region.

We are raising money for the translation of Księgi pamięci Żydów Augustowskich [Memory Book of the Jews of Augustów].

The amount to be collected is substantial: a little over 30 thousand zlotys! [about $7,550]

Who is this collection addressed to?

* to everyone who loves the Augustow Land and its history * to lovers of Jewish history and culture * to Jewish organizations and associations * to anyone who likes the idea of publishing the book and would like to support the project with even a minimal sum of money.

We ask you to share it as widely as possible because this is the only way to raise the required amount of money. Each collected thousand zlotys is the amount necessary to translate 1 author’s sheet from Hebrew or Yiddish into Polish (1 author’s sheet = 40 thousand characters). More here, just share the link: Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 3 or insert this text on a copy-paste basis.

Editor – I should explain, I’m not Jewish, nor do I have roots in the general area of Augustów, in northeastern . But I love to encourage such projects because support for research and publications of this kind is worthwhile for its own sake – and I’m also convinced these projects have a way of helping people in ways we may never even know. Consider the Biblical saying, “Cast your bread upon the waters” (Ecclesiastes 11:1) – or maybe it’s a matter of karma. Perhaps all you get is a soggy loaf. But I’ve had experiences that convince me otherwise.

*** THE LATEST FROM POLISH ORIGINS *** by Zenon Znamirowski

Editor – I like to pass along the contents of newsletters sent out by PolishOrigins because not everyone subscribes to the newsletters. It seems they almost often have something interesting to share, and the word I hear from their customers is overwhelmingly positive.

Aren’t you sometimes fed up with writing on the genealogy forums, mailing lists, groups, and reading the replies, and writing again, and reading again, in hope of getting useful advice?

It often works, but sometimes you would like to make sure that you fully understood the advice given and would like to know what concrete steps you should take next.

You would like to ask additional questions but you thought that could make you look “uneducated”...

You would like to add pieces of information that might seem not relevant enough to write about or just didn’t want to share them in public.

Or maybe in this strange time of isolation you just wish to talk the things over in real time with a “genealogical soul mate”? With someone who not only is an expert in the field of Polish genealogy but who will also carefully and with kindness listen to what you have to say and will try to help you.

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 4 This kind of direct interaction between genealogists and guests has often brought almost miraculous effects during our Genealogy Tours.

Not everyone can travel to Europe. And now because of COVID-19 restrictions it is still impossible for most. However, a direct video conversation is possible for all who have a computer with an internet connection.

And this is what we propose to you as of now, March 2021:

PolishOrigins Genealogy Video Consultation with our genealogy, history, and citizenship experts.

As PolishOrigins, we have built a team of passionate, knowledgeable, personable people, and acquired together 15 years of experience in carrying out research in every corner of Poland, both in its modern and the former borders. No matter if this would be a project concerning German ancestors from Pomerania, Jewish family members from shtetls of Southern Poland, Poles from Western Ukraine, history of a tiny village in Lithuania, Polish citizenship, or permanent residence - we may know what to do.

How it works: – 1. You fill out the inquiry form, where you describe the subject (or subjects) you would like to talk about:

– 2. We analyze the information you sent and get back to you within 7 working days (most often it will be much quicker) with an answer if we are able to help you.

– 3. If we can help you then, based on your preferences, we appoint a date and time and provide you a link for you to book the meeting.

– 4. After you made the payment we send you a link to where the online meeting will take place. You don’t need to have any special device or software installed. Regular computer (smartphone, tablet) with a browser will do.

– 5. The consultation lasts up to one hour. During the meeting, you can discuss all issues with an expert dedicated to your project. You see the process of analyzing your case through the eyes of an experienced genealogist. We go through specific tools applicable to your case, verify where the records are stored, discuss formal and legal procedures (if applicable) and see what are the options to move forward. You have “backstage” access to see how we work. You see everything on your screen and you can ask as many questions as you can fit in the 60 minutes consultation.

– 6. After the consultation, you receive a summary report where the next steps you could take in your research are described. If you agreed for recording the meeting you will also receive video recording.

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 5 The cost of the consultation is 590 Polish złotys (about $150 now). This includes the preparation work we conduct after receiving your request, the meeting itself, and the report you receive from us after the consultation.

If you are ready to give it a try here is the PO Genealogy Video Consultation inquiry:

--- Formal announcement: We hereby announce that the Terms of Use of Genealogy Services was updated with details concerning the new Genealogy Video Consultation service which is part of our PolishOrigins Genealogy Services. The current Terms of Use of Genealogy Services you will find here:

--- Looking forward to “listen to you”! Zenon Znamirowski Founder and CEO, PolishOrigins

*************************************** *** FAMILYSEARCH UPLOADS POLISH RECORDS! ***

Editor – You may recall in past issues, we have discussed the lack of Polish records being uploaded to the FamilySearch site. Researcher Debbie Greenlee has paid particular attention to this, and she had a rather pleasant surprise to share on March 6. I quote:

FamilySearch uploaded 3 million records and images to its website for the week ending March 6, 2021:

SURPRISE! Records were ADDED to: Poland, Lublin Roman Catholic Church Books, 1784- 1964

Images and index of church books containing baptisms and births, marriages, burials and deaths for the parishes in the Lublin Roman Catholic Dioceses of Poland. Births end in 1912, marriages in 1937, and deaths in 1982.

For some reason the Lublin diocese has continued to allow LDS to film its records and publish them. I would suggest that if you have ancestors from the Lublin diocese that you download the films that pertain to your parish so you have them in case LDS decides to pull them.

Editor – Experience suggests Debbie’s advice is sound. Just because records are available today doesn’t mean they will be tomorrow. Get copies of the ones you need, just in case. And thanks to FamilySearch for these added records. Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 6 *************************************** *** GENETEKA INDEX UPDATES *** by Waldemar Chorążewicz

Editor – Once more, let me pass along new Geneteka indexes updates shared by Waldemar on Facebook’s Polish Genealogy group this month. You can find assistance with the two-letter province abbreviations online, for instance, at . Note that UK is Ukraine and BR is Belarus. Also worth remembering is the tip Henry Szot shared with us in the April 2018 issue of Gen Dobry!

Here is an easy way to find out if an index has been updated. On the top right of results pages, there is a list of options (opcje). The last item is Wyszukaj tylko indeksy z ostatnich (search only indexes in the last), with a choice of 1, 3, 7, 14, 31, and 60 days. This permits receiving results only in the chosen time period. Example of use: 1) select the search page icon, 2) select świętokrzyskie, 3) select parish Sokolina and the wyszukaj option with 31 days, 4) if any, only results entered for the last 31 days will be shown. A surname might be added to further limit results.

Do you have a brick wall you would like to break down?

Would you like new strategies for finding an ancestor?

So questions like “Where was my Babcia born in Poland?” and “Can you translate this 10-page document to English?” can be better asked as “My Babcia was born in the Russian sector where can I look to find her birth record?” and “Where can I have a 10-page document translated from Polish to English?”

Since time is limited, any questions not answered will be featured in the Q&A section of upcoming bulletins.

Submit your questions including your name and which Society you belong by April 16th to

POLISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS AND THE JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF BOSTON CO-SPONSOR A ZOOM TALK:

“Finding Vital Records from Poland Online” by Julie Roberts Szczepankiewicz

Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 1:30 P.M. via Zoom; register beginning on May 3 at

For most of us, vital records (birth, marriage, and death records) comprise the backbone of our family tree. Tracing our ancestry in vital records from Poland is therefore a fundamental genealogical research goal. Fortunately, vital records from Poland are becoming increasingly accessible online through a variety of indexed databases, as well as unindexed scans. In this lecture, Julie will explore some of the major repositories for Polish vital records, including Geneteka, Metryki, GenBaza, Szukajwarchiwach, FamilySearch, Jewish Records Indexing Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 24 (JRI) Poland, and JewishGen. But, what if you are not certain exactly where in Poland your ancestors were from? Not to worry. Julie will begin with a brief overview of the process used for determining origin, highlighting the types of records that are most likely to indicate specific place of origin. She will also suggest resources for deciphering misspelled place names and identifying the parishes and registry offices where vital records were kept.

************************************ *** MORE USEFUL WEB ADDRESSES ***

I enjoyed this article posted to the blog for Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter [EOGN] on March 3. The title of the article is “Are You Recording Fairy Tales in Your Genealogy Records?” A reader complained about “all the erroneous information found in online family trees.” Eastman responded, “Instead of spending your time looking at other people’s fairy tales, I suggest you look at original records and newspapers (or digital images of original records and newspapers). That’s the manner that experienced genealogists have used for decades, and it has always worked well.” I know it’s a basic bit of truth, but sometimes we need to get back to the basics. ______

As a resident of Houston, Texas, where a mid-February cold snap resulted in many frozen water pipes and subsequent damage, I found this article from EOGN pertinent: “How to Preserve Water-Soaked Books and Papers in an Emergency.” Need I say more? ______

This EOGN article is probably familiar to most of our readers with Lithuanian-Jewish roots. Still, it’s a tremendous collection of historical records and may benefit many who don’t realize its value. The title is “MyHeritage Adds Several Million Lithuanian-Jewish Records from LitvakSIG, 1795–1940.” As you would imagine, most of the records are from places currently within Lithuania. But if you know your history, you know the records can also originate in places

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXII, No. 3, March 2021 — 26 now in Poland, Belarus, possibly even Ukraine. ______

This is another item I found via EOGN – as you may have already concluded, I check that site for new articles constantly. This is an article by Mary Nickles about “How researchers at BYU are using genealogy to prevent cancer.” Given how many of us are affected by cancer, either ours or that of a loved one, this is surely of interest to our readers. ______

I’m sure many of you have already tried Deep Nostalgia™ , software from MyHeritage that animates family photos. I used it on old photos of my parents, with mixed results. Mom looked really good; Dad looked a little psychotic. All in all, it’s interesting, and sometimes pretty effective. If you haven’t tried it and want to know more about it, this article will help you. ______

The March 7 issue of Nu? What’s New included a report by Jan Meisels Allen on RootsTech 2021, which took place in late February. An important point is that the programs from RootsTech 2021 are available online for one year. You can see the list of sessions at . The article in Nu? pointed out that “You must be registered at FamilySearch to access the conference and registration is free. They require your name and email address.” ______

Larissa Goralski Bailey posted a note to Facebook’s Galicia Family History Group (at least, I’m pretty sure that’s where I read this – I have got to remember to record my sources!). Anyway, she said “You can upload an image to Google Translate and it will translate for you.” She posted the preceding URL to give more info on how to do this. Now, we do have to keep some things in mind. The quality of Google Translate’s renderings is uneven at best; I have written about this before. Also, to translating text in an image requires interpretation by OCR (optical character recognition) software, which is also no sure thing. So the results of OCR interpretation put through Google Translate could turn out to be a real train wreck! Still, it’s worth mentioning this, because who knows? They might get it right sometimes. ______

Agnieszka Maja Mizgalska posted a note to Facebook’s Polish Genealogy group on March 2, sharing the news that volunteers from the Warmia-Mazury section (in former East Prussia) have created a non-commercial indexing project, Project Warmia. The project coordinator is Donata Stemplewski, and so far they have entered over one hundred thousand records from thirty parish and civil registry offices. Agnieskza encouraged folks with roots in northeastern Poland to visit the site – and if you can join the project and help with the indexing, by all means, please do so by contacting Donata at .

I’m not sure we’ve ever mentioned this site before. It’s a blog about Lemko history, culture, and events. As such, it’s definitely a resource some of our readers should know about. ______

I noticed a review posted to Facebook’s group “Polish Culture, Food, and Traditions” this month by James Conroyd Martin, the author of numerous well-loved books on Polish history, including the Polish trilogy beginning with Push Not the River, as well as The Boy Who Wanted Wings. He was writing in praise of the book The Heart of a Hussar, by Griffin Brady. He said this book “will transport you to the 17th century, when an elite cavalry protected Poland interests.” It is available in Paperback and Kindle editions at the above link. ______
