Rep. Tim Sherman (I-R Winona) is co-sponsoring a bill that would wsu require the state board of community colleges to develop a system- wide standard that would cover general education requirements at four-year universities.

WSU coaches teach the kids Photos & text by Brian Poulter

Many parents turn to the Young Men's Christian Association in Winona to help coach their children in the game the YMCA invented — basketball. Twenty of ,the twenty-four coaches in this years basketball league are Winona State students. These student coaches three divisions, first and second graders, third and fourth graders, and fifth and sixth graders. Steve peterson, director of athletics at the YMCA, said, "those Winona State students were really a big help. The only way we had to repay them for their volunteer service was with a pizza party." Each coach usually volunteers between three and five hours of their time each week to the leagues. The teams meet twice a week, the first day to practice and the second day to play against another Paul Allen attempts to call time-out, after his team team. practicing. Julie Buddie, a coach of one of the first and second grade teams, insisted the coaches are repaid for their efforts other than by the pizza party. "We receive the satisfaction of watching these kids grow within the game," she said. "It is rewarding to see them learn sportsmanship, such as after each game when they shake hands." "One of the most rewarding moments for me was the last game, which ended in a tie," Buddie said. "I was sitting down with my team complimenting them for their playing when one of the kids from the other team came over and shook my hand and said, 'nice game coach."' It would certainly seem that the spirit of the game has been instilled in the youngsters. During some of the games the score of one team would be more than twice that of the other - but you couldn't tell when looking at the intensity of the playing or at the smiles on the faces of the players. Look closely, and you might see the next Larry Bird, or Dr. J. Then look at the coaches, may you'll see the next Bobby Knight or Al McGuire.

by JOHN PAUL SCHALLER Sports Editor The Winona State University gymnastics team finished second in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Invitational on Saturday as it was edged out 138.20 to 137.55 by the University of Iowa. Gustavus was third in the meet with a 134.25, while Fort Hayes, Kansas was fourth with a 131.65. La Crosse took fifth place, while Eau Claire, North Dakota State and Superior finished sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Kathy Horyza won the vault for the Warriors with a score of 9.25. Tracey Harvey, who is the topped-ranked all-around gymnast in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, finished third with a 9.0 and Jean Schuler was eighth with an 8.75.

In the floor exercise for Winona State, Katie Dempsey finished in first place with meet record of 9.2. Harvey and Schuler finished in a tie for third with a score of 8.85. Sylvia Ponce-Sawyer finished in fifth on the uneven bars at 8.75 and freshman Laura Robillard finished in seventh with an 8.65. Ponce-Sawyer finished fourth on the balance beam with a score of 8.45 and Schuler was fifth at 8.40. In the all-around competition Schuler finished second at 34.35 for the Warriors and Robillard was fifth at 34.1. Head Coach Steve Juaire was disappointed with the second place finish, but he was still pleased with the Warriors performance. "We looked great," said Juaire. "I, think we were the best team there." According to Juaire, the scoring got away from the judges and the Warriors may have come out on the short end. "We hit on a greater percent of our routines in this meet than we have all year," said Juaire. Juaire was also pleased with the individual performance of Laura Robillard. "It was Laura's best meet of the year," said Juaire. Juaire also felt that the absence of Sue Litschke due to a back injury may have hampered the Warriors efforts. Litschke, who is ranked third in all-around in the NAIA poll, has been bothered by a sore back. She is expected to compete in Saturday's meet against the University of Wisconsin-Madison at McCown Gym. Juaire, whose Warriors are ranked first in the NAIA poll, feels that Winona State has an excellent chance to win the meet. "We have beaten Madison once already this year, but they were without five of their people," said Juaire. The meet starts at 1 p.m. and Juaire says it will be an excellent chance to see some very good gymnasts competing against each Winona State's Kathy Horyza performs a maneuver called a full-on, handspring off during the UW-La other. by JOHN PAUL SCHALLER Sports Editor The Winona State University men's basketball team dropped two games last weekend and extended its losing streak to six games. On Friday the mistake riddled Warriors dropped an 80-71 decision to Bemidji State. The Warriors appeared to have the momentum in the final minutes of play as they came back from a 53-39 second half deficit and tied the score at 61 with 6:41 to play. The Beavers, however, outscored Winona State 15-4 over the next five minutes and the Warriors never recovered. Jason West pumped in 23 for the Warriors to lead all scorers, while Mike Sir added 13 and Bill Barker finished with 12. Winona State hit 25 of 60 from the floor and 21 of 24 from the free throw line. On Saturday the Warriors dropped their sixth game in a row to the University of Minnesota-Duluth 74-65. The loss was also the Warriors fifth in Northern Intercollegiate Conference play in a row. The Warriors, who trailed the whole game, were down 60-46 midway through the second half after Jason West and Tim Buddenhagen were both called for technical fouls. Despite the technicals, the Warriors battled back and got as close as 63-61 before the Bulldogs put the game out of reach. Barker lead the Warriors with 14 points, while West netted 13 in the losing effort. A frustrated Bill Barker and teammate lay on the floor in rough action at McGown Gym last Saturday night.
