SECRETARY’S REPORT

F RANK C AMPBELL

• Minutes: July Board Meeting • Other updates as needed

Kathy Whitford moved to approve the July Minutes. Kerry Watterson seconded. Approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT

K ATHY W HITFORD

• Review of June and July Quickbooks Reports • Bank statement for July just became available. Maryann is working on it. • Current balance: $139, 744 will essentially be around $110,000 after the checks clear on the two shells we purchased. • Paid our rack fees.

CLUB MANAGER REPORT J AZ C ARLSEN • SRL Regatta is on Saturday.

• All of the teams except one is showing up.

• Victoria secured 2 food trucks (Burning River Bagels and Barrio) for the regatta.

• We got a keg from Brick and Barrel.

• FRL - 15 teams

• Secured coxswains for the teams but still needs 2. Some teams have already procured coxswains and so, there is some confusion as to if the WRRA secured coxswains will be coxing for these teams.

• Will not be here for September 4-8. Will be back September 11th.

OLD/NEW BUSINESS: CRF UPDATE

• CRF/WRRA directors joint task force meeting update ◦ We've had 3 meetings. They are going to utilize Values Dream mapping. What are the things that WRRA does vs. CRF? Where is the overlap? Etc. Looking at things that need to be addressed. ◦ The next meeting is August 19. ◦ Kerry is looking at WRRA's finances and summarize them. There is a lack of understanding of what WRRA does and spends our money on. Until we understand the current financial picture, we need to figure out our needs, etc. ◦ Suggestion: CRF and WRRA directors of particular areas should meet either monthly or quarterly. Example, finance and development can discuss different grants that either organization ought to seek out. • CRF Board meeting (3rd Tuesday of month – 7am) – August 21st – WRRA rep to attend: Janet Clark will attend.

COACHING AND COXSWAIN REPORT

J AMYE J AMISON

• Coaches and coxswains assigned to FRL teams. About 20 less seats available than last year. Lost a lot of people to collegiate/scholastic programs as usual. • Discussion that there are those who could be coaches, what would entice them to become coaches? • Fall Rec is being offered this year due to a coach wanting to take it on and perceived interest in the program. Fall Performance is not due to lack of coaching – those rowers are going to try buddy boats for the fall. It has been noted that there are fewer higher level coaches able to take multiple boats in the fall season. • Working to update and prepare SRL and Intermediate surveys for distribution by the end of August. • Coxing 101 clinic held Aug 10 with 12 participants. Coxing clinics will resume in April. • Transferring information for coaching/coxing packets to Club Manager for future updating and distribution. Working on annual timeline for coaching and coxing activities for future directors/Club Manager. • Attending joint CRF/WRRA meetings with WRRA Sweeps, Treasurer and Membership Directors along with a selection of CRF directors to help the two organizations become better aligned and open up lines of communication. • Discussion of survey questions.

EQUIPMENT/MERCHANDISE REPORT

VICTORIA A NDERS Equipment:

• We purchased the (2) 2015 ULII Vespoli Advantage Eights, like-new - at the final price of $29k for the pair. Asking was $32k for the pair. • Both shells will be used in General Sweeps and as swing boats for SRL • Both shells are insured.

• I'm in the process of updating our Asset Depreciation Schedule for 2018 and Leonard Insurance equipment schedule for 2019

• The Ace is back in the shop after sustaining similar damage as before. I'll present a motion at the meeting for additional funds to cover the second repair. Same cost as before.

Victoria Anders moved to approve the expenditure of up to $1,400 to repair the Ace. Jamye Jamison seconded. Approved.

Merchandise:

• We are ready for the SRL Championship regatta! COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT M EG P ATTON • Corporate Rowing: ◦ We have had 4 corporate rows this year. Still trying to push for another more, perhaps through October 15. ◦ All 4 were very successful. Feedback has been extremely positive. Some are planning on coming back next year.

ROWING PROGRAMS (, SWEEPS AND SRL) K ERRY W ATTERSON Sweeps: • There has been a request that the lowest score for the regattas/race days be dropped. It has been approved. • Kudos to Jaz, Frank and Jamye as we worked through the issues of Fall registration, etc.

Sculling: • Intro to Sculling sessions went well. Some have already signed up for Learn to Scull.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS (ADAPTIVE, , VETERANS) S COTT L ABUDA Veterans • (1) Veteran rower will be highlighted in the Power 10 column in next newsletter • Wounded Warrior row went well. • August 26th – Veterans Learn to Row

Adaptive • 2 VIPER rowers are in the process of getting classified as LTA-VI (Legs, trunk, arms visually impaired) rowers. Necessary for US Rowing sanctioned regattas • August 12 - Bonnie Meyer and Scott Labuda met with Jenn Grieb, Exec Dir of TRRA in Pittsburgh, and toured their facility and Adaptive program Planned regattas: • August 18, SRL Regatta • September 15, Head of the Cuyahoga • October 6/7, • October 20-21, Head of the Charles (submission has been entered)

• Applying for Northern Ohio Golf Charities & Foundation - VIPER rower helping

Pararowing / Veteran Pararowing • VA Blind Rehab Program continues to join our VIPER crew every other Sunday. • Scott is scheduled to meet with the VA Amputee Program admin and participants on Sept 10, 2:00-3:00 pm at the VA. If approved as a program for their patients, amputee rowers will be allowed to travel with the VA Blind Rehab Program rowers to practice on Sunday mornings. This process, seemingly redundant since their Blind Rehab Program already rows at WRRA, is necessary per internal VA procedures. Discussion items: • The VIPERs who are rowing in fall regattas would like to continue practicing on Sundays and potentially several weekday evening erg and/or on-water sessions as weather, equipment and coach availability permits. • On-water options for VPA programs

VOLUNTEERISM, VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

J ANET C LARK • Needs coxswains for the upcoming Learn to Rows. • HOTC - Last year there were 400 volunteers. Won't need that many. • There will be a Coxing 201, potentially in September. • Boat tuck in is also coming up. • HOTC Cleanup potentially to be scheduled.

MEMBERSHIP/ADMINISTRATION

F RANK C AMPBELL

• Fall Activities that are open for registration ◦ Fall General Sculling ◦ Fall General Sweeps – 8 registrants ◦ Fall Masters Competitive ◦ Fall Recreational Rowing -- 13 registrants ◦ Fall Rowing League -- 145 Registrants ◦ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening are essentially full. ◦ Tuesday Noon: 4 ◦ Wednesday Noon: 8 registrants ◦ Thursday morning: 7 registrants

• Fall Rowing League registration ◦ SRL, REC and Performance rowers were notified on August 5th (Sunday) that registration for FRL would open at 5PM on Saturday August 11th. During the ensuing 5 days, the status of Fall REC / Performance was in flux ultimately resulting in Fall Rec being offered. ◦ This was communicated to the same list as above on Friday night to clarify their options, specifically as might impact their decision to register for FRL or not. ◦ Fall Rec was opened to Summer Rec, Summer Perf and anyone who has completed a full summer and fall session. ◦ Registration opened at 5PM on Saturday. Registration was brisk with 108 in the first 10 minutes and 137 at 30 minutes. Registration plateaued with 1-2 seats / night still available and several seats available in the noon/ morning sessions. ◦ Generally the process went smoothly (only one email requesting assistance). There was an issue at the very beginning where apparently 3- 4 people were told the session they wanted was full and so they registered on the waitlist. IN reality those spaces proved to be available. I believe it is likely that those seats were in someones cart and later released, but I can’t know for sure. I did contact those people later that evening and encourage them to register. I know that 2-3 of them did. ◦ Last year we had 180 seats we made available. This year we made available 160. I don’t know if there is a less stressful (for the participants) way to approach the registration for day / time slots of FRL or SRL where it is likely that demand exceeds supply. It is worth exploring. • Also open ◦ Newly added: Learn to Scull with discount for those who took Intro to Sculling ◦ Learn to Row, August 25, Early and Late; Early is Full; Late has 10 registrants ◦ Veterans Learn to Row, August 26, Early. – 1 registrant
