2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE GUIDE 3 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY

HEAD COACH BARBARA WALTMAN VIDEO Barbara Waltman is one of the most successful coaches in intercollegiate women’s lacrosse and has established a championship-caliber program at Millersville University.

Waltman is in her 32nd season as the Marauders’ head coach in 2010 and has a career record of 210- 197-3 (.516). She enters the season as the winningest coach in Division II history.

In 2008, she notched her 200th victory when MU defeated Slippery Rock 18-4 on April 6.

Waltman has guided the Marauders to 14 playoff appearances, including the 1982 run that led to the AIAW Division III National Championship, which remains the university’s only national title for women’s athletics.

She is a three-time winner of the Brine/TWLCA Division II Coach of the Year Award and has twice been named PSAC Coach of the Year (1989 and 1991).

In 1992, MU made its first appearance in the ECAC Division II championship match, and in 1997 the Marauders captured their first ECAC-II title, 15-12, over Gannon.

Waltman’s Marauders won three consecutive PSAC Championships from 1988 to 1990 and made the The Waltman File playoffs in eight consecutive seasons from 1986 to 1993. 2010 SEASON OUTLOOK VIDEO

The Millersville women’s lacrosse program has plenty of reason for opti- mism heading into the 2010 season, searching to bounce back from last year’s 6-10, 2-8 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division record.

Heading into her 32nd year as head coach, Barb Waltman has her squad focusing on the basics. “We have the potential; we have the capability; now we need to put it all into place,” said Waltman.

“We need to keep our poise,” said Waltman. She and assistant coach Joann Caminiti look to capitalize on the team’s strengths and make some crucial improvements. In the offseason the team concentrated on differ- ent conditioning styles, as well as ball control and direction.

Returning eight starters and welcoming seven newcomers, the program is not focusing on wins and losses. “It’s a matter of playing the game the way it should be played, and executing to the best of your ability,” Waltman explained.

The keys to this year’s success include increase focus and discipline on the field. With the size of the squad, players need to be versatile and able to in all positions.

In terms of conference play, Waltman believes any team can beat another. One squad will not completely dominate the conference. “The winner is ATTACK going to be the team that plays with the least amount of errors,” Walt- Schmoltze, the squad’s leading scorer prior to a season-ending injury at the man said. beginning of 2009, will return to field for the Marauders. “It will be good to have Kelsey back in action,” said Waltman. “She’s a finesse player.” This year’s captains, senior Lindsay Toriello and junior Kelsey Schmoltze are looking to lead the team toward the direction of success in 2010. In addition, senior Liz Weekley is returning after recording a team-high 44 goals and 23 assists last season.

Weekly, a two-time All-PSAC East selection, is currently ranked fifth on the all-time scoring list at Millersville and could certainly become the career scoring leader. She is just 23 goals and 39 points shy of topping the list, and has averaged 47 goals and 59 points per season

Senior Katie DiRico, whose placement brings open looks in front of the cage, returns after scoring 30 goals last season: her first as a Marauder. Waltman looks for Morgan Mangiaruga to have “a break out year,” working on ball placement and control.

Newcomer Ashley Mogle looks to provide the squad with quick stick abili- ties. Said Waltman on this season’s attack, “On any given day, if somebody’s hot, we can really excel. We will take advantage of that.”

2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE GUIDE 7 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY 2010 SEASON OUTLOOK MIDFIELD An experienced duo of Weekley, who plays attack and midfield, and Mary Hout- mann leads the midfield this year. “Our players really complement each other in the midfield,” said Waltman. “There’s a good supporting cast.”

Weekley provides the consistency in strength and aggressiveness, and Hout- mann uses her defensive mindedness and speed to assist in the midfield.

Breaking into the lineup are freshmen Ashley Henderson and Brianna Huynh. Henderson brings her skill, intensity, and speed to the lineup, and pairs with Huynh’s ability to play both offense and defense.

“[Brianna] is aggressive, but she’s smart in her aggressiveness,” said Waltman. “She plays the angles well.” DEFENSE The Marauder defense is solid with veterans Lindsay Keeley and Lindsay Toriello returning. The two seniors combined for 34 caused turnovers last season and should provide leadership to the young squad.

Keeley, an All-PSAC East Second Team defense selection, totaled 24 ground balls last season.

“Toriello is vocal and gets the defense to move,” said Waltman. She’s a great team leader because she gets people into position where they need to be.” squad. Both bring confidence to the backfield and know when to take risks. The return of high defenders Katie Moatz and Brittney Long also benefits the “They both have that attack mentality,” Waltman explained. “They’re not afraid to take risks when they know they can.” GOALKEEPERS Starting goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty returns to the lineup this year after recording 149 saves and a .507 save percentage as a sophomore. Haggerty’s strengths include her quickness and ability to make strong clears. She also brings confidence to the team and is a strong leader.

“Courtney is one of the top goalkeepers in the conference,” said Waltman.

Madison Allen is returning in goal, as well. She pushes and challenges Haggerty in practice and is capable of rising to the occasion.

The ticket to a thriving season for the Marauders is staying focused and believing in one another. “When we stay on task, we do well,” said Walt- man. “The key for our success is to execute the basics, maintain our focus, and be really disciplined when we’re on the field. If we do those things, we will have a very successful season.”

The squad opens up the 2010 season with five road games, beginning in Shepherdstown, W. Va. on March 4 at 4 p.m. The Marauders host their home-opener with a conference match-up against East Stroudsburg on March 25 at 4 p.m.

20 2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE GUIDE MARAUDERS CHRYST FIELD AT BIEMESDERFER STADIUM

Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium serves as the home field to several Millersville athletic teams: football, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and track and field. The stadium was completed as part of a major renovation in 2005. A modern synthetic turf surface (FieldTurf) and a new polyurethane eight-lane track and infield jump/vault areas were installed.

Biemesderfer Stadium was originally constructed in 1958 with a capacity of 6,700. It was named in honor of Dr. Daniel Luke Biemesderfer, who served as Millersville’s ninth president from 1943 to 1965. Chryst Field was named after J. Freeland Chryst ‘50 following a gift that was made on behalf of his daughter, Dana Chryst ‘81 and the Jay Group.

Prior to the addition of Chryst Field in 2005, Biemesderfer Stadium had a natural grass surface. When it was built in 1958, the permanent stands (4,300 seating capacity) were erected and the stadium was used for the first time in the fall of 1970. In 1988, a special 176-seat reserved section was installed in front of the press box. An additional 2,200 spectators were able to be accomodated in temporary stands on the opposite side and the grassy hillside provides additional seating for overflow crowds.

Located in the stadium complex beneath the permanent stands are the Marauder and visiting team football locker rooms, and fully-equipped training and equipment facili- ties. Two concession stands and handicapped-accessible rest rooms are also there. A special lift for physically-chal- lenged patrons has been installed.

2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE GUIDE 33 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRADITION

Millersville University was founded in 1855—then known as Lancaster Normal School. In 1889, Millersville started playing intercollegiate athletics, beginning a tradition of excellence and pride that is entering its 121st year. Since the first team took the field, the athletics department has grown into 22 teams competing at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Few universities can match the longstanding success that Millersville’s athletics programs have enjoyed. Since joining the PSAC, the Marauders have compiled 42 team PSAC Championships in 13 different sports. The fan base and student-support of the Marauders is unrivaled among its peers. Packed venues are common, especially in Pucillo Gymnasium during basketball season, when the “Pucillo Posse”—a rowdy cheering section—helps the teams to victory. The students support all sports at Millersville. In 2008, the men’s soccer program ranked 12th in the nation in home attendance. The spirit was no more evident than in late November when nearly 1,000 fans attended the team’s NCAA Tournament contest despite the freezing temperatures. Another key part of the tradition is Millersville’s mascots, the Marauder, and Skully. The Marauder’s origin dates back to the 1930s. He received a partner at Homecoming in 2004 in Skully. Skully has become a favorite among patrons with his eye patch, an earring, size 13 boots and enthusiasm for Millersville sports.
